Me it for Cor n_ of new culve
to existing strand
Location of proposed works
Burnfoot Garage and Land to Rear of King Street, Wigton CA7 9HL
Introduction: Nature and Purpose of Works
‘The works consist of the construction of an open Trapezoidal Channel, atthe rear of the
site from behind Eastley terrace to The Strand (west-east approximately 60m). The
cchanne! will be constructed using both concrete walling and gabion baskets. The area
through which the channel is to be constructed is currently a farmers field.
‘The purpose of the channel is to allow flood water, from speet gill (during 100 year and
climate change event) to flow into The Strand and also provide storage during lesser
events.
‘Where the new channel meets the strand and for approximately 75m along the eastem
boundary going towards the front of the site (North) there are also some works, These
are as follows:
‘The existing Strand which is currently overgrown, and in a dry state, will be opened up
and formed into a new open channel. Any water encountered during works on this can be
diverted past the extent of the dig using a silenced pumping system or another option
‘would be to construct a temporary channel to divert the water for the extent of the works,
‘Any temporary dams needed can be constructed with gabion walls and/or clean imported
stone. A gabion retaining wall will be installed along the westem side of the strand and
behind this an attenuation tank is to be constructed (150m3 capacity). ‘This will be linked
to The Strand by 3 no outlets.
‘The newly formed open channel will then link with anew 600mm concrete pipe which
will be installed along the remainder of the eastern boundary and connected into existing
drainage.
Duration
‘We would hope to start these works at the beginning of June 20}0 for a duration Of6-8
weeks, ou BO

We will be using 360 excavators to excavate for the new channel and for the construction
of same. Site dumpers (9 tonne) will be used to move materials within site, Machinery
will enter site from main road through existing gateway. Excavators will also be used to
expose The Strand and carry out any profiling and retaining wall works here. Machinery
will be located on existing hard standing ground to carry out excavating, grading and
installation of retaining structures and will not need to enter the watercourse directly.
‘Sequence of works
We will excavate at southem boundary of site to instal] Im x 1m gabion wall on a stone
base allowing for working space for operatives. Once this is complete we will dig out
remainder of channel to profile and excavate shallow trench for foundation of concrete
retaining wall and then form retaining wall.
‘The works at the easter side of the site (existing strand) will be undertaken
simultaneously with the works at the southern end, all undergrowth bushes etc will be
removed and disposed of in a licensed tip. Any water in the channel can be diverted past
the entrance of the works using a pumping system or temporary diversion channel. We
will then excavate a trench to allow for the installation of gabion foundations and
retaining wall and then install same.
Once completed we will form the new revised ground profile of the strand (these works
are detailed on AECOM drawings no 60037644 F SKO01 and SK002) and re-line the
channel with grass.
We will then dig for and install 600mm concrete pipe along remainder of easter
boundary and connect this to the existing drainage with a new 1.8m catchpit manhole
linking the two. As this is being done the new attenuation tank will be excavated for and
installed.
Excavated Materials
Any excavated topsoil will be stored in 2 designated area on site for re-use during,
landscaping at the end of the contract. All other materials excavated will be disposed of
toa licensed waste facility.
Plant Storage - Maintenance
All machinery will be parked overnight in a secure compound within the site, well away
from the strand. Re-fuelling and maintenance will also take place within this compound,
All Tinnelly Construction plant and equipment is modem and maintained to the highest
standard (free from any oil/fuel leaks).Pollution
Excavators will carry out all excavating, grading etc from hard standing areas avoiding
any direct entry to the watercourse eliminating pollution from fuel or oil. In the unlikely
event of a pollution incident occurring we would have a spill control kit available. If
needed a temporary trap can be formed to catch any silt that may be disturbed during
works,
ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT ON SITE
Care will be taken to minimise disruption to work area and local users. Care will also be
taken to minimise dirtéclay being carried onto the road. Materials will be disposed off in a
fully licensed tip by a licensed haulier,
‘General precautions including segregated work area will be used to control noise and dust
from excavating / cutting of kerbs.
Site pack to be available before excavation work commences — pack to include existing
services drawings, GPR scan details and appropriate utility company contact details.
‘A Permit to dig is to be issued from site manager on a daily basis before excavation
begins.
SYSTEM OF WORK
Daily working will commence at 7.30 am. All site workers to report to the site
‘management upon arrival. Tinnelly construction foremen to receive permit to dig from
‘TC site management.
Site foreman to ensure that all Tinnelly construction employees have received site
induction from TC.
Site foremen and employees to be familiar with the site pack — location of existing
services to be made known to all employees and employees to be familiar with utility
drawings, GPR scans and other information gained from TC.
Site foremen to identify all overhead obstructions if any ~ cables and arrange for the
appropriate goal posts to be positioned underneath,
‘Materials will be delivered to a storage area as outlined by site management. All
deliveries will be directed to this area in accordance with site management guidelines and
they will safely unload the delivery in a designated area away from any hazards such as
‘overhead power lines etc. The delivery lorry will be subject to any instruction given to
him/her by authorised personnel. A banks man will be provided where necessary to assist
in the off-loading operation and if required to direct the lorry into or out of the storage
area.‘The materials will be brought to the work zone as and when required by Telescopic
forklift or JCB etc. they will be safely placed in the work zone for prompt installation.
Safe storage practice will be adhered to at all times and bales of kerbs must be stored in a
‘safe manner at all times.
Precautions as outlined by TC will be applied at all times ~ there will be no digging near
high voltage cables or any cables buried in concrete and, as far as possible, all cables
should be isolated before excavation begins.
Excavation to formation levels will be undertaken as specified by the engineers on site.
All areas around existing services (If present) will be compacted to ensure appropriate
shuttering is in place so that services are not disturbed.
All machinery will be stored securely each night, And dangers to the public, vandalism of
plant and waste materials will rank highly in our working methods.
‘Where possible all materials will be disposed of off-site as soon as possible, otherwise a
designated storage area as agreed by TC will be used.
Concrete/stone Delivery Lorries will be carefully directed to the work zone and the
concrete/stone will be discharged directly as directed by the supervisor on-site. A
dedicated banks man will guide the concrete lorry and will assist in the lorry safely re
centering the roadway. The concrete lorry will be directed to the designated wash out area
‘as provided by TC.
‘When materials are delivered they will be subject to direction from a qualified banks man
and will unload in a safe manner. A “SAY HELLO, WAVE GOODBYE” policy will be
adopted by our site personnel when communicating with machinery operators ensuring
that the machine operator is aware at all times the whereabouts of authorised personnel in
the vicinity of the machine / lorry etc.
req ‘on site as identified by TC —
safety helmet, high visibility clothing, safety footwear, at all times.
‘Working with cement / concrete — gloves will be wom at all times by all employees and
safety glasses will be wor to prevent possible injury to the eyes.
Use of power tools and other equipment - eye protection will be worn at all times when
using power tools and hearing protection will be worn as necessary depending on the
noise levels from the tools used (hearing protection will be mandatory for tools such as
disc saws, Kango hammers etc).
