INTRODUZIONE
Grammatica

SUBJECT CASE I work / he loves / they are singing (subject)
forma del caso soggetto: hes older than I / me it is I / me it is I who teaches
the cat is under the table: it is watching the spider
its six oclock its 150 kms to Agrigento its raining it is cold today
it is easy to criticise
IT viene utilizzato come soggetto per verbi impersonali: it seems it looks
(soggetto e oggetto coincidono): I hurt myself John shaved himself
alla seconda persona plurale: You, John and I mustnt deceive ourselves!
You and John mustnt deceive yourselves!
I riflessivi vengono usati similmente dopo il verbo + la preposizione:
he spoke to himself look after yourself!
I spoke to the teacher himself
Joan herself told me = Joan told me herself

POSSESSIVE PRONOUNS
Toms father is his father Marys father is her father
a boy loves his mother a girl loves her mother
this is my pen = this is mine
these are my pens = these are mine
that is your book = that is yours
these are your books = these are yours
Lespressione OF MINE ecc. significa ONE OF MY ecc.: a friend of mine = one of my friends
an eagle is a bird one eagle is a bird (unaquila un uccello) (e le altre, cosa sono?)
a strong coffee is no good (un caff forte non buono) (fa male alla salute)
one strong coffee is no good ( ) (necessitano pi di una tazzina)
(THE) ONE viene usato come contrasto a THE OTHER nella costruzione correlativa:
one went this way, the other that way (uno and di qua e laltro di l)
ECCEZIONI: 1. ONE utilizzato con ANOTHER / OTHERS:
one (boy) wanted to read, another/others wanted to play
B) ONE DAY pu essere utilizzato per indicare un futuro ipotetico: one day youll be rich!
one day a telegram arrived one night there was a terrible storm
C) ONE SOSTITUTIVO Viene utilizzato come sostituto anaforico per sostantivi numerabili,
Give me that pen This one? / Is this the one you mean?
Id like a drink, but a small one Didnt you prefer large ones?
one has to be patient you have to be patient.

condizioni particolari come certezza, potere, dovere, volere, possibilit.

infinitive: TO WORK (base form: WORK)
ATTENZIONE:
verbo.

DRINK, WRITE, WORK, ecc.) o processi (IMPROVE, GROW, WIDEN, , ecc.).
progressivo indicano ripetizione:
he kicked (un movimento della gamba) he was kicking (movimenti ripetuti della gamba)
indicano SEMBRARE);
DOUBT, FORGET, HATE, HOPE, IMAGINE, KNOW, LIKE, LOVE, MEAN, PREFER, REMEMBER,
SUPPOSE, UNDERSTAND, WANT, ecc. (anche i verbi SEEM e APPEAR);

TO BE ESSERE
Per esprimere possesso (AVERE) vengono utilizzati due verbi nella lingua inglese: TO HAVE e TO HAVE GOT.
formale, invece, preferiscono luso di TO HAVE.
TO HAVE

Esempio: Jack has a beautiful house.
Jack has got a beautiful house.
Esempio: I usually have breakfast at 8 o'clock.

DETERMINERS
modi: rendendo il sostantivo definito (the boy), indefinito (a boy) o indicando la quantit (many boys).
sostantivi possono stare assieme.
sostantivi numerabili singolari (bottle - bottiglia), i sostantivi numerabili plurali (bottles bottiglie) e i

I predeterminativi all, both, half vanno davanti agli articoli, ai possessivi o ai dimostrativi. Essendo
each, some, any, no, enough.
c) Gli ordinali generali (next, last, other, further, etc.) possono o precedere o seguire i numeri
ordinali.
d) Quantifiers many molti/e much molto/a
few pochi/e little poco/a
a few un po a little un po
fewer meno
several parecchi/e

Some more tea, please.
Questi possono seguire altri post determinativi: We need two more chairs.

he pushed the door open (risultato del processo: la porta era aperta)
BE, SEEM, FEEL ecc.: I feel awful today
COMPARAZIONE
ci sono tre gradi comparativi
NORMALE dark red useful
COMPARATIVO darker redder more useful
SUPERLATIVO the darkest the reddest the most useful
young younger the youngest old older the oldest
gli aggettivi con pi di due sillabe (da tre in poi) formano il loro comparativo e superlativo anteponendo MORE e THE MOST alla
forma normale: interesting more interesting the most interesting
MORE e THE MOST: careful more careful the most careful
quelli terminanti in -ER, -Y or -LY, normalmente aggiungono -ER, -EST:
pretty prettier the prettiest Da notare che -Y diventa -I
heavy heavier the heaviest (quando segue una consonante)

good better the best (buono) far further the furthest (lontano) di distanza e tempo
bad worse the worst (cattivo) far farther the farthest (lontano) di persone e cose
little less the least (meno) old older the oldest (vecchio) di et
much more the most (molto) old elder the eldest (anziano) di anzianit
many more the most (molti)
COMPARATIVO
Jill is shorter than Jack (Jill pi bassa di Jack); bassi di statura.
Jill is less tall than Jack (Jill meno alta di Jack); Da notare che con LESS (meno)
Jack is less short than Jill (Jack meno basso di Jill). Jill laggettivo rimane al suo grado normale.
UGUAGLIANZA
AS invece di
MORE... THAN: Jack is as tall as Jill (Jack alto tanto quanto Jill) Jill is as tall as Jack
Per negare luguaglianza: NOT AS... AS, o NOT SO... AS:
Jack is not as tall as Jill (Jack non cos alto come Jill)
Jack is not so short as Jill (Jack non cos basso come Jill)
COMPARATIVO e SUPERLATIVO
Se paragoniamo soltanto due cose, si utilizza la forma comparativa: Jack is the taller of the two children
Jill is the shorter of the two children (Jill la pi bassa dei due ragazzi)
Susan is the tallest of the three (Susan la pi alta dei tre) Jill is the shortest of the three
Enna is the smallest of the Sicilian Provinces (Enna la pi piccola delle province siciliane)
singolare: Susan is the oldest girl in the class (Susan la ragazza pi alta della classe)
my best friend the worlds highest mountain
the greatest living composer the most enjoyable book (that) Ive read
AND (-ER and ER; MORE and MORE SEMPRE PI):
Jill is getting taller and taller English is getting more and more interesting
(Jill sta diventanto sempre pi alta) (linglese sta diventando sempre pi interessante)
THE + comparativo:
Do you want a big house? - Yes, the bigger the better!
(Vuoi un casa grande? - S, pi grande , meglio !)
a farm for beauty = a beauty farm a leg of the chair = a chair leg
a supply of money = money supply the manager of finance = the finance manager

2a. ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
2b i. /////////////////////
Confrontare: Peter lived in Palermo for ten years Il periodo di residenza terminato / Peter morto
Peter has lived in Palermo for ten years Il periodo di residenza si estende fino al presente o
Confrontare pure: For years, Fiat has produced competitive cars.
For years, Fiat produced competitive cars.
quando si chiede il tempo dellazione: when did you meet him?
menzionato: the bus was ten minutes late
where have you been? Ive been to the concert. Did you enjoy it?
work worked play played talk talked listen listened
I worked, you worked, he worked ecc.
La forma negativa dei verbi regolari e irregolari si forma con DID NOT e la forma base del verbo (linfinito senza il TO):
I did not work
did I work? did he work? ecc.
DID NOT normalmente contratto nella forma negativa e interrogativa negativa:
I didnt work didnt I work? ecc.
AFFIRMATIVE NEGATIVE INTERROGATIVE NEGATIVE INTERROGATIVE
I worked I did not work did I work? did I not work?
he worked he did not work did he work? did he not work?
\ I didnt work \ didnt I work?
NOTE ORTOGRAFICHE (VERBI REGOLARI):
stop stopped travel travelled
carry carried
I VERBI IRREGOLARI
INFINITIVE TO SPEAK TO SEND TO SEE TO EAT TO DO TO GO
SIMPLE PAST spoke sent saw ate did went
il SIMPLE PAST TENSE del verbo TO SEND SENT per tutte le persone;
la forma negativa DID NOT SEND per tutte le persone;
la forma interrogativa DID I SEND? ecc.;
la forma interrogativa - negativa DID I NOT SEND? / DIDNT I SEND? ecc.

worked loved stopped travelled carried;
nei verbi irregolari, i participi passati variano secondo il verbo specifico ( VEDERE APPENDICE IRREGOLAR VERBS):
spoken sent seen eaten done gone;
lausiliare / loperatore.
usato con un periodo di tempo: Ive been here for one hour / six days / a year;
utilizzato con il SIMPLE PAST TENSE indica un I was here for one hour (Im not here now);
FOR:
utilizzato con il PRESENT PERFECT indica un Ive been here for one hour (Im still here);
qualche volta pu essere omesso: Ive been here an hour.
usato con un punto nel tempo e significa da Ive been here since three oclock / Saturday / 1995 / I was born;
quel punto sino a quando si parla.
SINCE:

She was smiling but in her eyes there was sadness...
a) He said: Im living in London He said he was living in London
b) He was busy packing, for he was leaving that night
c) He was always ringing me up (fastidiosa azione ripetuta)
PROGRESSIVE ASPECT
Attenzione:
I was writing with a special pen last night but my hand grew tired.
PAST): While I was writing, the phone rang

