LANDING GEAR ASSIGNMENT 1

QUESTION 1. What configuration main landing gear are located rearward of aircraft C.G?

The type of main landing gears where is located rearward of the aircraft C.G is the
configuration of tricycle landing gears.

QUESTION 2. What type of landing gear that main gear ahead of aircraft CG?

The type of landing gears C.G is the configuration of conventional landing gears.

QUESTION 3. What is used to maintain proper alignment of the upper and lower cylinders?

The upper and lower bearings are used for maintaining proper alignment of the upper and
lower cylinder.

QUESTION 4. What is the purpose of locating cam?

The main purpose of the locating cam is to hold the nose wheel in the centered position.

QUESTION 5. What is used to prevent shock strut from over extending?

Snubbing device consisting of a recoil valve on a piston are normally used to prevent shock
strut from over extending.

QUESTION 6. What is the purpose of fluid inside the oleo strut?

The main purpose of fluid inside the oleo strut is to provide a cushioning effect inside the
oleo strut is to provide cushioning effect to reduce the shock of landing.

QUESTION 7. How shock strut absorbs landing shock?

The shock struts absorb landing shock when the fluid flows through the orifice into the upper
chamber, and the air in the upper chamber is compressed to the point that the entire weight of
the aircraft is supported by the air in the landing gear struts. The compressed air then acts as a
shock absorber during the time that the aircraft is taxiing.

QUESTION 8. What is used to absorb taxi and static load on shock strut?

Compress air is used for absorbing taxi and static load on shock strut.

QUESTION 9. What control rate of compression on oil/air shock struts?

Compress air is used for absorbing taxi and static load on shock strut.

QUESTION 10. How to determine the proper amount of shock strut inflation?

Proper amount of shock strut inflation can be determined by ensuring that proper amount of
fluid has been poured through the filter plug hole and the inner piston should be expended
and compressed between 2 to 3 times to remove air and once this is done. The filter plug
should be tightening and by referring to the manufacturer service manual, the proper amount
of nitrogen should be filed into the air chamber through valve. Once sufficient air has been
filled the aircraft must be jack off and this time the aircraft will inflate until the correct distant
is exposed on the strut distant tube.

QUESTION 11. What is the purpose of spacer or bumper ring sleeves?

The main purpose of a spacer or bumper ring sleeve is to incorporate to limit the extension
stroke of the strut.

QUESTION 12. What does the probable cause shock strut bottom up upon landing

The probable cause shock strut bottom up upon landing can be cause by the impact of force
on ground to the fire when the aircraft lands.

QUESTION 13. How to check fluid level on oleo strut landing gear?

Fluid level on oleo struts are normally checked by collapsing the struts and all the air from
the strut is removed. Once the strut is collapsed the fluid level should be even with the filler
opening unless other indications are given by the manufacture.

QUESTION 14. Describe oleo strut servicing with fluid.

Oleo struts that contains fluid is serviced by first ensuring that all the filler plugs and air
valves are clean and free from particles. Next the aircraft is jacked and then the air from the
chamber inside the cylinder is damped out once the air has been damped out a drip pan
should be placed under the gear to catch spillage of the fluid used in the struts. Next the filler
plug is removed at the top or side of the gear struts housing. The struts piston tube is raised
until it is fully compressed by pursing up on the tire. Fluid should be poured from a clean
container through the filler opening until it reaches the bottom of the filler plug hole. The
filler plug is then installed finger tight, and the struts extended and compressed two or three
times to remove air from the housing. The filler plug is then removed again and the strut
raised to full compression and filled with fluid if needed. The fill plug is then reinstalled and
tightened. After making certain that the oleo strut has been sufficiency filled with fluid,
remove the aircraft from the jacks. The oleo strut is then inflated until the correct distance is
exposed on the strut piston tube.

QUESTION 15. What is main purpose of shimmy damper?

The purpose of shimmy dampers is to reduce the tendency of the nose wheel to oscillate from
side to side.

QUESTION 16. What type of shimmy damper commonly used?

The most commonly used shimmy dampers are the piston type hydraulic cylinder shimmy
dampers.

QUESTION 17. What occurs during automatic damping action on shimmy damper?

When there is automatic damping action on a shimmy damper the piston hydraulic cylinder.
Will control the bleed of fluid between the two sides of the piston and it would restrict the
fluid flow to prevent rapid movement of the piston.

QUESTION 18. What actuate the doors/fairing on a mechanically actuated landing gear?

Sequence valves are normally used for actuating the doors/fairing on a mechanically actuated
landing gear.

QUESTION 19. How to trouble shoot toe-in / toe-out of landing gear?

Trouble shoot on toe in / toe out can be done on landing gear by placing a square against the
straight edge and check wheater its outstanding leg bears on the front and rear side of the
brake disk. If the square contacts the rear side of the disk, leaving a gap between it and the
front flange, the wheel is toed out. if a gap appears at the rear flange, the wheel is toed in.

QUESTION 20. Define toe-out landing gear?

Toe out can be defining as aircraft a wheel that tends to diverge towards the rear of the wheel.
Toe out will cause the tires to try to move apart. If the wheels are towed out it is known as
positive camber.

QUESTION 21. What means by landing gear positive chamber?

Landing gear positive camber can be defined as the amount of the wheels that are tilted from
the vertical of the wheels, and if it tilted outward the camber is positive.

QUESTION 22. What type of electrical motor used on retractable landing gear?

Reversible electric motor-driven pump.

QUESTION 23. What is purpose of sequence valve?

The purpose of the sequence valve is to drive the main gear inboard doors open and close.

QUESTION 24. What is the purpose of the emergency system for retractable landing gear?

The primary purpose of the emergency landing gear system is to release the lock-up and
move the gear to the down and lock position in case the main landing gear system fails.

QUESTION 25. How to lower landing gear if the main system fails?

Landing gears can be lowered by four methods if the main system fails and it can be either
by:

(a) Mechanically where the operation of a hand crank or retches perform the
extension part
(b) Alternate hydraulics which is powered by various method including a hand
pump, to extend the gear.
(c) Compress air which blows the gear down substituting air pressure for
hydraulic pressure.
(d) Free fall technique where the up locks are release allowing the gear to free
fall into the down-and-locked position.

QUESTION 26. What indicating sign on system for retractable landing gear on large
modern aircraft when locked up?

Once the landing gears fully locked up the indication sign will show no light on the landing
gear instrument panel.

QUESTION 27. Who can do the oleo servicing?

Oleo servicing can be done by an airframe technician.

QUESTION 28. What is purpose of orifice check valve on landing gear system?

The main purpose of the orifice check valve on a landing gear system is to allow unrestricted
hydraulic fluid flow in one direction and restricted flow in the opposite direction.

QUESTION 29. When does warning light/ horn activate?

The warning light/horn will be active if the engine throttles are brought to idle and when the
aircraft flies in a very low altitude the gears down.

QUESTION 30. How to determine type of fluid in the hydraulic system / shock strut?

Fluid in the hydraulic system / shock can be determined by referring to the manufactures
service manual.
