HAVE YOU HEARD? NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

. WORLD NEEDS TO RESTORE FORESTS ‘EVEN WITHOUT CLIMATE CHANGE’ -

The world would still need to take urgent action to restore its lost and degraded forests
even if the climate were not changing, an international forestry conference has heard.
However, climate change made the problem of forest loss and degradation even more
urgent, Tim Rollinson, Director-general of the British Forestry Commission, told the 18th
Commonwealth Forestry Conference in Edinburgh, Scotland.

. LAOS PLANNING INCREASE FOREST COVER TO 65% OF LAND AREA - Laos

plans to increase forest coverage to 65 per cent of its territory by 2015 and 70 per cent
by 2020, earthtimes.org reported, qyoting state media reports. The government
reportedly announced its target as part of a reduce emissions from deforestation and
degradation (REDD) initiative announced in Vientiane Tuesday, the Vientiane Times
reported.

. FSC LAUNCHES U.S. FOREST MANAGEMENT STANDARD - The United States
national initiative of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC–US) has announced the
launch of the FSC-US Forest Management Standard for forest operations in the
contiguous U.S. The FSC web site said the revised standard has been developed to
capture on-the-ground conditions that represent true forest stewardship and provide the
foundation for FSC-certified forestry in the U.S. The result is a label that identifies for
consumers the products that are sourced from forests managed to the highest
environmental, social, and economic standards.

. WETLANDS LOSS ENDANGERS BIRDS ON AFRICAN-EURASIAN FLIGHT The

ENS Newswire reported that one-third of the critical wetlands that migratory waterbirds
need when traveling between Africa, the Middle East, Europe and Central Asia are
entirely unprotected, according to the first survey using a new online information tool. As
a result, 42 per cent of these waterbird species are in decline, bird experts warn. More
than 200 scientists from 100 countries in the African-Eurasian region collaborated to
develop the Critical Site Network Tool. Go to:

. COMMUNITY FORESTRY LEGAL LOOPHOLES TO HARVEST NATIONAL

FOREST AREAS - Headlines Himalaya reports the government in Nepal has said that
25 different forests in 15 districts suffered rampant deforestation and encroachment. A
panel formed by the Natural Resources sub-committee of the Parliament had visited
several regions in west Nepal and found officers from the District Forest Office,
Community forest user groups, had registered national forest areas into several dozen
community forests and then cut down live trees within 10 days and pocketed millions of
rupees by selling in Nepali and Indian markets. No prohibition exists on cutting down
trees in community forests, hence the transfers to the community forest user groups.
