1. CALCULATION OF HEAT LOSS

1.0 PROJECT PREPARATION

1.0.1 Creating a DXF File

TechCON Software works with .dxf files, therefore before loading the project into the program, the file should be converted
to this format, as follows:

1. Open the project file in AutoCAD (or other graphical program that you use) and in the File menu, select ... Save as. A
window appears in which you specify the location to save the file and its name, and in the lower drop-down Save as Type
box you select the file type .dxf version 14 or higher (Fig 1.0-1).

Fig. 1.0-1

2. After clicking the Save button, the file will be created in the .dxf file, which you load as a background to the program
following in the instructions of Chapter 1.3.

In case of any problem loading the project into TechCON, it is necessary first to explode the project in AutoCAD (EXPLODE
command) into lines. Then use the command PURGE to clean up the project and then export it to .dxf format.

1.0.2 Creating a Blind Drawing, Editing Background

TechCON loads dimensions, different items, and reference lines, so you do not need to delete them in AutoCAD.

After loading the background into TechCON (chapter 1.3) you may delete unnecessary things:
1. click the icon Select or press F5
2. select what you want to delete, either by clicking on the line or highlighting the area
3. Press DEL

Things you deleted with the DEL key are not deleted from the program, just hidden. If you want to go back, use the
command View all (Editing - Editing of background - View all).

1-1
TechCON Manual Chapter 1 - Calculation of Heat Loss

The menu Editing - Editing of Background (Fig. 1.0-2) contains more commands that allow us to hide texts (Hide texts), hide
all (Hide all) and view all hidden (View all).

If the file from AutoCAD is colored and we want to have it in a single color, use the command View by Color (Editing -
Editing of background - View by color...). (Fig. 1.0-2a)

Fig. 1.0-2

1.0.3 Deleting and Replacing Background

To delete the background, select the Editing and then Delete Background (Fig.1.0-3).

Fig. 1.0-3

To replace the background in the program, you must first delete the old background.

2.2.4. Division of Circuits

You may divide the circuits in 2 ways:

1. simple circuit division - vertically or horizontally (detailed description in Chapter 4.9)
2. detailed circuit division - division in the desired direction.

Procedure for detailed division of the heating circuit:

1. If necessary, you can divide the circuit in 2 ways:
a) manually - allows you to divide circuits according to the room layout
b) automatically - allows you to divide circuits according to the required areas

a) manual division: Click on the button Dilatation Joint

2. Dividing line can be set up by clicking left mouse button into any space
first to the left of the heating zone and then to the right of it. Make sure
that the dividing line crossed both lines (green and yellow). Two areas
appears as a result, divided by a dilatation joint.

Circuits can be divided with or without a dilatation joint. division of lines

without dilatation joint can be done by using the function division of
circuits. The circuits will be in one dilatation unit after the division.

(Fig. 2.4-14)

2-8
TechCON Manual Chapter 2 - Underfloor Heating

Dilatation joint can be deleted by clicking on the button Select or by pressing F5 to select entities. Left click to select created
dilatation joint and press Delete key.
3. Circuit can be divided manually even with a continuous dividing line. After clicking the button Dilatation Joint, right click
to call drop-down menu and then left click on the Continuous Dilatation (Fig. 2.4-15)
Fig. 2.4-15 Continuous dilatation option

Fig. 2.4-15 Continuous dilatation option

The circuit can be divided in a similar way, with the only difference that you can Fig. 2.4-14 Manual circuit division by a
dilatation joint wrap the dividing line. If you want to follow the right angles and straight lines, press F8 to turn ORTHO
function on. Press F8 again to turn it off. Examples of continuous dilatation are shown in Fig. 2.4-16 and 2.4-17.

Fig. 2.4-16, Fig. 2.4-17 Examples of continuous dilatation

b) automatic division

4. division of circuits can be done automatically. After clicking on Dilatation Joint, click the button Automatic division,
which is located in the middle of the bottom bar. (Fig. 2.4-18)

Fig. 2.4-18 Setting up automatic division of circuits

5. Dividing line can be set up the same way as for manual division of circuits. Click left mouse button to the outside of the
heating circuit from the left side and drag the dividing line through the heating circuit to the other side. By drawing dividing
line a perpendicular line appears to the dividing line. (Fig. 2.4-19).

Fig. 2.4-19 Setting up dividing line for automatic division of circuits

2-9
TechCON Manual Chapter 2 - Underfloor Heating

Move to the side to which you will set up the area of the circuit. In our case it is from the dividing line. Then click left mouse
2
button to the space above the dividing line. Enter Area (Fig. 2.4-20) appears. Enter the area, for example 4m and click OK.
2
The circuit is automatically divided into two parts, one of which will have exactly 4m .

