Topics: Statistics Instruction: Answer all questions on test pad.

1. The mean of four numbers is m . The sum of the squares of the numbers
is 100 and the standard deviation is 3k. Express m in terms of k. [3 marks]

2. The set of positive integers consists of 2, 5 and m. The variance of this set of
integers is 14. Find the value of m. [4 marks]

3. A set of data consists of five numbers. The sum of the numbers is 60 and
the sum of the squares of the numbers is 800. Find, for the five numbers,
(a) the mean (b) the standard deviation. [3 marks]

4. A set of seven numbers has a mean of 9.

(a) Find x.
(b) When a number k is added to this set, the new mean is 8.5. Find the value of k.
[3 marks]

5. Table 5 shows the frequency distribution of the scores of a group of pupils in a game.

Score Number of pupils

10-19 1
20-29 2
30-39 8
40-49 12
50-59 k
60-69 1
Table 5
(a) It is given that the median score of the distribution is 42. Calculate the value of k.
[3 marks]

(b) Use graph paper . Using a scale of 2 cm to 10 scores on the horizontal axis and 2
cm to 2 pupils on the vertical axis, draw a histogram to represent the frequency
distribution of the scores. Find the mode score. [4 marks]

(c) What is the mode score if the score of each pupil is increased by 5? [1 mark]

6. Diagram 6 is a histogram which represents the distribution of the marks obtained by
40 pupils in a test.

00.5 Marks
10.5 20.5 30.5 40.5 50.5
Diagram 6
(a) Without using an ogive, calculate the median mark. [3 marks]
(b) Calculate the standard deviation of the distribution. [4 marks]

7. Table 7(i) shows the cumulative frequency distribution for the scores of 32 students in
a competition.
Score < 10 < 20 < 30 < 40 < 50
Number of students 4 10 20 28 32
Table 7(i)

(a) Based on Table 7(i), copy and complete Table 7(ii)

Score 0-9 10-19 20-29 30-39 40-49

Number of students

Table 7(ii) [1 mark]

(b) Without drawing an ogive, find the interquartile range of the distribution. [5 marks]

8. Table 8 shows the marks obtained by 40 candidates in a test.

Marks Number of candidates
10-19 4
20-29 x
30-39 y
40-49 10
50-59 8
Table 8
Given that the median mark is 35.5, find the value of x and of y.
Hence, state the modal class. [6 marks]
