I am Adam. I celebrate Awal Muharram today. Awal means beginning and
Muharram is the name of the first month of the Muslim Lunar colander. The date
coincides with the migration of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in the
622 AD.
As Muslims we, start the New Year with a reflection of the past year and
we make better resolutions and plans for the coming year. We recite the verses
of the Holy Quran. Awal Muharram is a quiet and spiritual celebration for
Muslims.
I am Santhiya. We celebrate our Indian New Year on the first day of the
first month of the Hindu lunar calendar. We spring-clean our house two weeks
before the festival. My sister and I decorate the entrance in front of our house
with intricate designs called kolam. We celebrate our New Year according to our
indian traditions. Everybody is happy
I am Leong Wei Khang. I celebrate Chinese New Year which falls on the
first day of the Chinese Lunar calendar. We clean the house and buy new clothes.
These activities signify a new beginning for us. It is taboo to sweep the house on
the first day of the New Year because that will sweep away our good luck. We
celebrate our New Year according to our Chinese traditions. Everybody is happy
On the eve of the New Year all our family gather for a grand reunion. I
receive money in red packets from my parents and married relatives. We put up
red-coloured decorations such as lanterns and couplets. To us red symbolises
good fortune. We watch the famous lion dance which is the symbol of strength
and prosperity. For the next few days we have open house to celebrate the New
Year with our relatives and friends of different races.
