Ellipsoids of Uncertainty
l All measurements have some uncertainty
l EOU shows 3D uncertainty of the well path
l EOU have a high dependence of the method and the
survey tool used
l EOU distance: center to center distance minus the
sum of the ellipse semi major axes of the subject and
offset wells
Tool Error Models
l Mathematical models are defined for different tools
errors.
l It is needed to define the model before running
Anticollision Analysis
l Anadrill Standard is Wolff & DeWardt model.
Separation Factor
Ct to Ct distance .
Sum of semi-major axes
If separation factor < 1, the error ellipses overlap
General anticollision policies: 1.25
This clearance can be changed by:
l Additional safety factors
l Confidence level of EOU
Summary report
Critical survey in the subject well:
l MD & TVD at the closest EOU separation
l MD & TVD + EOU where an alert radii is crossed
Size of Alert radii
Alert status of the offset well:
l Flow: No risk associated with offset well
l Non Flow condition: Buffer, Minor, Major
Alert radii
Alert zones that determine severity of well proximity
Three zones possible:
l Drilling buffer: Ensure enough clearance from near
wells
l Minor risk: Warning zone
l Major risk: Dangerous situation - No drill condition
These zones are defined by a cone that increase radius
with depth

Summary of PowerPlan Anticollision
Tools
l Summary and detailed report: Provides criteria to
determine if neighbor wells are far enough to avoid
collision
l Traveling Cylinder: Shows graphically in a normal
plane all distances and depths that neighbor wells
are located
l Spider Plot: Shows a complete vision of the path
of subject and offset wells in an horizontal plane
RT Anticollision SmartAlarm
Traveling Cylinder computed continuously
l Smart Alarm: Warning for collision dangers
l RT: Project actual position of the bit. Plot only
trajectories below it.
User has to define:
l Plan and offset wells surveys
l Minimum acceptable distances to other wells
l Customized screen
Anticollision RT screen
Target parameters:
T/F to offset
DLS
Delta TVD
Normal Plane Displac.
Normal Plane Distance
Alarm radius
Red for min. distance
Yellow for double it.
Offset well

Square shows planned
position
Conclusions
Both PowerPlan Anticollision Reports provides
concrete criteria for determine Collision Risk
EOU considers the uncertainty originated in the
different surveying tools.
A separation factor of 1.25 can be used as an
anticollision criteria.
Alert radii determine different warnings to be taken in
account for collision risks.
Conclusions (Final)
Planning goal: To avoid collision warnings
Execution goal: To have enough separation with
other wells
IDEAL RT Anticollision SmartAlarm provides a
continuos monitoring of the separation with offset
wells
Any event related to Anticollision should be reported
during all phases (Planning, Execution, and
Evaluation)
