Objective of the Course:


To provide a comprehensive knowledge of overall fluid kinematics, fluid dynamics, laminar
& turbulent flow etc.

Student Learning Outcomes/Objectives:


At the closing stage of the course, the student will be able to understand the fundamental
concept fluid mechanics and hydraulic system. Which is important for to study of
Fundamentals of mechanical engineering & fluid statics.

Instructional Methods and Pedagogy:


Faculty members shall explain in a class room using black board and multimedia projector
through PowerPoint presentation.

viscosity, Simple numerical examples.
Unit II

Laws of fluid statics, Types, working and applications of pressure
measuring devices (Manometers and mechanical gauges) with
simple numerical examples, Selection criteria for pressure
measuring devices
Unit III
3 Fluid kinematics 12
a. Concept of control volume.
b. Fluid flow
i. Continuity and energy equation.
ii.Momentum equations (without derivation) and its
application in impact of jet.(The detail applications should
be dealt in Unit VII.)
iii. Types of fluid flow.
iv. Flow patterns for ideal, laminar, turbulent and
Compressible fluid flow of one dimension.
c. Simple numerical problems on all of above.
Unit IV
4 Fluid dynamics and flow measurement 12
Fluid energy-types and interrelations, Euler's equation, Concept and
definition, Understanding various terms in Eulers equation (No
derivation), Bernoulli's equation, Concept and definition,
Limitations and assumptions, Derivation from Eulers equation,
Applications,
Flow measurement.
i. Parameters and units of measurements related to following
devices.
ii. Devices- classifications, principle, working, applications without

derivation. (Pitot tube, Venturi meter, Flow nozzle, Rota meter,
Orifice, Notch).
Selection criteria for flow measuring device, Simple numerical
examples on all of above.
UNIT V
5 Flow through pipes & Hydro pneumatic elements and devices 9
Introduction to pipe and pipe flow, Reynoldss experiment, friction
factor, Darcys equation, Moodys chart, Water hammer effect,
Selection criteria for pipes and pipe sizes, Types, sketch, working,
specifications, symbols and applications of hydraulic and pneumatic
elements like: Cylinder, Valve, Manifolds, etc., Hydraulic devices-
Hydraulic press, Hydraulic accumulator, Hydraulic lift, Hydraulic
ram, Hydraulic crane, Hydraulic coupling, Hydraulic intensifier.
UNIT VI
6 Hydraulic pumps & prime movers 9
Concept and classification of pumps, Detailed study (construction,
working and applications) of Centrifugal pump, Reciprocating pump,
Submersible pump, Rotary positive displacement type pumps like
Gear pump and Van pump, Vacuum pump, Performance (efficiency,
discharge, head, specific speed and power consumption) of
centrifugal pump and reciprocating pump with simple numerical
example, Characteristic curves of centrifugal pump and
reciprocating pump, Need for priming of centrifugal pump,
Selection of pumps, Hydraulic prime movers (Turbine).
Classification, construction, working principle and applications of
Pelton wheel, Francis turbine, Kaplan turbine, Selection criteria of
prime movers
