Set A
Subject: Fundamentals of Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer

1. Define thermodynamic system, thermodynamic property, thermodynamic equilibrium. [6]

2. Argon (1 kg) contained in a piston cylinder device shown in Figure below is initially at a
pressure of 500 kPa and a temperature of 700C. Heat is added until the final temperature
is 6000C and a pressure of 1 MPa is required to lift the piston form the stops. Sketch the
process on P-V and T-V diagrams and determine the total work transfer. [Take R = 208
J/kg K]. [10]

3. Define pure substance. Explain with examples. [6]

0
P1=1000 kPa
4. Steam enters into a nozzle at , T 1 =300 C and with a velocity of

0
75 m/s . Steam leaves the diffuser at P2=80 kPa T 2 =200 C
, and with a

velocity of 350 m/s . Determine the heat loss per unit mass of the steam from the

nozzle surface. [8]

Set B
Subject: Fundamentals of Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer

1. Define thermodynamic equilibrium, thermodynamic state and thermodynamic process.

[6]
2. A piston cylinder arrangement with two set of stops is restrained by a linear spring (
k =12 kN /m ) as shown in Figure below. The initial pressure of the gas is 500 kPa and

the pressure required to lift the piston is 1000 kPa. Heat is supplied to the gas until its
pressure reaches 6000 kPa. Sketch the process on P-V diagram and determine the total
work transfer. [10]

3. What is saturation pressure and saturated vapor? Derive an expression for specific
volume of a two phase mixture in terms of quality. [6]
4. A rigid vessel of volume 0.2 L contains water at its critical state. It is cooled down to
room temperature of 250 C. Determine the heat loss from the water.[8]
