"Preparation for Passover"
John 8:39-40--"'Abraham is our father,' they an-
swered.
'If you were Abraham's children,' said Jesus,
'then you would do the things Abraham did. As it is,
you are determined to kill Me, a man who has told you
the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do
such things.'"
Those who profess to favor freedom and
yet depreciate agitation are people who want crops
without ploughing the ground; they want rain with-
out thunder and lightning; they want the ocean
without the roar of its many waters. The struggle may
be a moral one, or it may be a physical one, or it may
be both. But it must be a struggle. Power concedes
nothing without a demand. It never did and it never
will.--Frederick Douglass
Many people, especially ignorant people,
want to punish you for speaking the truth, for being
correct, for being you. Never apologize for being cor-
rect, or for being years ahead of your time. If youre
right and you know it, speak your mind. Speak your
mind. Even if you are a minority of one, the truth is still
the truth.-- Gandhi

larly oppose it.
Thousands of years ago the Passover feast
was prepared in remembrance of struggle. This
struggle, i.e. bondage, plagues, perilous journeys,
life-death-life anew; claiming, destroying, reclaiming,
forgetting, bondage...nothing changes, including our
opposition to truth. We fight against truth because it
means changing. It means allowing ourselves to be
vulnerable, to release control (which we don't have
anyway), and to trust in something we cannot seem to
see.
Jesus knows our ways and loves us despite
them. Jesus came to show us God's way, which is
Truth, and is very different from our way. Yet we still
try and get around Truth--loving God, ourselves, and
one another, by trying to make everything easier--
often to the detriment of humanity. "How?" you ask.
Think about life today and see what comes up for you.

So, once again, we consider our preparation,
in Christian terms, for Holy Week. There is
anticipation and preparation through devotionals
perhaps, service, Worship preparations, a Maundy
Thursday remembrance through intentional
communion with family, thinking about The Last
Supper. There is perhaps a pause before eating
bread and drinking cup, remembering the great and
most-loving sacrifice of GodSelf for each one of us,
again, despite our continual struggle against grace.
We may seek out a Good Friday service--this year in
Mayview at Zion AME--6pm, where we hopefully will
allow ourselves to feel heartache--and joy--in our
struggle with Grace and Truth.
And of course the Great Celebration of the
Resurrection on Easter Sunday--Jesus is alive
again, having destroyed the death that plagues us,
and we have new life through him--Hallelujah!!! But
what does that mean for me? How have I been
changed; how am I changing, releasing, allowing
myself to be vulnerable to God's grace? It's such a
struggle!

Zion AME in Mayview on April 14, at 6pm.
Pastor Kristin will provide the message.
Zion will hold an Easter Sunrise service hosted
by the Youth, starting at 7 AM, on Sunday April
16th, followed by breakfast
cooked by "The Men" of the
church.
Easter worship will begin at
10:30 AM and include our
Easter cantata "Christ Is Risen",
compiled by Johnathan
Crumpton.

and prayer, those experiencing health difficulties
& or recovering from surgery, the loss of family
and friends, & those adjusting to new seasons in

McGinnis, Louis White, Marty Begemann,

The council is in the process of buying a
new camera to upload Sunday sermons to You-
Tube. The Board of Trustees is in the process of
getting bids for the roof on the education wing. A
congregational meeting will be called once all bids
are received. The new church website was an-
nounced at the annual meeting. The Council ac-
cepted the mowing bid of Warren Hawthorne.

BOARD of CHRISTIAN EDUCATION
The summer Worship Schedule will begin
June 4th and continue until the middle of August.
Sunday School will start at 9 AM, followed by Wor-
ship at 10 AM. Our first Sunday on June 4th will
include a kickball game for all to enjoy. On June
11, Robin McGinnity-Connely, Executive Director
of CASA, will speak.
There will be a sign up sheet for those
wishing to teach Vacation Bible School. Volun-
teers will have the opportunity to choose what they
plan to teach and what method(s) they choose to
deliver their message.

YOUTH YAK
The Community Easter Egg Hunt will
be at the Mayview Park at
3pm on Saturday, April 15.This event
is open to all youth ages 12 and un-
der. Youth will enjoy snacks and
crafts in addition to the egg hunt. Please plan for all
youth to meet on April 9, following regular worship
to assist filling the eggs for the hunt.
Following the community egg hunt, the Youth will
hold practice for the Easter Sunrise Service.
SAIL
April 8th, from 9 AM12 PM, we will hold a city-
wide clean up for the city streets and the park in
Mayview. Lunch will be served in the park with a hot
dog roast. Please bring bags and wear gloves.
May 27 members will hold a confirmation banquet.
June 11th following worship a wedding shower will
be held in honor of Amy Nolte and Don Kennedy
June 15 will be a trip to Powell Gardens and eating
lunch together.

