What is test anxiety?
A state of distress encompassing thoughts and behavior responses over
concern about possible negative consequences of failure on test or
evaluation
I must perform perfectly on this exam. If I do not pass this exam, I am dumb. If I do
not pass this test, I cannot go on to the next grade.
Upset stomach, heart racing, sweaty palms, headaches, shaking, etc.
Small levels of anxiety could be motivating; high levels can be hindering
Around half of Carrboro Elementary third grade students expressed
nervousness about the EOGs during a post test in classroom guidance
Background of Test Anxiety
Test Anxiety prevalence rate: 10-40%
Rise in test anxiety since the induction of
high-stakes testing in schools (Yeo & Liem,
2016)
Test anxiety can impede test performance
Can lead to black out, somatic responses,
trouble sleeping

It is hard not to say Dont be nervous, It is just a test, There is no reason to
be worried, etc.
But it is like saying calm down to someone who is angry...has it ever worked?
Be a calm, safe place for your child to express their anxiety
Validate. Validate. Validate.
It is okay to feel nervous about the test tomorrow.
Many people feel nervous when they take tests.
Tell me what you are feeling.
Help them name the feeling
It seems like you are nervous about your test
tomorrow.
You are telling me that you cannot sleep. I wonder
if you are nervous about your test tomorrow. Lets
work together to help you.
Let them draw or write out anxieties

Remember, EOGs (or any tests) do not speak to your childs love or
character; it just shows how well they do on that particular exam!
