Background of Gardenia Bakeries

Gardenia Bakeries (KL) Sdn Bhd (GBKL) is a food manufacturer in Malaysia owned
by QAF Ltd and Is also an associate company of Beras Nasional Berhad. The
Gardenia Company also operates a number of subordinate enterprises such as
Gardenia Singapore and the Gardenia Philippines. It offers various bakery
products, including loaves, buns, and toasts, and snack cake through
supermarkets, groceries, convenience, and variety stores.

History of Gardenia Bakeries

In 1969, an American named Horati Sye Slocumm, the founder of the company,
was sent by International Executive Service Corporation (IESC) to East Malaysia
to start a bakery business. Mr. Slocumm has brought together with his 35 years
of experience in the bakery experience with one of Americas leading chain of
bakeries, The Gardenia Bakeries is founded. In honour of Mr. Slocumms
contribution, Uncle Slocumms original recipe is still carried on the labels of
Gardenia bread today. Gardenias success began rather humbly. Gardenia
Bakeries (KL) Sdn Bhd rolled the first of loaf of bread which is the Original
Classic off its line in 1986. Within four short years, it became the bread market
leader with an astounding 99 percent brand recall rate and 80 percent top of
mind recall. Malaysias increasing demand for fresh ad nutritious bread
convinced Gardenia to invest in its own fully automated factory in 1991,
constructed with 6,000 loaves an hour capacity. In 1994, an additional state-of-
the-art plant, capable of producing 10,000 loaves an hour has commenced
operation to meet the rising demand for bread. Today, Gardenias five automated
factory is capable of producing 900,000 fresh loaves a day and making its the
largest bread producer in Southeast Asia.

Product of Gardenia Bakeries

Gardenias range of products grew and evolved through the years, becoming
better and better with each step. Leveraging on its brand strength and receive
tremendous response from Malaysians, Gardenia has achieves its phenomenal
growth and dominance through a unique style of bread-making. The traditional
sponge and dough method is used to make every single loaf of Gardenia bread.
This bread-making technique allows the dough to develop naturally, giving it the
exquisite taste, texture as well as flavour. Gardenias flagship bread, the Original
Classic, is soft and delicious sandwich bread which is the Malaysians favourite.
The flagship bread has improved over time with enrichment of vitamins and
minerals, four slices of Original Classic contain as much calcium as a glass of
milk. The pride of Gardenia, Gardenia Breakthru is the ground-breaking Low
Glycaemic index and Low Glycaemic Load bread, developed in collaboration with
a prominent dietician and a panel of researchers from local university. It has pre-
biotic properties, high protein and fibre content, with lower carbohydrate and
caloric attributes. Addition of Beta Glucan helps in reducing cholesterol.
Breakthru has even passed an extensive clinical protocol of Glycaemic index that
conduct in Washington DC and received a coveted seal of approval from
Glycaemic Research Institute (GRI) as a diet-friendly and diabetic-friendly food.
Today, Variation of Gardenias bread features Toastem, Delicia Butterscotch,
Delicia Choco Raisin and other snacks such as Twiggies, Delicia Cream Rolls,

there is one product which is not a bread but is a coconut jam called Auntie
Rosies Natural Pandan Kaya . This coconut jam is made from coconut milk, egg,
caramel, pandan leaf extract, food conditioner, salt and sugar. Pricing of
Gardenias product is fairly cheap with range from RM0.85 to RM4.45
