Q (2) An offset link subjected to a force of 25kN as shown in fig.1 It is made of FG200 and
factor of safety is 3. Determine thickness of offset link.

Q (3) The shaft of an overhang crank subjected to a force of 1kN is shown in fig.2. The shaft is made of
plain carbon steel 45C8 and tensile yield strength is 380 N/mm2. The factor of safety is 2. Determine the
diameter of the shaft using the maximum shear stress theory.

Q (4) A 40 mm diameter shaft is made of forged steel 30C8. There is a step in shaft and
theoretical stress concentration factor at step is 2.1. The notch sensitivity factor is 0.84.
Determine the endurance strength of the shaft if it is subjected to a reversed bending moment.

Q (5) A solid circular shaft made of steel Fe 620 (Sut = 620 N/mm2 and Syt = 380N/mm2) is
subjected to an alternating torsional moment which varies from -200Nm to 400Nm. The shaft is
ground and expected reliability is 90%. Neglecting stress concentration, calculate the shaft
diameter for infinite life. The factor of safety is 2. Use the distortion energy theory of failure.

Q (6) Explain the various types of keys with simple and neat sketches. Write down the design procedure
of keys and splines.

Q (7) Design a cast iron protective flange coupling to connect two shafts in order to transmit 7.5
kW at 720 r.p.m. The following permissible stresses may be used: Permissible shear stress for
shaft, bolt and key material = 33 Mpa Permissible crushing stress for bolt key material = 60 Mpa,
Permissible shear stress for the cast iron = 15 Mpa.

Q (8) A railway wagon moving at a velocity of 2m/s is brought to rest by a bumper consisting of
two helical compression spring arranged in parallel. The springs are compressed by 150mm in
bringing the wagon to rest. The springs are made of oil-hardened and tempered steel wire with
ultimate tensile stress of 1500N/mm 2 and modulus of rigidity of 81370 N/mm2. The permissible
shear stress for the spring can be taken as 50% of the ultimate tensile strength. Design the spring
and calculate:
(i) Maximum force on each spring;
(ii) Wire diameter;
(iii) Mean coil diameter; and
(iv) Number of active coils.

Q (9) A machine vice as shown in Fig.3 has single start, square thread with 22mm diameter of
5mm pitch. The outer and inner diameter of friction color is 55mm and 45mm respectively. The
coefficients of friction for thread and collar are 0.15 and 0.17 respectively. The machinist can
comfortably exert a force of 125N on the handle at mean radius of 150mm. assuming uniform
wear for collar; calculate (i) the clamping force developed between the jaw; and (ii) the overall
efficiency of the clamp.

Note: Attempt any two questions from this section. (In approx. 400 words) (152=30)

Q (10) A bracket is riveted to a column by 6 rivets of equal size as shown in Fig.4. It carries a
load of 60 kN at a distance of 200 mm from the centre of the column. If the maximum shear
stress in the rivet is limited to 150 MPa, determine the diameter of the rivet.

Q (11) The shaft, as shown in Fig. 5, is driven by pulley B from an electric motor. Another belt drive
from pulley A is running a compressor. The belt tensions for pulley A are 1500 N and 600 N. The ratio of
belt tensions for pulley B is 3.5. The diameter of pulley A is 150mm and diameter of pulley B is 480mm.
The allowable tensile stress for the shaft material is 170 MPa and the allowable shear stress is 85 MPa.
Taking torsion and bending factor as 1.25 and 1.75 respectively, Find shaft diameter.

Q (12) Design the longitudinal joints for a boiler whose diameter in 2 m and is subjected to a
pressure of 1 MPa. The longitudinal joint is a triple riveted butt joint with an efficiency of about
85% and the circumferential joint is a double riveted lap joint with an efficiency of about 70%.
The pitch in the outer rows of the rivets is to be double that in the inner rows and the width of the
cover plates is unequal. The allowable shear stress = 70MPa, tearing shear stress = 50MPa
crushing stress = 120MPa. Assume that the resistance of the rivets in double shear is 1.875 times
that of single shear.