Fig. 2.4-20 Setting up the area for automatic division of circuits or circuit apportioning

6. Automatic division of lines gives you another option to divide the circuits into equal parts. Instead of entering the exact
area, you type, for example, 2 to the next field titled Divine In the Rate of 1/ (Fig. 2.4-21). Circuit will be divided into two
parts of equal area.

If you need to divide the circuits, for example, to 4 equal parts, enter Divine
in the Rate of 1/4 and check the box titled Divide into Equal parts.

Fig. 2.4-21 Circuit division into two parts of equal area

Now, when you calculate the underfloor heating, note that the length of the heating coil has been reduced thanks to the
division of the heating circuit into two parts.

4. It should be noted that inserted wall boiler is in a certain height and if we were to begin to draw directly, it would hang
in the air. Therefore you need to carefully watch the navigation bar in the lower section. The current
value of Z is highlighted in the field z. This coordinate is also displayed at the cursor. If the coordinate is not
displayed at the crosshair, click on the Settings. In the dialog box, click the tab Pipes and check the View z-Coordinate
when setting up a pipe. (Fig. 3.2-28) you do not need to move the cursor into the box, you just need to type in the value
of z coordinate, where the pipes will be stored. By typing 0 and confirming by pressing ENTER, you will draw a vertical
pipe in the project from the boiler to the floor. In the plan view, you will see it as a ring and the entire pipe can be seen
in axometric. (Fig. 3.2-29)

Fig. 3.2-28 Navigation bar where you can view and edit coordinates

After entering the vertical pipe, you are located at the height z=0. Press F8 for orthogonal drawing and drag the pipe in
front of the boiler.

When you draw the pipe from the boiler leading downward, do not interrupt the function Drawing Pipes. Add
supply pipe straight down and immediately without interruption of the function, begin to draw a horizontal pipe
in front of the boiler according to the description in the previous par. 4. After drawing the vertical and horizontal
supply pipe, right click to display drop-down menu and select Enter Outlet Pipe, which can be drawn in the same
way.

If for any reason you interrupt the function Set up Pipes, you will need to connect the horizontal pipe to the vertical pipe
manually. The procedure is described in the following par. 5.
Example: Set up a vertical pipe from the boiler leading downward and interrupt the function Set up Pipes by pressing
ESCAPE key or right click and select Cancel in the drop-down menu.

5. In case you need the vertical pipe to be connected with the horizontal pipe, click on the circle indicating the vertical
pipe in the plan. Dialog box Connection pops up with the following options: (Fig. 3.2-30)
Upper point - new pipe is attached to a vertical pipe from the top side.
Lower point - new pipe is attached to a vertical pipe from the bottom side.
No point - new pipe is attached to a vertical pipe in the currently selected height for entering Z pipe.

Fig. 3.2-30 Selecting the method of connection of a horizontal pipe to a vertical pipe

In our case, select the second option: Lower point. Horizontal pipe is connected to a vertical pipe from the bottom side.

6. Follow the same procedure to create vertical and horizontal return pipe. After clicking on the icon to create a pipe,
right click to display drop-down menu and select the option Enter: Return pipe. (Fig. 3.2-31) Finish the pipe the same
way as you finished the supply pipe - in front of the boiler freely in space.

7. For better visibility, you can connect to the vertical pipe in axonometric view. New pipe is attached to the vertical pipe
exactly in the place, where you click on the pipe. For the connection in the current height for entering Z pipe, click on
the pipe, while pressing the CTRL key. The detailed procedure for drawing vertical and horizontal pipe is described in
the Chapter Drawing a pipe (Chapter 2.2.10).
8. To enter a pipe from heaters, click on the button Create a Pair of Pipes. When entering pipes from heaters, you do not
need to click directly on the connection. Click on the heater approximately in the middle. (Fig. 3.2-32)

Fig. 3.2-32 Method of connecting pipes from heaters

3-13
TechCON Manual Chapter 3 - Central Heating

More information about entering a pair of pipes can be found in Chapter 4.1.
The program will present you a dialog box with the selected connection that was the closest to the place you clicked.
(Fig. 3.2-33)

Fig. 3.2-33 Selecting a connection

Z coordinate is equal to zero, because when we were connecting heaters, we have shortened the garnitures to the floor,
thus we can directly draw a horizontal pipe. Since you have used the function Enter a Pair of Pipes the program draws a
supply and return pipe at the same time (Fig.
3.2-34). Follow the same procedure to connect the second heater.

