MORE COMPARATIVE STRUCTURES

1. LESS + uncountable noun+ than (MENOS QUE) We have less


energy than our sisters do
FEWER+ countable noun+ than (MENOS QUE) We have
fewer chairs than our sisters do.

2. AS MANY+ countable noun+ AS (TANTOS/ASCOMO) There


are as many boys as girls in this class
AS MUCH+ uncountable noun+ AS ((TANTO/ACOMO) There
is as much sugar as milk in the fridge.

3. Los comparativos se pueden repetir para sugerir un cambio


continuo (cada vez ms.):This lesson seems to be getting
longer and longer.
Jim started feeling more and more tired.

4. Los comparativos se pueden enfatizar usando adverbios como


MUCH, FAR, A LOT, A LITTLE This book is much/far/a lot/a
little more expensive.

5. THAN tambin puede introducir una oracin. Food here is more


expensive than I thought (DE LO QUE pensaba).

6. El adverbio JUST se puede aadir a ASAS para enfatizar.


Living in the country is just as expensive as living in London.

7. Fjate en la estructura SUCH (a)+adjective+noun+AS


(un/un+sustantivo+tan+adjetivo+como) Ive never been to
such a good party as that one.

8. Se pueden eliminar las partes de la comparacin que repiten el


verbo principal, aunque los auxiliares (can, be, have, will) si se
pueden repetir y el verbo puede ser reemplazado por una forma
de do:
-You paid more for your house than I paid (no es necesario
repetir el verbo). Es ms correcto decir: You paid more for your
house than I did.
-Jack can swim a lot better than I can (los auxiliares si se
pueden repetir).

9. Los comparativos pueden ser usados en construcciones paralelas


con THE:

THE+ comparativo, THE+ comparativo (cuanto ms,


ms.)
The faster you drive, the more petrol you use. (Cunto ms
rpido conduzcas, ms combustible usas). The slower, the better.
(Cunto ms lento, mejor).
