 The Senses of the Seer
Human beings are made in the image of God.
One of the distinctive aspects of humans is our
need to communicate. We are constantly finding
new ways to talk to each other, from the
telegraph to the telephone and radio, to faxes,
email, texting and instant messaging. Nowadays,
people get anxious if they are separated from
their cell-phones for any length of time. God likes
to talk or communicate too, and he not only
speaks through his written Word, the Bible, but
he speaks to the hearts and minds of his children
continually.

One of the ways he speaks is through his

prophets, and there may never have been a time
before this when the prophetic ministry was so
active. Peter quoted the Prophet Joel on the
morning of Pentecost, saying:

In the last days, God says, I will pour out my

Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters

will prophesy, your young men will see visions,

your old men will dream dreams. Even on my
servants, both men and women, I will pour out
my Spirit in those days, and they will
prophesy.
(Acts 2:17-18 & Joel 2:28-29)

Just as we have five physical senses of sight,

hearing, taste, smell and touch, so we have five
analogous spiritual senses. In the natural,
humans mainly communicate through sight and
sound, and so it makes sense that the two main
ways God communicates to his prophets are
through the spiritual senses of sight (the Seer)
and sound (the Nabi prophet). That is not to say
that God does not communicate through the
spiritual analogs of taste, smell and touch.

Who among us has not felt the presence of

God in especially powerful times of worship?

David tells us in Psalm 34:8:

Taste and see that the Lord is good.

Prophets in the Bible have described the

message they received as taste.

John says in Revelation 10:10-11:

I took the little scroll from the angels hand and
ate it. It tasted as sweet as honey in my mouth,
but when I had eaten it, my stomach turned
sour. Then I was told, You must prophesy
again

The spiritual analog of smell is given less

emphasis, just as it is in the natural. And yet,
those who have lost their sense of smell will tell
you how much they miss it.

Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 2:15,

We are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ
among those who are being saved and those who
are perishing.

So God can communicate to his children

through all five senses, and his message may not
come exclusively through the avenue of only one
sense at a time.

All Seers are Prophets, but not all Prophets

are Seers. Seers are those prophets whose main
avenue of reception from God is visual. They may
receive Gods message in the form of a mental
image, a vision or a dream. In this study we will
examine the function of the Seer, how the
prophetic gift operates in this mode of perception
and how to use this gift for the glory of God and
the edification of his people.