Fig. 3.2-34 Pipe connected to the heater

After you create a horizontal pipe on all heaters, it is necessary to connect them correctly. For this purpose there are

commands Join Pipes, Extend Pipe, Cut Pipe and Parallel Pipes.
9. Click Parallel Pipes. You create a pipe that is perpendicular to the pipe that we were creating from the connection of
heaters and boiler. The value at the bottom bar is set to 100 by default. Change it as appropriate, in our case, e.g. 300,
and left click to the nearest parallel wall in the project, which will select it. A second click on the selected side will
create a parallel supply pipe with a wall in the project in the distance of 300mm from the wall. In order to create a
return pipe, we enter the distance again, however this time not from the wall, but from the supply pipe, e.g. 100mm,
and confirm it by a second click on the side, where we want to create the pipe. (Fig. 3.2-35)

3-14
TechCON Manual Chapter 3 - Central Heating

Fig. 3.2-35 Creating parallel pipes

10. Pipes needs to be interconnected. Click Join Pipes You can only connect pipes that lie in one plane. Left click the right pipe
and confirm it by clicking on the second pipe that you want to connect. (Fig. 3.2-36) You can monitor the steps that are
required to do on the navigation bar at the lower left corner.

Command Join Pipes creates valve joints (elbow, pipe bend, loose lay) according to the current settings. We can
configure the creation of valves as follows: Click Create a Pipe to activate the function for entering pipes. Right
click to display drop-down menu and select Properties. In the dialog box select Type of Arc. Click OK to confirm the setting.
The setting applies for functions Join Pipes, Cut Pipes.

Fig. 3.2-36 Joining pipes

11. Pipe from the second heater can be connected by extending it. Click Extend Pipe Left click the pipe up to which you want to
extend the pipe leading from the heater, confirm by a right click and then left click the pipe you want to extend.(Fig. 3.2-37)

Fig. 3.2-37 Expanding pipes

3-15
TechCON Manual Chapter 3 - Central Heating

12. Pipes from the heater can be connected and joined in a different way. If the pipes from boiler and the outermost
heater are connected and joined, you can connect the pipes from other heaters directly through the manifold without
expanding a pipe. Zoom in to the heater without a connection to a pipe, click Create a Pair of Pipes and again according
to the above-mentioned procedure connect the pipe to the heater by left clicking the heater and selecting the
respective connecting garniture in the dialog box and then dragging the pipe to the closest manifold, which is the same
type as the pipe that is being entered. The type of the pipe that is being entered is given by the color of the frame
around the cursor. The pipe that is being entered is marked with an arrow in the pair of pipes, left click on it and the
program will automatically join the pipes at the desired place. (Fig. 3.2-38)

According to the type of pipe to which you connect, the program will select a connecting valve. For steel pipe, the
program will keep the configuration angle according to the project without specifying the T-piece.

4. DESCRIPTION OF UPGRADE 2007 FUNCTIONS

4.1 Creating the supply and return simultaneously
Create a pair of pipes function allows to createsupply and return pipes simultaneously. Both horizontal pipes and risers can
be created. Pair of pipes can be connected to radiators, piping manifold, and underfloor heating circuits.

Note: Pair of pipes cannot yet be used for connection to the supply and outlet pipes of a boiler and tosupply pipe from
source to manifold.

4.1.1 Drawing horizontal pipes

4.1.1.1 Drawing a pair of pipes

Click onCreate a pair of pipes button

Create the pipe by clicking left mouse button in the project. To create a
pair of pipes the same principles apply as when creating specific pipe
(ORTHO, etc.). A selected property (properties setup is opened by pressing
the right mouse button and clicking on the Properties line) such as pipe
material, dimension or dimensioning blocking is set for both created pipes
identically. Selected type of pipe (supply or return) is set for active pipe.
Active pipe is marked with an arrow. Active pipe is the ones route you
draw directly. On Figure 1-1 the pipe marked with an arrow is specified as
supply.
Fig.1.1-1 Creating a pair of pipes

4.1.1.2 Setting the parameters for drawing a pair of pipes

In the bottom bar (Fig.1.1-2) you can specify the desired pipes spacing. Spacing can be adjusted when creating the pipes.
For example, after the connection to the manifold spacing is set at 25 mm, draw the pipe from the manifold and then adjust
the spacing as 100 mm and continue drawing.

Another possibility is to change side, on which a "second" (inactive) pipe will be drawn. The sideis selected to the left or
right from the active pipe, while looking in the direction of the arrow.

