The lesson will begin by reading the book Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you

see? By Bill Martin Jr. and Eric Carle to the entire class during circle time on the
SmartBoard through YouTube. Discussions will occur during the reading. During
centers, the students will break into small groups in which one of the centers will
involve an activity on the SmartBoard where the students will sequence the story
in one activity and restructure the sentences in another activity. The next day,
they will use the activity board to place the correct animal/animal color under the
color word and place the onset letter describing the type of animal.

How will the learning environment be set up?

The lessons will be completed in groups of 5 students with a total of 25 students in
the class. One section of the lesson will be done as a whole group and the center
based activities (SmartBoard Lessons & Activity Board will be completed in small
groups of 5 students.
Instructional Procedures:

Day 1:

Circle Time (Whole Group)

To introduce this lesson, I will pull up YouTube on the SmartBoard and have the students
listen to the story being read.
I will ask them to pay close attention to order in which the story identifies the animals.
After the story has been read, we will discuss the colors that we saw throughout the book
and which animals were which colors.
Then, we will scroll back through the story to discuss each animal and which letter and
sound that animal word starts with.
These book discussions serve as the mini lesson or introduction to the topics that will be
taught at each center

Center Activity # 1 (Sequencing)

One of the centers of the day will involve the SmartBoard and groups of 5 students at a
time.
At the center will be the hard copy of the book Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you see?
for student and teacher reference if needed
During this lesson, I will talk about how when we read the story on YouTube, we noticed
that Brown Bear sees the animals in a particular order and I want help placing those
animals in the same order we read about them.
Students will then flip through the book and one at a time, select the animal that came
first, second, third, etc.
Day 2:
Center Activity # 2 (Sentence Structure)
Review the story and lesson from yesterday
Pull up the Smart Board sentence structure lesson and have the students do the premade
pages.
If needed, students can refer to the hard copy of the book to help them create the
sentences.
Use words such as first, next, second, last, etc. when guiding the students through the
sentences.

Day 3:
Center Activity # 3 (Letter, Letter-Sound and Color Recognition)
During center time on day 3, one of the centers will be the interactive activity board
I will introduce the activity board by telling my students that I need their help today
because Brown Bear cant see anything.
Then, I will tell the students that they are going to first put the correct color animal
underneath the color word. I will say the color word as I point to it and the student will
need to select the correct animal simply based on the color.
Next the student will practice with letter/sound recognition based on selecting the missing
initial letter for the animal word.
To do this, I will say the animal name such as dog. I will continue to provide guidance by
saying the letter sound such as /d/ and then ask the student what letter that sound
makes.
If the student cannot discover the correct letter by through the above hints, then tell them
the letter we are looking for and see if they then can identify it and place it on the activity
board.
Repeat this process for each animal and letter selection one student at a time.
The last three animals can be completed based on volunteers.
Repeat as time allows (10 minutes)

Extension
Below is a list an additional website that teachers letter recognition:

Differentiated Instructional Support:

More advanced students can do additional pages of the assignment, complete the activity board
on their own, read the book to the students out loud and use www.abcya.com to explore extra
practice with letters and letter sounds.

If a student is struggling to complete the activities, they can use the hard copy of the book as a
reference. If a student is having difficulty selecting the letter based on the letter sound, tell them
the letter and see if they can select that letter from the pile. If they still cannot, then show them
the letter in the environment and have them select the letter.

Vocabulary:
Review of sight word: What
Discuss use of punctuation: question mark (?)
