Critical Reading 2

Summary:

When I read the article Wasting Time on the Internet 101 I first questioned, how can we
fix the issue of students wasting time on the internet using social medias? The article I found
related to this is was all about MySpace. I found that the most popular websites on the internet
are social media sites. Clearly this article is dated since MySpace got run over by new social
media websites like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, but it gets the same point across. Social
media websites are the most time-consuming websites on the internet. But could knowing this
help fix this epidemic somehow? Many people do realize that they waste time on the internet all
of the time, but there are many people out there that deny and neglect the fact that they could
be much more productive without wasting time on the internet, specifically social medias. This
article addresses some reasons why students enjoy wasting so much of their time on the
internet and some possible solutions to this. Most of which is because they are bored and want
something to entertain them. But specifically, on social media websites people enjoy that they
can be whoever they want to, and communicate with others virtually. All of these factors
contribute to the overlapping issue that people are wasting their time, while they could be
making strides towards solving other issues. Everybody needs a little break from progress here
and there, but there are too many people that live on social media.

Rhetorical Analysis:

David Siegfried is the author of this article, he is an associate director at UC Berkley and
has had experience with teaching English at James Campbell High School. He has also had
many other jobs related to writing and literature, but it was hard to find other works of his. His
purpose in writing this article was to inform the readers that websites like MySpace, at the time,
were used improperly. Social media websites are too overused. Instead of escaping from work
for a while to go on social media sites people were going on there all the time because they feel
the need to waste their time more and more often. David Siegfried fails to come up with a
solution to this problem, but instead just addresses it to the reader. In a way this could be seen
as a solution, by informing more and more people so that everyone knows about this issue. And
since the time this article was released the problem has become even more relevant.
Personally, I feel that this tactic will not work because people in this generation are too lazy to
care. Our social profiles are too important than being productive. And I fear that since with each
generation we as humans are becoming more and more technologically driven this issue will not
stop, but will instead strengthen. Each generation from now on will keep becoming more reliant
on social media unless a change happens. Technology can be very important so that people
can be productive, but can also be detrimental to peoples productivity.
