The following is a review of Northeastern University Professor William A. Lovely, III.

The exigency for this review is the closing of the semester and the approach of the new year. I

hope to provide a helpful and informative review of the man and the teacher for the students who

may have him in the future. Theyll need as much information they can get their hands on to

make their first year easier. This review could be on a blog page that gives in-depth reviews for

other students to read. Thus, readers of this review will be college students, particularly those in

the DAmore-McKim School of Business at Northeastern University. A typical business student

has ambitions to become a manager or otherwise major player at a company or bank. They have

high aspirations and want the best education to set them on a path to success and excellent

financial returns for their investment in university. Business majors will be required to take one

of the two courses professor Lovely teaches, so they will want quality information on potential

professors before registering for a course. The courses are intro level, and can be taken by first-

years such as myself, and it is likely that readers will have little to no knowledge about Professor

Lovely or his teaching methods, or the class they are signing up for. Through this review, my

fellow students will gain an insight on this professor and can make use of this information when

deciding their schedules. A thorough review should assuage any fears a student may have of

selecting a teacher they will come to dislike, or any uncertainty about whether they should take

Professor Lovelys class. While my readers may come from all cultural, political, and moral

backgrounds, some will certainly be at odds with the professor and the course itself. Thus,

readers should take care to compare their own personality and beliefs with what is presented

here. Those with collectivist backgrounds may find it difficult to learn from the capitalist Lovely.
CAPTAIN LOVELY:
A REVIEW
Due to everyones individual and specific learning styles, it can be hard to

evaluate a professor in a way that anyone can appreciate. Thus, it is essential that you

consider your own strengths and weaknesses as you ponder signing up for a Professor

Lovely class. Im hoping to provide the most objective and informative review I can for

you to help make registration simpler. While you may hear many things about Professor

Lovely, most people either hate him or love him. After reading this, youll be able to

make the decision yourself without the influence of rumor.

On the right is professor William A. Lovely, III. He has a BA

in Philosophy, which might shock you and have you wondering,

why does he teach international business? Well, heres why: hes

also received an MBA and a Doctor of Law and Policy from

Northeastern University, and a Master in Public Administration from Harvard

University (Northeastern University). Hes not exactly your stereotypical living-in-a-

van-hippie philosophy major after all!

Professor Lovely has an impressive education record, and on paper seems

immediately qualified to teach the class entitled International Business and Social
Responsibility, so at least thats a given. On top of his education, Lovely has also had

extensive experience in the financial sector, as he will undoubtedly proclaim in at least

one lecture, he is a finance guy. Before teaching at university, Lovelys private sector

engagements included working in the commercial lending industry for six years. So, if

you want someone whos had experience raking in the cash, this guys got that as well.

And if his education and banking experience still isnt enough for you, Professor

Lovely also spent extensive time in the public sector. He began as a member of the

Marine Corps, rising to the rank of Captain during his tenure. Lovely later worked with

the United Nations, NATO, foreign militaries, and the State Department (Northeastern

University). As you will come to know, Captain Lovely spent a great deal of time in

various nations throughout the world, and was at one point tasked with managing

reconstruction in the Al Anbar province of Iraq (Northeastern University). Now, that

adds the international to the business, making him pretty well rounded.

This is a rather impressive resume, with a total of twenty-three years of

experience in the private and public sector, its undeniable that Lovely has spent time in

the real world developing applicable knowledge and technical know-how. This

convinced me that he was well-qualified to teach this course, and effectively increase my

chances of being successful in the business world. If youre still unsure about his

qualifications, Im not sure what more you could ask for.

Youve got his background, but now youll want to know: what type of man is he

really, and, more importantly, is he any good at being a professor? Professor Lovely is

dedicated and knowledgeable with an intimidating presence, yet kind from the bottom

of his heart and caring for his students and their education. Maybe this seems

contradictory or perhaps even impossible, but youll come to see why.

So, what happens on the first day? The moment class begins, Lovely will instantly

overwhelm you with energy. His vocal presence and active body language attracts your

attention, and your eyes will be glued to his every movement. The man carries an

immense liveliness with him through everything he does; you simply wont want to miss

it. He moves around the class, side to side, front to back; hes incredibly dynamic

compared to others. Certainly not soft-spoken, hell fill the room with sound and wont

let up until its time to go. I love professors like this, so I was instantly enticed.

You may be excited as I was, or, if you hate professors like this, intimidated. And

then, just when you think youve adjusted to his pace and energy, hell completely

change directions. The upbeat, almost giddy man youve just seen will suddenly

disappear. Hell plant himself firmly, front and center, and, after enticing you with an

attitude youve likely never seen from another college professor, Lovely will command

the class as he did his battalion in the marines, if only for a moment. Let me just warn

you now: no electronics of any kind, at all, ever. Prepare to be intimidated here;

remember, he used to be called Captain Lovely. And dont think hell let up on this, or

that youll get away with it. Lovely isnt stupid, and he is unflinching. Youve been

warned.

