Access to the working area will be via:
‘The existing construction site..
Material deliveries and unloading will be via:
‘Main construction area, construction site entrance.
Task No__| Description: For the excavation to form the sewer connections
1 | Prior to commencement, the boundary of the works will be defined and
cordoned off as required. The client will constructaa scaffold platform
walkway with hand rail, from the site compound to the working area. Any
felling of tees will be carried out by the client.
The client will provide all necessary service drawings, which will be assessed,
the area wil be cat-scanned, with all known and suspected services marked
out.
At this stage, the site supervisor will assess the riverbank and walkway to
ensure that itis safe forall operatives that will be working on the
construction of the gabion wall If he deems it unsafe, the principal
contractor may be requested to provide further walkways or hand rails.
2 | The area required to be worked will be assessed and cordoned off with
heras type fencing to secure the area, (if deemed necessary by the contracts
managei
‘Ac the end of each day the area will be secured to prevent unauthorised or
accidental access by others.
| Allplant and equipment will then be moved to a safe distance from the
working area and all safety equipment readied. (See PPE above however,
this will include all rescue equipment and a means for contacting the
emergency services). Weather reports will be checked to ensure imminent
heavy rainfalls are identified and the water levels are low.
When satisfied that the area is safe the a conveyor belt will be positioned
| from the rear garden area of plot 90, down the embankment to the working
| area. The area will then be assessed and a self inflating dam wil be inserted at
a set distance from the rivers edge to act as a further safety measure, ie. to
support the ground and reduce water ingress. This will be undertaken fixing
the dam to separate points of the embankment at either end using steel pins.
Additional measures may be required to prevent water ingress where the
dam cannot be sealed sufficiently:The working area will then be pumped
free of water and checked for any aquatic lifeAny aquatic life found will be
carefully removed and placed back into the river.
3 | Iemust be noted at this stage that the works to the wall foundation will be
lower than the river level. Pumping will therefore be required in the
excavated working areas,
THE WATER LEVELS WILL BE CONSTANTLY MONITORED
DUE TO THE CLOSE PROXIMITY TO THE RIVER AND NO
WORKS UNDERTAKEN DURING HEAVY DOWNFALLS OF
RAIN.
@__| The area will be excavated by hand at maximum depths of 1.0m deep. theexcavated material will be loaded on to the conveyorbekransponed io He ]
rear garden of plot 90 and weathered. This material is to be used backfill
behind the gabions once constructed. When the maximum reduced dig of
1Omis reached, the face of the embankment will be shored using light
weight aluminium shutters. These will be fixed into place by driving steel
pins into the front face of the shutter at a depth of 1.5m. The top of the
shutter will be held in place by driving steel pins into the top of the
embankment and strapping the top of the shutter to the pins, This procedure
will repeated until the required depth for the concrete base is reached.
Concrete will then be loaded onto the conveyor bel from the rear garden of
plot 90 using a 5 ton excavator and transported directly to the
prepared foundation Note: no persons will be permitted in the excavated
area whilst the concrete is being poured.
‘When the concrete has cured sufficiently wire mesh gabions will then be
placed into position and filled with stone as manufacturers instructions. The
firs tier of gabions will then be back filled behind and compacted using the
material that was excavated and stored in the rear garden of plot 90.All
materials used to achieve this will be transported via the conveyor belt. From
this position the dam can be removed and moved to a safe storage area
prior to removal from site.
Subsequent tiers of gabions will chen be constructed on top of the first and
backfilled as works proceed. On completion any surplus material will be
removed, the conveyor belt and walkway will be dismantled and stored in a
safe place prior to removal from site.Waste:

Ground Conditions:
Emergency procedures:
Waste will be cleared as per the clients instructions. No
spoil, debris, materials or otherwise are permitted adjacent,
to the excavated area. A designated area will be agreed
with the client for the safe storage of spoil.
‘The principal contractor is requested to provide
appropriate welfare facilites in accordance with current
statute.
‘The storage of materials will be agreed with the principal
contractor and kept a safe distance from the waters edge.
This company will endeavour to provide the principal
contractor with any information relevant to the
construction phase plan and upon request, offer all
information to cdm co-ordinators.
Itis noted that the ground conditions are a sort clay
material with seams of rock. The principal contractor
must therefore furnish this company with all known
details of the ground conditions and advise on potential
flood conditions. No works will be permitted in any
excavation without appropriate rescue equipment being
readily available and all site personnel are to be informed
to be vigilant when undertaking excavation works.
All operatives are to be issued with Leptospirosis
instruction due to the works being within the vicinity of
the river,
Prior to commencement of works, all rescue equipment
and PPE will be made readily available and issued to those
who are required to wear such.
It was noted on several previous visits that the river is
quite shallow and not too strong of a current to drag
persons away.
A supervisor/ first aider will be on hand at all times with a
mobile telephone to call the emergency services should
the need arise and to take control of the situation.RISK ASSESSMENTS
