FACULTY OF ENGINEERING & APPLIED SCIENCES

Department of Electrical Engineering

Riphah International University, Sector I-14, Hajj Complex, Islamabad, Pakistan

Course Title: BM-343 Bio Electromagnetism

Prerequisite: GS-121 Applied Physics
Faculty: Engr. Jhanzeb
Designation: Lecturer
Email: jhanzeb@riphah.edu.pk

Course Objective:
The subject Bio-electromagnetism is the most fundamental subject in the curriculum of
biomedical engineering education. Bio-electromagnetism defines capacitors, inductors and
resistors in terms of its primary electric and magnetic quantities like electric charge, electric
potential, electric current, electric and magnetic flux. Bio-electromagnetism explains universal
concepts in three-dimension real world, i.e., electro-magnetic wave propagation in free-space.

After this course, students will be able to:

CLO 1:
Describe laws and principles of electromagnetic fields. (C2)

CLO 2:
Compute mathematical problems related to electromagnetic fields. (C3)

BM-343 BIO ELECTROMAGNETISM (2+0):

Vector Analysis, Dot and Cross products, divergence, curl and gradients, Electric Field Intensity, Flux
Density, Energy and Potential, Energy Stored in Electric Fields, Electric Fields in Material Media, Gausss
Law, Gradient, Divergence and Curl, Stokes theorem, Boundary Conditions, Poissons and Laplace
Equations, Point Form of Ohms Law, Permittivity, Calculation of Resistance and Capacitance, Steady
Currents & Magnetic field, Magnetization and Permeability, Inductance and mutual inductance,
Magnetic Flux Density, Line Charge Density, Surface Charge Density, Volume Charge Density, Biot-
Savart Law, Lorentzs Force Law, Magnetic Field in Material Media.

Recommended Books:

1. Engineering Electromagnetics 8th Edition , William Hayt & John Buck

2. Field and wave electromagnetics 2nd Edition , David K Cheng