CONFERENCE CLAMOR
CONFERENCE ANNUAL GATHERING
2017 Conference Annual Gathering (CAG)! We will
once again meet in Columbia, MO on June 8-10 at
the Holiday Inn.
STEPPINGSTONE AUX SHOWER
The Shower was a great success! Help from the
Lafayette Cluster churches is so appreci-
ated. Currently there are 34 youth in the Stepping-
stone program. Good things happening at Stepping-
stone!
The Thank You Luncheon will be held on June 12.
CHANGES to eCOURIER SCHEDULE
As you have been made aware, the Conference
staff position of Administrative Assistant has been
eliminated due to the budget. Therefore, to try and
balance the workload, the eCourier will now be
shared twice a month instead of weekly. Please see
the below schedule for the remainder of March and
all of April:

The eHappenings will be shared on March 31 and
then on April 14 and April 28.

NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER
The National Day of Prayer is Thurs-
day, May 4, 2017. This is the 66th Annual
NDP and the thirteenth year that we will cele-
brate this event in Odessa! This year's obser-
vance will again be a prayer breakfast. It will
be from 6:45-7:30am with breakfast immedi-
ately following. The location is The Crown,
7411 Outer Road, Odessa. We will be praying
for our national, regional and local leaders. It
will be a multi-media event with music and
video supporting our petitions.

LAF AREA WOMENS FELLOWSHIP
The Lafayette Area Women's Fellowship will
hold their spring meeting on Thursday, April 27,
2017, at Trinity United Church of Christ in Lex-
ington. Registration will begin at 9:00am and
the meeting at 9:30am. The program will be
presented by Trinity on their C.A.R. ministry for
cancer patients and the offering will go to
C.A.R. The Rev. Andy Mockridge will install
the new officers for the year. Highlights of the
Conference will be presented by the Rev. Dale
Parson. The noon meal will be a salad lunch-
eon; please bring a dish to share. PLEASE
COME AND BRING YOUR FRIENDS. Both
men and women are encouraged to come and
learn and enjoy the fellowship of our sister
churches.

Easter Grief
Some years ago I was invited to preach
at a Good Friday service. The text was from
Johns Gospel and I focused on death. Somewhat
annoyed, one member of the congregation took
me to task after the service and asked, Why did-
nt you preach about resurrection?
In response, I pointed out that there were
two reasons. One is purely prudential. If you
steal the rectors Easter thunder on Good Friday,
he will never ask you to preach again, but the
other reason, I pointed out, is spiritual and theo-
logical. We are meant to sit with death on this
day. Thats the spiritual discipline of Good Friday,
and Easter is not a sequel to the loss of this day.
Its a reversal of deaths hold on us.
That said, I understood the mans frustra-
tion. We dont like death very much. For that mat-
ter (truth be told), I dont like death very much.
And we bend every effort to do an end run around
its emotional toll. Some Christians will argue that
if you are genuinely spiritual, you will be unmoved
by iteven happy in the face of death. And some
of the more therapeutically oriented will argue
that acclimating to its burden is part of a
process that ends somehow with closure.
The latter is emotional nonsense. The former is
spiritual nonsense.
Of the therapeutic end-run around death
the questions have to be asked, What does it
mean to get over, process, or find closure about
losing someone dear to you? How do you tran-
scend the loss of a mother or father who nurtured
you and deeply shaped the world you inhabit?
What does it mean to get over losing someone
with whom you lived intimatelyphysically, emo-
tionally, and spiritually?
To be sure, it is necessary to relearn the
world, as one writer puts it, but such losses are
folded into life, they are not shed like old clothes.
I suspect that the only people who process, get
over, and find closure around such losses are
typically people who are emotionally damaged
and narcissisticpeople who (sadly) lack the ca-
pacity to connect deeply with other people in the
first place. Like the man who on learning his wife
had died complained at her funeral, Who is going
to take care of me now?
The spiritual end run is equally problem-
atic. The hope of resurrection does not erase the
reality of death or the toll it takes. Good Friday
will come again next year. Some who have lost
those they

love this year will lose still others in the year to
come. Some of those whom have been spared this
year will not be so fortunate in the year to come.
Is the measure of how deeply we believe the Easter
message the extent to which we are unmoved by
death? No. Paul doesnt say, Thanks to the resur-
rection, we dont grieve. He says, Thanks to the
resurrection we dont grieve as others do.
So, maybe this year its time to remember the
promise of Easter grief
1. an approach to grieving that is honest about the
toll that death takes
2. the kind of grieving that acknowledges that death
happens, but isnt final
3. the kind of grieving that is clear-eyed about the
way in which death robs us of a loved ones com-
panionship, but also affirms that death can never
rob us of their love or them of ours
Perhaps this year it is time to say, as Henri
Nouwen did when his mother died, that if anyone
should protest against death it is the religious per-
son, the person who has increasingly come to know
God as the God of the living.
Contrary to the nonsense we are some-
times taught, Easter grief need not be a place of
emotional surrender and existential catastrophe. It
can be the most honest, whole, and faithful place
we can possibly standand find hope.
