ST. JOHNS, NL Skills Canada Newfoundland and Labrador has identified 44 students and
apprentices within the province that will compete on Team Newfoundland and Labrador 2017 at
the upcoming 23rd Annual Skills Canada National Competition. The largest skilled trade and
technology event in the country, the Skills Canada National Competition is scheduled to take place
from May 31 June 3, 2017 in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Close to 350 finalists from every region in Newfoundland and Labrador competed in 39 skilled
trade, technology and employability skill areas throughout the month of March and early April. The
majority of the Provincial Competitions were held on Friday, April 7 at College of the North Atlantic-
Prince Philip Drive Campus; however, heavy smoke from a nearby heritage building fire caused the
immediate evacuation and cancellation of the event. Skills Canada Newfoundland and Labrador has
worked closely with Provincial Technical Committees to identify Team Newfoundland and Labrador
2017.
It is so inspiring to see the level of excellence with which the young people of our province perform
in skilled trades and technologies, said Carole Ann Ryan, Executive Director of Skills Canada
Newfoundland and Labrador. In the past, Team Newfoundland and Labrador has had a strong
showing at the national level, coming home with several medals in a variety of fields. We are
always so proud of Team Newfoundland and Labrador and we are sure this year will be no
exception, added Ryan.
The competitive platform of the Skills Canada Provincial Competition presents a constructive and
celebratory venue which inspires students and apprentices to continue the tradition of excellence in
fields of skilled trades and technologies. Skills Canada Newfoundland and Labrador (a member of
Skills/Comptences Canada) was established in 1998 as part of an effort to maintain Canadas
international competitiveness amidst a declining Canadian labour force. Skills Canada
Newfoundland and Labrador receives funding from Employment and Social Development Canada,
the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, the Provincial Government and Vale.
