IS401 PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Lecture 1: Unit Outline brief and

Introduction
Semester 1, 2017
Unit Description

In this unit, students get fundamental project management knowledge and

learn how to apply tools and techniques to project activities in order to
meet customer requirements, finish within a required time frame and on
budget. While the acquired skills are applicable to all kinds of projects, the
focus is on information systems projects. Scope, time and resource
management are addressed, with a particular emphasis on applying critical
path analysis to create feasible project schedules. Students work on
practical case studies in small teams, using commercial project
management software to plan a project, monitor and control the progress
and report on the status. Teaching is by lecture, group discussion and
tutorial. Assessment is by laboratory exercises (40%), written report (20%)
and final examination (40%).
LEARNING OUTCOMES

On the completion of this unit, students are able to:

1) Describe the major areas and stages of project management

2) Perform critical path analysis to create project schedules
3) Use commercially available software to create a project plan, track the
progress and report on the status
4) Evaluate different options to balance conflicting demands and / or correct
deviations from the project plan
5) Develop an IT Project Management Plan

of project management
Explain what a project is and provide examples of information
technology project.
Identify the project triangle (the triple constraint)
Explain what project management is and discuss key
elements of the project management framework.
Identify the growing need for better project management,
especially for information technology projects.
What is a Project?
A project is a temporary endeavor to produce a set of deliverables within
clearly specified time, cost and quality constraints.1

Elements of a Project
Temporary: definite beginning and end
Unique purpose: well defined objective, different from the results of other
functions of the organizations
Resources: often from various areas
Sponsor / customer: internal or external, provides direction and funding
Uncertainty: main reason for challenges; uniqueness makes definition of
objectives and estimation of effort & costs difficult;

To provide children in Papua New Guinea with new opportunities to explore new learning. To create educational
opportunities for Papua New Guineas poorest children by providing each child with a rugged, low-cost, low-power,
connected laptop with content and software designed for collaborative, joyful, self-empowered learning.
The Project Triangle

Each project is shaped by three factors:

Scope

Time Costs

Scope, time and cost are interdependent and (often)

competing goals.
Successful PM considers and balances all three goals.
Another significant element: Quality / customer satisfaction
What is Project Management?

Definition
Project Management is the application of knowledge,
skills, tools & techniques to project activities in order to
meet project requirements.1
Scope Time Cost Quality

Project Management (PM) involves balancing competing

demands among:
- Scope, time, cost and quality
- Stakeholders with different needs and expectations
1) Project Management Institute (PMI) Standards Committee, 2000, A Guide to the Project Management Body of
Knowledge (PMBOK Guide), The PMBOK Guide is a key document in the project management profession.

Project Management Framework
Knowledge Areas (1)
Knowledge Areas describe the key competencies a project manager must
develop. The four core knowledge areas are:
Scope Management
Defining and managing all the work required to successfully complete
the project
Time Management
Estimating work duration, developing an acceptable project schedule
and ensuring timely completion of the project
Cost Management
Preparing and managing the project budget
Quality Management
Ensuring that the project will satisfy the stated or implied needs
Project Management Framework
Knowledge Areas (2)
The four facilitating knowledge areas are:
Human Resource Management
Selection and effective use of the people involved in the project

Communications Management
Generating, collecting disseminating and storing of project information

Risk Management
Identifying, analyzing and responding to risks related to the project

Procurement Management
Acquiring or procuring goods and services needed for the project from
outside the organization
Stakeholder Management
Engaging stakeholders from start to finish of the project
Project Management Framework
Knowledge Areas (3)
Project integration management is an overarching function that affects
and is affected by all other knowledge areas.

Process(es) / Stages
There are several different approaches to project management, but
the stages typically follow common steps to problem solving:
