Gods Promises Are Conditional

At what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up,
and to pull down, and to destroy it; If that nation, against whom I have pronounced, turn
from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do unto them. And at what
instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant
it; If it do evil in my sight, that it obey not my voice, then I will repent of the good,
wherewith I said I would benefit them. Now therefore go to, speak to the men of Judah,
and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I frame evil
against you, and devise a device against you: return ye now every one from his evil way,
and make your ways and your doings good. And they said, There is no hope: but we will
walk after our own devices, and we will every one do the imagination of his evil heart.
(Jeremiah 18:7-12 KJV)

Thus says the LORD, who gives the sun for light by day and the fixed order of the moon
and the stars for light by night, who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar--the LORD of
hosts is his name: "If this fixed order departs from before me, says the LORD, then shall
the descendants of Israel cease from being a nation before me for ever." Thus says the
LORD: "If the heavens above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth below
can be explored, then I will cast off all the descendants of Israel for all that they have
done, says the LORD." (Jeremiah 31:35-37 RSV)
For thus saith the LORD; David shall never want a man to sit upon the throne of the
house of Israel; Neither shall the priests the Levites want a man before me to offer burnt
offerings, and to kindle meat offerings, and to do sacrifice continually. (Jeremiah 33:17-18
KJV)
The LORD swore to David a sure oath from which he will not turn back: "One of the sons
of your body I will set on your throne. If your sons keep my covenant and my testimonies
which I shall teach them, their sons also for ever shall sit upon your throne." (Psalms
132:11-12 RSV)

See Matthew 21:33-45 for application of the principles

stated above.

God is no respecter of persons, but in every generation they that fear the Lord and work
righteousness are accepted of Him, while those who are murmuring, unbelieving, and
rebellious will not have His favor nor the blessings promised to those who love the truth
and walk in it. Those who have the light and do not follow it, but disregard the
requirements of God, will find that their blessings will be changed into curses and their
mercies into judgments. God would have us learn humility and obedience as we read the
history of ancient Israel, who were His chosen and peculiar people, but who brought their
own destruction by following their own ways.
Ellen G. White, Testimonies for the Church, vol. 3, pp. 171, 172.

After the public rehearsal of the law, Moses completed the work of writing all the laws, the
statutes, and the judgments which God had given him, and all the regulations concerning the
sacrificial system. The book containing these was placed in charge of the proper officers, and
was for safe keeping deposited in the side of the ark. Still the great leader was filled with fear
that the people would depart from God. In a most sublime and thrilling address he set
before them the blessings that would be theirs on condition of obedience, and the curses
that would follow upon transgression. Ellen G. White, Patriarchs & Prophets, page 466. See
Deuteronomy chapters 27 and 28.
The angels of God in their messages to men represent time as very short. [See Romans 13:11,
12; 1 Corinthians 7:29; 1 Thessalonians 4:15, 17; Hebrews 10:25; James 5:8, 9; 1 Peter 4:7;
Revelation 22:6, 7.] Thus it has always been presented to me. It is true that time has continued
longer than we expected in the early days of this message. Our Saviour did not appear as soon
as we hoped. But has the Word of the Lord failed? Never! It should be remembered that the
promises and threatenings of God are alike conditional. [See Jeremiah 18:7-10; Jonah
3:4-10.] Ellen G. White, Last Day Events, page 38.

God's promises are conditional. In order to make it possible for Him to bless us, we must
do our part. We cannot expect that all His blessings will come to us naturally, if we fold our
hands in inactivity. We are to be laborers together with God. It is our privilege and duty to labor
for souls ready to perish.
If you have a knowledge of God and have taken your position under the banner of Prince
Emmanuel, remember that you are not to allow yourself to come under the control of the
powers of darkness -- the fallen angels. You are to keep in mind the promises that pertain to
eternal life and godliness, and seek for divine power that is given to enable you to escape
everything that would lead you astray. Ellen G. White, Sermons And Talks, volume 2,
page 195.

But what a contrast to this is the life of those who are earthly, sensual, devilish! The sensual
pleasure was indulged. In the light of the judgment, the man appears as he is, stripped of the
livery of heaven. He stands before others as he is in the sight of a holy God. Let every one of
us think seriously whether the works following us will be the mellow light of heaven or the
shadows of darkness, and whether the legacies we bequeath are those of blessings or
curses. Ellen G. White, Testimonies to Ministers, page 429.
