understanding of the mediums qualities.

Materials:

Water
Small cups
Fibrous drawing paper
Charcoal

Introduction:
I will start the class with a slideshow showing marks made be
different drawing mediums. The students will be spending this
class period experimenting with ways one can make marks on
paper using ink and brushes. Through a demo, I will show the
students what the tool looks like and some examples of mark
making.
- What could you do differently to change the shape or quality
of the mark?
- Would changes in pressure do this? For ink (or even charcoal)
how would adding water change it?
DRAWING MEDIUMS DAY 1 2

Show some preliminary work by Sandro Botticelli, Gentile and

Giovanni Bellini, and Albrecht Durer. These artists worked with
ink before starting final paintings. Using ink allowed them to play
with line variety and quality in areas they wanted to either
emphasize or not.

Body:
The students will be given two pieces of paper. For the majority
of the class, the students will practice making marks using ink
and brush on one of the sheets of paper. They will explore the
types of marks they leave and how they can manipulate them to
create variety. I will walk around and observe the students work
and will provide advice and demonstrations when we deem them
necessary. Once complete, they will show me for approval and I
will then direct them towards a mini drawing assignment using
the same medium, carried out on the second piece of paper. I will
do a demo of this also.
Draw a potted tree.
If some students finish before class ends, I will give them some
charcoal to start experimenting to prepare for the next class.

Closure:
I will collect the students drawings with their names on the
papers, and inform them of what they will be doing the next day:
working with charcoal.

Modifications/Accommodations/Differentiation:
Some students may require some extra supervision and motivation.

Sponge:
Individual charcoal exploration on drawing paper.
