ABSTRACT

This plant is designed to produce 13,000 metric tonnes per year of 40 % by-weight of Ferric
Chloride solution at Industrial Area Tanjung Langsat, Johor. The plant has been constructed
by considering and focusing on all aspects that are needed in designing a Ferric Chloride
plant. The first chapter focuses on method, reaction and process description of Ferric
Chloride production and its selection of process. The iron stripping reaction of iron metal
method has been choose for the production of Ferric Chloride with iron powder, hydrochloric
acid and chlorine as the main raw materials. The analysis of the market for Ferric Chloride
and its raw materials are fully describe in chapter 2. The economic evaluation of the product
and the construction of the plant are calculated. The total capital investment (TCI) for the
plant construction are RM 19,615,675.38 and the net present value (NPV) for the plant
operation are RM 24,392,098. The payback period for the plant are on the 5 th year of the
plant operation. There are three choices of site location with different characteristics that are
required to be evaluated and are selected using scoring method. Tanjung Langsat, Pasir
Gudang is finally selected because of the availability of raw material hydrochloric acid in that
area. Besides, it provides good facilities and infrastructures such as centralized utility
facilities, which include the power supply, industrial, water and steam. The mass and energy
balance for this plant has been covered in chapter 5 and 6 with the simulation of HYSYS.
Based on the calculation, the plant is finally successfully with the production of 13 000
metric tonnes per year.