Dont fret though, because youll never see this flame again. Captain Lovely will

return right back to Professor Lovely before you know it. Throughout the rest of the

semester, the pace will continue, matching his dynamic personality. While you may have

been adept at keeping up in classes before, his pace is objectively quick, probably faster

than youve seen. Lovely has and uses PowerPoint presentations, although he will skip

through them consistently, landing on a slide for quite literally five seconds before he

moves on, totally eclipsing all the information before you can even read it, let alone
write it down. The only refuges to this neck-breaking speed are the posted presentations

and keeping up with the assigned readings. Lovelys speed is not arbitrarily fast though,

so coming prepared will aid in keeping up with him and your class participation.

A significant portion of your grade will be participation. For those students who

dislike speaking in class and answering questions, you will be challenged here. As its a

part of your grade, participation is virtually mandatory, but can theoretically be made up

for in other areas. Lovely asks questions that require you to extrapolate on what you

know, which can sometimes be knowledge from the text or other courses, or critical

thinking and your own experience. Unlike in an economics or accounting class, the

answers to these questions arent well defined. Youll have to develop an understanding

of business ethics and a knack for seeing the extended consequences of certain

decisions. Lovely wants you to read between the lines and make interpretations; this

goes far beyond simple calculations.

Though this can be intimidating at times, Lovely makes a point to ensure your

comfort when participating, so as not to discourage you from raising your hand. He

genuinely wants his students to make their voices heard and to contribute, and he is

willing to assist in any way he can, in or out of class. Lovely isnt one to publicly scold or

embarrass students, as he was a victim of this in his past, and will generally appreciate

any relevant input.

Besides class participation, the rest of your grade is comprised of various

deliverables, three exams, two map quizzes, and a major group project. The

deliverables include short individual papers, and the map quizzes require you to

memorize nations around the globe. These are to ensure the development of global

awareness hence the title international business. The three exams are multiple
choice only and, as Lovely puts it, this is to ensure that you can select the right answer

from possible choices. As he will tell you, Lovely was never good himself at taking exams

and dreaded them throughout his education, so he relies on multiple choice exams to

make them easier for students. Choosing the right answer can often be simpler than

recalling it on your own.

The group project is a beast of its own on an entirely different level. Youre

required to select a company and a country and create a plan to enter your firm into this

market. Be prepared to work with students youve never met for an entire semester on a

major assignment worth 30% of your grade. The assignment culminates in a minimum

20 page, 6000-word paper, with multiple multi-page papers beforehand as you build up

to the finished project. Youll have to give presentations along the way, as well as at the

end. Hopefully you like research, because youll be doing an enormous amount of it.

Stay up to beat on global news and international affairs; youll need the knowledge.

Depending on your preferences and your teammates, this could be a blessing or a curse.

Either way, there will be no avoiding group work under Lovely.

This may seem daunting, though, much like class participation, Lovely will gladly

assist you in your endeavors. If you should find that you struggle in your groups or there

are major problems, well, he has an app for that. He loves to say this in class, quite

often actually, though, no one is particularly certain what this means. I assume its

simply an invitation to come see him during office hours for help if you need it, though I

dont know for sure. Aside from this, Lovely always provides extensive feedback on

assignments, and will go over the quizzes and exams. While Lovely expects a thorough,

near professional level of analysis, it is also clear that he is willing to help his students

achieve those goals and succeed.

All in all, Lovely teaches at a swift pace and places extensive responsibility on his

students and holds high expectations for them. This class is, as he says, no easy A. Not

exactly the best sell, but, hell keep you engaged and entertained. His Captain Lovely

Stories, where he recalls his time in the marines or college or working for the bank, are

always good for a laugh. He is a humorous man with a great deal of humility, and never

shies away from joking about himself. Hell wear hilariously out-of-style Burberry

button-ups just to prove a point, and do his best to make a dense text as entertaining as

possible. Lovely has wonderful experience in the world, and loves to share his stories, so

listen up!

The following are my overall ratings for Lovely:

Workload: 3/5

Engagement and Attitude: 5/5

Teaching Effectiveness: 4/5

It is important to consider that Lovelys purpose is a difficult obligation, that is, to

educate his students on the intricacies of conducting international business, and to

instruct them on the importance of social responsibility and ethical behavior. These two

goals can sometimes conflict, especially in the mind of a high-gains oriented business

student.

Because of this conflict and the complexity of the topic, it can be rather difficult

to teach. Lovely manages to push through this barrier with his immense enthusiasm,

and attempts to do his best at capturing the curriculum and textbook while imbuing in

his students a respect and understanding of foreign cultures and ethics. However, this

can sometimes lead to Lovely moving quickly through course material, and leaving out

information in some lectures that may end up on an exam. This creates increased
responsibility on the students to thoroughly study the text and presentations, and can be

a bit confusing, but he will always clarify whether he has skipped something youll need

to grab on your own, so dont fret.

Professor Lovely expects a great deal from his students. If you want a challenge,

then Lovely is right for you. If you want an engaging, fascinating professor, then take

him. If you want to learn from a man with extensive experience and education, then

study under him. If, however, you dont like to participate or are too shy to do so, avoid

Lovely. If you love to sit on your phone in class or are prone to skipping lecture or

arriving late; if you want to slide by with little effort and snatch an easy A, dont reject

him just yet. If youre committed to being lazy, pass on him, but if youre up for

something more energizing and motivating, then give him a chance. Ultimately, the

choice is up to you. Lovely happens to be a wonderful professor for those who are

dedicated and committed to working and learning, so before you write Lovely off and

claim hes a horrible professor, consider if its really you who arent right for him.
