pipe diameters 8"NPS or less.

Para. 6.2.2
Radiographic film can be processed either manually or automatically

(For other screen material
written approval from designated SA NDT Level III is required before its
use).

Image Quality Indicators (IQI): IQIs shall be wire type. Following IQIs
shall be used: 1)
EN wire type as desribed in BS EN 462.1

3) DIN wire type as desribed in
DIN 54 109 4) ISO wire type
as desribed in ISO 1027
(See Attachment 1)

IQIs shall be selected from either the same alloy material group or Para. 6.4.3
B5 grade or from an alloy material group or grade with less radiation SAEP-1143,
absorption than the material being radiographed.

Viewing facilities: Viewing facilities shall provide subdued background

Para. 6.5
lighting of an intensity that will not cause reflections, shadows or glare on
B6 SAEP-1143,
the radiograph. Radiographic viewers shall meet minimum requirements
setforth in ISO 5580 and shall provide variable light source.

Acceptable radiation sources:

1) X ray generators (upto 6Mev)
2) Iridium 192 (Ir-192) (Upto
Para. 6
200Ci) 3) Cobalt 60 (Co-60)
SAEP-1143,
(Upto 100Ci) 4) Selenium
B7 Para. 9.3 & 10.2
75 (Se-75) (Upto 50 Ci) 5) Cs-137
SAEP-
sources are acceptable as control sources for X ray pipeline crawlers
1141
Note: In Offshore only Ir-192
(Maximum 30Ci) shall be used . For Se-75 specific approval from ID-
RPO is needed.

Densitomer: Densitometer shall be calibrated atleast every 90days using

national standard step tablet or a step wedge calibration film traceable to
national standard step tablet. The densitometer is acceptable if the
density readings do not vary by more than +/-0.05 density units from the T-260
B8
actual density stated on national standard step tablet or a step wedge ASME Sec V
calibration film. Periodic calibration verification checks shall be
performed at the begining of each shift , after 8hrs of continuous use or
after changes of apertures whichever comes first.

Stepwedge comparison film: Step wedge comparison films shall be

verified annually and the measured density readings by calibrated T-260
B9
densitometer donot vary by more than +/-0.1 density units from the ASME Sec V
density stated on the step wedge comparison film.

C Examination

Radiographic technique: A single wall exposure technique shall be used

for radiography whenever practical. When it is not practical, a double Para. 7.1
C1 wall technique shall be used. The direction of the central beam of SAEP-1143,
radiation should be centered on the area of interest whenever practical.
(See attachment 1)

Para. 8.1.2
Use of Co-60 is only permitted when the thickness of the material
C2 SAEP-1143,
exceeds the practical limits of Ir-192 or Se-75.
Geometric unsharpness(Ug): The minimum source to object distance
shall be great enough to ensure that Ug of the radiograph does not
exceed the values noted below:

Para. 8.2
C3 SAEP-1143,

Location markers: The location markers shall be placed on the part, not
on the exposure holder or casette. Location markers shall not intrude
into the area of interest. The starting point and the direction of
numbering shall be identified adjacent to the weld. Number belt spacing
around the circumference of the piping (size 3.5" NPS and more) shall
not exceed table 6, SAEP-1143
Para. 8.3
C4 SAEP-1143,

IQI selection: IQI shall be selected as per Table 7 & 8 SAEP-1143. IQIs
Para. 8.6
shall be placed on source side at all times. When film side IQIs are used,
C5 SAEP-1143,
a lead letter 'F' shall be placed adjacent to or on the IQIs and shall not
interfere with the IQI or be on matter of interest.

IQI selection for welds joining dissimilar materials or welds with dissimilar
filler metal shall be based on weld metal. When the density limits canot
T-276.3
C6 be met with one IQI, and the exceptional density areas is at the interface
ASME Sec V
of the weld metal and base metal, the material selection for the
additional IQI shall be based on the base material

Number of IQIs: One IQI at center and one IQI with in 1" from one end of
Para. 8.7
the film shall be placed for Rt techniques requiring multiple exposures
C7 SAEP-1143,
and the film to be interpreted is greater than 5". Minimum 4 IQIs are
required for panoramic exposure.

All radiographic films shall be free from :

a) Fogging
b) Processing defects such as streaks, watermarks, or chemical stains Para. 9.1
D1 c) Scratches, SAEP-1143,
finger marks, crimps, dirtiness, static marks, smudges or tears

d) False indications due to defective screens

Radiographic density limitations: The density range for Gamma Para. 9.3
D2 radiography shall be 2 to 4 and for X rays 1.8 to 4. A tolerance of 0.05 in SAEP-1143,

exceeds the permissible variation, additional IQI shall be used for each
exceptional area and the area of interest reradiographed.

IQI sensitivity: Radiography shall be performed with a technique of Para. 9.5

Excessive backscatter: If a light image of the lead letter "B" appears ona
Para. 9.6
darker background of the radiograph, protection from back scatter is
D5 SAEP-1143,
insufficient and the radiograph shall be considered unacceptable. A dark
image of the letter "B" on a lighter background is not cause for rejection.

Film viewing: Radiographs shall be interpreted only in those areas in

Para. 10
which the IQIs have established that a suitable radiographic technique
D6 SAEP-1143,
has been used. Composite viewing of double film exposure is not
permitted unless in writing approval from designated SA NDT Level III.

Film Interpretation: The radiographs shall be examined and interpreted