Fig.1.1-2 Setting the parameters for creating a pair of pipes

4.1.1.3 SHIFT - shortening the pipe

As already mentioned, when creating a pair of pipes, you draw route of active pipe. Second (inactive) pipe is drawn in the
specified distance from it and on the specified side. This feature can cause trouble if you need to terminate the second pipe
at an exact distance from the wall. An example follows.

When drawing the pipe in Figure 1.1-3 in the usual way,the second pipe will be drawn into the wall (Figure 1.1-4). This issue
can be solved by pressing the SHIFT key. The active pipe will be shortened by the spacing distance (Fig. 1.1-5), and after the
click will end at this point. The second pipe will now be displayed correctly. (Fig. 1.1-6).

4.1.1.4 Connecting to a pair of pipes

A pairs of pipes are connected to each other in the same way as a single pipe. By clicking on the end of the pipe the active
pipe connects to it and the second pipe automatically connects to the paired pipe. Active pipe will be assigned with type,
material, and dimension according to the selected pipe. When you want to connect a pipe of another material, it is
necessary to specify the pipe material after the connection is done! (However, you do not need to finish creating the
pipe). When you click at the line of the pipe, the active pipe connects to it through a pipe tee (branch). The second pipe
automatically connects via pipe teeto the paired pipe.

If pipe was not created as a pair of pipes, drawed pair of pipes connects to the selected pipe with active pipe only.

4.1.2 Drawing risers

4.1.2.1 Drawing risers with pair of pipes

A riser is created in the same way as a single pipe. Click in the area to specify the start of the route of pipes pair. Starting
points of the pair of pipes determine a rotation of following riser. In the lower bar enter the new Z-coordinate and press
ENTER. After creating vertical pipe continue creatingthe horizontal pipes.

Fig.1.2-1 Drawing a riser

4.1.2.2 Connecting risers to a pair of pipes

A connection to a pair of risers is done in the same way as for single pipe. When you click on circle in the plan, a dialog box
with options appears: Top point, Bottom point, None. By selecting the Top point option the pipe is connected to the riser
from the top, by selecting the Bottom point the pipe is connected to the riser from the bottom. By selecting None, the pipe
is connected to the riser at a height specified in the lower bar in the field Z:
(If holding CTRL key when clicking at the circle, option None is automatically selected)

If supply pipe creating is selected, clicking on the blue circle automatically switches to creating a return pipe of the
type similar to the riser chosen by clicking.

If you click at the riser in axonometric view, the pipe connects in the place of clicking. For accurate connection (at
the height specified in field Z) press and hold the CTRL key while clicking on the riser.

When clicking on the surface of heating circuit the program connectsactive pipe to the connection point of the same type
(supply/return) and the second pipe to the second connection point.

When clicking on the connection point directly, the type of the created pipe is automatically set accordingly to selected
connection point type.

4.2.3 Connecting to the manifolds

Pair of pipes can be connected to circuit terminals only. Two connection options are available:

1. Click directly on the manifold outlet pipe (circle) and confirm dialog box with OK button.
Active pipe is connected to the selected outlet, the second pipe is connected to the paired outlet.

4-3
TechCONmanual Chapter 4 - FunctionalDescription

2. Click on the edge of the manifold as close to the desired outlet as possible (if the manifold is in the direction
of the axis x or y, point in a way so that the outlet overlaps with crosshairs) and afterwards confirm dialog
windowwith OK button. Active pipe is connected to the selected outlet; the second pipe is connected to the
paired outlet.

4.2.4 Replacing the connecting piping on manifold

If necessary, e.g. if you draw the pipe to the manifold and find that the supply and return are located oppositely, the supply
and return pipes can be replaced at the outlet of the manifold.

Select themanifoldin the project, press the right mouse button and in the menu select Replacemanifoldpipes. Only those
pipes that are not connected will be replaced.

4.3 Simplified connection of fittings to radiators

Connection of fittings to radiators can be created in two ways: simplified and detailed.
Detailed connection allows you to stack any connection of fittings in precise accordance to your requirements.

By clicking on a radiator select it and press the right mouse button. In the menu you can choose one of the following
methods of connection:

Edit connection : simplified fittings creating.

Editconnection detailed : detailed fittings creating.

When selecting Edit Connection a dialog box opens with predefined connection options. Just choose a connection as shown
on the Figure (by clicking a button) and specify the exact type and dimension of the valve on supply and return. The
program connects a whole set to the radiator automatically.
With valves selected you can specify whether to dimension them or whether the selected dimension should remain. With a
simple click, you can also set on which of the two valves should the radiator be regulated.

If you have selected flat, segmented or ladder radiator, the description will be added to all these radiators. If you have
selected convector, boiler ormanifold, the text will be added to the same elements only.

