Reports: Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar speeches on national securities, cyber-crime racial

harmony and extremism

National securities

National security. according to Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar, means security from threats or

attacks from people, organizations or countries that are impact the well-being of a nation and

its citizen as a whole rather than of any specific individuals or within the nation. Such threats

and attacks are usually directed at harming the lives of people and property. However, this

does not rule out other illegal acts. For example, counterfeit currency may be circulated in a

country to damage its economic health. He also added believe, national security is equally

important for every country. However, the reaction of different countries to the perceived

threat and the best way to counter it, determines their approach to national security.

Cyber-crime

A crime epidemic is silently sweeping the globe as criminals turn our ever-increasing

dependence on computers against us, and even the government of Malaysia is not immune.

Cyber-attacks fall into two broad categories: breaches in data security and sabotage. Personal

data, intellectual property, trade secrets and information relating to bids, mergers and prices

are tempting targets for a data security breach. Sabotage can take the form of denial of service

attacks, which flood web services with bogus messages, as well as more conventional efforts
to disable systems and infrastructure. Most cyber-crime incidents go unreported, and few

companies come forward with information on their losses. That is not surprising given the

risk to an organizations reputation and the prospect of legal action against those that own up

to cyber-crime. Few of the biggest cyber criminals have been caughtmany have yet to be

identified. Governments are tightening laws to ensure organizations take greater

responsibility for cyber security and report cyber breaches. The reporting of breaches is

important in that it enables government agencies to take action to strengthen security, allows

individuals to mitigate harm and encourages organizations to adopt effective security

measures.

Social media

Social media is an inevitable force that is being used for activism presently and no doubt will

be used in bigger and better ways in the future. The advancement of technology has made it

possible for social media to be spread worldwide. As social media spreads to most countries

vast connections are made. With these great connections come great opportunities. The main

one is the use of social media as activism to run a social movement. Social media activism is

successful in exposing the world to current events. However, with this exposure comes the

falsification of facts. But this does not prevent the use of social media for activism. The tool of

social media for activism is successful at gaining participants, but becomes high-risk once

someone becomes an active protestor. Social media activism is completely successful at

starting a movement and getting it spread worldwide, but because it is not consisted of an

organized hierarchy it fails at completing the movement in a way that satisfies most. As the

use of social media is used for activism it will become possible for social media activism to be

completely successful. It is only a matter of time before the global resources will develop

ideas and solutions for the completion of social movements.

Social harmony

We humans all need to learn to respect and care for one another if we are to have happy

minds and peace - inner peace, peace in our neighbourhoods, world peace. Anger and hatred

and greed bring about conflict and crime and discontent. Love and kindness and compassion

bring about happiness and joyfulness and peace. It's that simple. Racial harmony is simply

one consequence of respect and caring - when people don't get caught up in temporary

superficial distinctions like skin colour and cultural background. We humans all need to learn

and caring - when people don't get caught up in temporary superficial distinctions like skin

colour and cultural background history has taught us that most of the wars -past and present,

were and are fought due to racial indifference. Only a tolerant, progressive and appreciative

society can bring harmony to a country and not religion, which is the main cause of most

wars-yesterday, today and tomorrow.

Extremism

Since the 1970s, Malaysia has identified Islamic extremism and militancy as one of the

threats to its national security. Although relatively small in number and strength, groups

operating under this tendency caused serious security concern to the state, which in turn

adopted the twin strategies of suppression and engagement to respond to these challenges.

The state has openly declared that it will not tolerate any group or activity that can create

disunity and disturb racial harmony in a country whose survival is highly dependent on

internal peace and stability. While the state considers it important to eliminate threats and
challenges from Islamic extremism and militancy, it is also mindful of the fact that

antagonistic policies towards Islamic groups might result in a backlash that will endanger

regime security and national unity. It must be said that in reality, in Malaysia, the influence of

Islamic extremists and their activities is limited due to certain factors, of which some are

unique to Malaysia, as well as the effectiveness of measures taken to eliminate this influence.
