The next resources stated that, penetration-theory solution for the effect of a
second-order irreversible liquid-phase chemical reaction on the rate of gas absorption
has been computed numerically on an IBM-704 computer. A linearized, time-centered,
implicit finite-difference metod was used to solve the nonlinear partial-differential
equations. Other than that, the method was very effective permitting the solution of the
equations for a wide range of the parameters of the interest. Then, the penetration-
theory results are compared with the film-theory solution, and it is shown that the
solutions to the two theories agree within 16% if they are compared for the conditions
which produce the same asymptotic solution for an infinitely rapid chemical reaction.
After that, a simplified equation and some correction charts are presented which permit
a rapid, accurate estimation of the penetration-theory solution over a wide range of
variables.

In addition of that, the other resources state that penetration theory solutions are
provided for gas absorption with or without a (peudo) first-order irreversible chemical
reaction in concurrent and countercurrent flow wetted-wall columns, taking into account
a constant gas-film resistances as well as the axial decrease in gas composition due to
absorption, while assuming non-rippling laminar flow for the liquid phase and plug flow
for the gas phase. The most important is,limiting solutions are also obtained for
situations when either the gas phase resistance or the axial variation of gas composition
is negligible. Then, the results now are suitable for 3 and can be used for both
Newtonian and non-Newtonian liquids that are available.

Other than that,a penetration theory analysis is presented for the problem of gas
absorption, with chemical reaction involving a volatile liquid reactant. Furthermore,
model equations are derived and solution techniques are presented. It is shown that as
long as the diffusivities of two reactants are equal, the enhancement factors predicted
by film and penetration theories only mildly differ. Except for slow and instantaneous
reaction regimes, the liquid reactant volatility can be markedly detrimental to
enhancement of absorption rate by chemical reaction that were previously in progress.

A Penetration Model For Gas Absorption With First Order Chemical Reaction
Accompanied by Large Heat Effects

G. T. Clegg, R. Mann

Published 19 February 2010

To add further with, there were certain resources stated that penetration model
has been developed to describe gas absorption with first order chemical reaction under
conditions where the heat released due to solution and reaction makes the transfer
process non-isothermal. Other than that, the model predicts that under certain not
unrealistic physico-chemical condition the absorption rate can be very much reduced,
and even to the extent where it falls below the rate obtainable for absorption in the
absence of chemical reaction to occur.
