Assignment 5: Memo and Board Meeting

This assignment is on the same topic as Assignment 6: Final Research Report. You can choose to work in
groups of maximum three people. If you choose to work in a group, you will collaborate on three
assignments: the memo and board meeting, the final research report and the final presentation.

The memo and board meeting assessment consists of a written, research, and oral component. Before
the meeting, please submit a memo on Blackboard outlining your topic. The ideas in the memo should
be adequately supported by research. In the board meeting, we will discuss your topic further. Be
prepared to answer questions about your topic.

Memo (5%)
Length: approximately 1 page, single-spaced
Format: memo format
Due date: Sunday, March 26, before midnight

Write a memo describing your topic for the final research report. For more details, read the assignment
description for the research report carefully.

The memo should contain the following:

1. A description of your topic and an explanation why you chose it.

2. A working problem statement.
3. Two sources for support cited using IEEE citation.
4. A proper sign off with your full name.

The memo should be written in professional and formal language and should be free of grammar errors.

Research (5%)
In order to establish credibility, you need to support your claims with research. I will be using the rubric
below to evaluate the research portion of this assignment. Please note: missing in-text citations in the
body of the text is considered plagiarism and results in a grade of 0% for the research portion of the
assignment.

Criteria Score
Two credible sources are cited in the memo and are integrated smoothly (2)
Sources are cited using IEEE citation (2)
One relevant visual (a chart, graph, or relevant picture) is presented during the board
meeting (1)
Board Meeting (5%)
Board meetings take place in small groups of five or six students. You (and your partner) will be
evaluated on your ability to present your topic briefly, your ability to answer questions, and your ability
to ask questions about the topics of the other board members.

In 1-2 minutes, explain what your topic focuses on. This is very short, so focus on the important things:
the topic, the scope, and the purpose. Although the presentation portion of the meeting is brief, you
need to demonstrate substantial knowledge of your topic. Make sure to have a solid understanding of
existing research, and be prepared to answer questions.

I will be using the rubric below to evaluate the board meeting portion of this assignment.

Criteria Score
Clear explanation of the topic
Demonstrated knowledge of the topic through research/ability to answer questions
Professionalism
Confidence and ability to lead the meeting
Participation: demonstrated interest in topics of group members and ability to ask
meaningful questions.
