195-316 Lesson #4 Carly Gon April 6, 2017

Lesson Plan
Date: April 6, 2017
Grade: 9

Unit: Geometry

Title of the lesson: Line Symmetry

Main Curricular Area: Math

Other Curriculum Areas: English Language Arts, Art, Dene Kede,

Science

Lesson Overview: Students will be introduced to symmetry. We will look at

demonstrating and understanding line and rotation symmetry using 2-
dimensional shape or design. Students will learn to see that certain shapes
or designs can be put cut in one or more ways, but still have the same figure.

Set-up: Materials will be ready; set-up of materials ready for use; technology
for Power Point/Smart Board ready to go.

Pre-Assessment: Students will learn about line symmetry.

General Outcome: Describe and analyze position and motion of objects

and shapes.

Specific Outcome: 5. Demonstrate an understanding of line and rotation

symmetry. [C, CN, PS, V]

Objectives: Students will be able to:

Classify a given set of 2-D shapes or designs according to the number
of lines of symmetry.
Complete a 2-D shape or design given one half of the shape or design
and a line of symmetry.
Identify a line of symmetry or the order and angle of rotation
symmetry in a given tessellation.
Create or provide a piece of artwork that demonstrates line and
rotation symmetry, and identify the line(s) of symmetry and the order
and angle of rotation.
Introduction to transformations in shapes and designs.
Materials: Power Point/Smart Board/White Board, Pencils, Erasers, Rulers

Assessment:

Formative: Observation, Checklist

Summative: Presentation/Performance of results

Lesson Procedures:

Motivation: What is a mirror? What do we do with mirrors and how do we use

it? What other ways can we use mirrors? In this lesson, we are going to learn
about line of symmetry and transformation.

Sequence of Lesson:

Power Point Introduction: What is Line of Symmetry?

Whole Class: Find the line of symmetry
Practice: Draw the line of symmetry and determine the number of lines
for each shape/design.

Using Transformations: Translation, reflections, and rotation.

Give example: of translation on grid.
Whole Class: Describe the translation.
Practice: Determine how many units horizontal, vertical or oblique.

Drawing reflections: what is reflection?

Give example: line of reflection on a grid using x and y
Whole Class: Describe the reflection.
Student Handout: Practice.

Closure/Summary: After students have completed their practice sheet,

they are to explain why question b is a line of reflection on the y-axis as a
ticket.

Using the grid below to redraw the figure from the power point. Label your x
and y-axis.

Directions:
a) Redraw the figure from the Power Point. Make sure they have the same
coordinates as the PP.
b) Draw the reflection image if the y-axis is the line of reflection. Label
the figure DEFG.
c) Draw the reflection image of the figure DEFG if the x-axis is the line of
reflection. Label the figure DEFG.
d) Translate the DEFG 8 units to the left, and 7 units down. Label the
translated image DEFG.

Question:

Is the figure DEFG a reflection of the figure DEFG with the y-axis as the
line of reflection? Explain your reasoning.