4.5 Automatic description of radiators and manifolds

Radiators are inserted into the project automatically with description. However, once you set the description of the
radiators off when inserting into the project, it will remain off for the next steps.

Manifolds are also inserted into the project automatically with description, what simplifies listings of the calculations. These
descriptions can not be set off when added into the project.

4.6. Automatic retrieval of the floor composition and system from

transition surface
When creating the yellow transition surface (connection area) across multiple circuits and rooms, the program splits it over
into separate parts over each circuit. Also it sets the same floor composition and system board for such area, as an area
over which it is located. Said area is also automatically assigned to the room in which the circuit is located.

4.6.1 The principle of separation of a connection area

Specified yellow transition pipes area is automatically divided into several parts when it passes over the heating circuits
belonging to different rooms. If it passes over the circuits in one room, it is divided into several parts just in case, if the
circuits are located in different heating zones. Parts that after being divided are located over the heating circuits have floor
composition and system set according to these circuits. They are also assigned to the same rooms as circuits. Parts located
outside the circuits are set to the same, standard floor and system. They are all assigned to the room you have selected in
the dialog box after creating the area. It is necessary to assign these parts of the transition area to the respective rooms
after creating. Click to select the yellow transition area, press the right mouse button and select Properties in the menu. At
the top of the dialog box, on the right, select the desired room.

In the same way, it is possible to move existing "flooring" to another room in case of mistake.

4.6.2 The cooling of the water in the connection piping

The new version of the program considers the cooling of water in a connection to the heating circuit, which results in
increased circuit volume flow. Thanks to this option, you can also use the connection to create small heating zones for
rooms tempering.

4.7. Connecting heating circuits from different rooms

The feature allows you to combine multiple rooms with different temperatures and floors composition into a single circuit.
The program calculates the cooling of water in the whole circuit and suggests the necessary flow.

Fig. 7-1 Calculation of the heating circuit passing through several rooms

4-6
TechCONmanual Chapter 4 - FunctionalDescription

4.7.1 Calculation of rooms connected to one heating circuit

4.7.1.1 Drawing:

Draw a floor heating with 1 circuit to each room through which the floor heating circuit will pass. Then create the
connection points (in a circuit through which the pipe passes to an adjacent circuit, create two points of connection see
the figure). Finally connect the circuits with a pipe and connect the first circuit to manifold. The circuits will be calculated
from the manifold in the order as shown on Figure 1,2, and 3.

Fig. 7.1-1 Drawing of the heating circuit passing through several rooms

4.7.1.2 The principle of calculation:

Supply temperature in the first circuit is the same as the temperature at the outlet of the manifold. For each additional
connected circuit the program calculates the cooling of water in the previous circuit and decreases the temperature of the
supply by this value. Each further connected circuit has lower supply temperature. Pipes spacing and cooling of water in
each circuit (or each room) can be different and depend on room parameters such as floor structure, indoor temperature.
However, since this is one continuous heating circuit, the heating medium must move at constant flow and constant speed.
Since individual rooms may have different conditions (floor composition, indoor temperature), to achieve the required
performance different flow would be required in different rooms. In case if we set a constant flow, we have one tool only
to achieve the necessary performance and that is the pipesspacing. This change is, however, very rough "performance
tuning" and it is not possible to achieve complete coverage of the exact value of the heat loss of the room with it. The
program thus proceeds by calculating flow rate required for each circuit (room) first and selects the biggest value as
constant flow. The circuit with this flow (primary circuit) will cover the loss in a room for about 100%. The performance in
the remaining rooms will be adjusted only by changing the spacing. For this reason, it may happen that some rooms will be
slightly overheated and the othersslightly underheated.

In the Error messages window the values of each circuit are displayed. The primary circuit is marked with an asterisk.
Changing the boundary conditions affects the primary circuit the most.

When calculating the heating circuit passing through several rooms, the following limitations apply:

1. Room that you want to combine into one circuit with another room, may have a maximum of one circuit.
2. Circuit in a room can be connected to a maximum of 1 further heating circuit.

4.16. 3D texts on/off

This is a further feature for optimization of the work in the program. It enables or disablesdisplaying 3D texts in
axonometric view. As far as 3D texts are off, rectangles are displayed in axonometric view. In the plan view and a side view
the texts are displayed normally. Turning the 3D texts off significantly accelerates rotation and shift in axonometric view.
Another benefit is the reduction of project size by 5-15 Mb.

The feature isparticularly useful for larger projects, where its contribution is more significant.
Click on the Settings button. In the dialog box, choose the Display tab. At the bottom set the text switch to either On or
Offposition.