TUTORIAL 9
THE FUTURE
presente semplice e progressivo.
THE FUTURE
PRESENT PROGRESSIVE
presente. hes leaving for Easter (partir per Pasqua)
they are studying now (stanno studiando adesso) presente
they are studying later (studieranno pi tardi) futuro
[arrivare], LEAVE [partire], START [partire]); i verbi che denotano posizione (STAY [stare], REMAIN [rimanere]) e i verbi DO e
mio viaggio.
Questo modo di esprimere il futuro non pu essere utilizzato con i verbi che normalmente non accettano la forma progressiva;
I am meeting him tonight (lo incontrer, ci incontriamo stasera)
Im going to leave tomorrow with John (potrei cambiare idea / John non sa nulla)
La forma BE GOING TO + FORMA BASE implica sempre una intenzione premeditata e spesso unintenzione + una
pianificazione.
necessariamente, senza premeditazione.
Se sono stati effettuati preparativi per lazione, dobbiamo utilizzare la forma BE GOING TO:
Ive bought the ingredients, Im going to cook. (ho comprato gli ingredienti, quindi cuciner)
Se lintenzione palesemente senza premeditazione, dobbiamo utilizzare SHALL / WILL:
are you hungry? I shall cook something for you. (hai fame? Ti cucino /cuciner qualcosa)
La forma BE GOING TO pu essere usata senza unespressione di tempo:
Im going to show you my collection of butterflies (ti mostrer la mia collezione di farfalle)

THE INFINITIVE
qualit), di solito un participio presente: Pasquale is studying; I have a boring teacher.

PLACE PREPOSITIONS
1 2 3 4 5
DIRECTION PREPOSITIONS
UP, DOWN, ALONG e ACROSS / OVER rappresentano movimento con riferimento a una direzione o asse.
ACROSS
Ma UP and DOWN sono
usate anche in senso
UP DOWN idiomatico riferendosi ad
unasse orizzontale per
ALONG esprimere la nozione di
ALONG.
VERTICAL AXIS HORIZONTAL AXIS
(A)ROUND: il percorso direzionale un angolo o una curva;
up and down in and out round and round on and off
POSITION PREPOSITIONS
1. Duration of time: We walked for two hours. 1. Accompanying: He came with her; I have my keys with me.
2. Distance: I walked for five kilometers. 2. Having; containing: Here is a book with a map of the island.
3. Purpose: I bought this jacket for you. 3. By means of; using: I repaired the shoes with glue.
4. In the direction of: She left for New York. 4. Manner: with pleasure; with ease; with difficulty
5. In favor of: We are for the proposal. 5. Because of: We were paralyzed with fear.
6. Considering: The boy is clever for his age.
LIKE COME OF DI
1. Resembling: That looks like him. 1. Location: east of here; the middle of the road
2. Appearing possible: It looks like rain. 2. Possession: a friend of mine; the sound of music
3. Be in a suitable mood for: I feel like going swimming. 3. Part of a group: one of us; a member of the team
4. Measurement: a cup of milk; two meters of snow
MORE ON PREPOSITIONS
across, after, at, before, by, during, from, in, into, of, on, to, under, with, without
determinativo + aggettivi:
after the storm
on white horses
under the old regime
stranded" prepositions (preposizioni abbandonati / piantati in asso)
COMPLEX PREPOSITIONS
SEMI-AUXILIARIES (semi ausiliari). Tra questi abbiamo:
To have to To seem to To be about to To be likely to
To mean to To tend to To be going to To be supposed to
The film is about to start (il film sta per iniziare)
I'm going to learn to play the piano ([ho intenzione di] imparer a suonare il pianoforte)
I have to leave early today (devo andare via prima oggi)
You are supposed to sign both forms ([ci si aspetta che] dovresti firmare entrambi i moduli)
I tend to smoke too much (ho la tendenza a fumare troppo)
The lesson is likely to finish late (la lezione [ probabile che] probabilmente finir tardi)

particolari come certezza, potere, dovere, volere, possibilit ecc.

Note:
perfect, futuro con shall/will, ecc) si utilizza to be able to:
I can play the piano = I am able to play the piano I have been able to play the piano
I could play the piano = I was able to play the piano I will be able to play the piano

THE PASSIVE VOICE
USO
My watch was stolen (Lorologio mi stato rubato)
FORMAZIONE
1) Sostituire la frase verbale attiva con la corrispondente frase verbale passiva;
2) Trasformare loggetto della proposizione attiva in soggetto della proposizione passiva;
SOGGETTO VERBO ATTIVO OGGETTO
the students passed the exam
BY
introduce
lagente
the exam was passed by the students

the students have studied their English homework regularly
NP VP NP AP
verbi intransitivi, senza alcuna parte costituente che segue, come in SV sopra;
verbi copulativi, seguiti da un SC o AC, come negli schemi SVC e SVA sopra;
In una proposizione inglese possiamo avere, pertanto, un solo soggetto e un solo verbo, se il verbo intransitivo;
Since the beginning of the course the students have always studied hard their English homework
at home regularly in the evenings
Le frasi avverbiali (A) si dividono in:
1) frasi avverbiali di modo/maniera (hard; regularly)
2) frasi avverbiali di tempo (since the beginning of the course; always; in the evenings)
3) frasi avverbiali di luogo (at home)

IL SOGGETTO
Il soggetto pu essere
a) un nome: John
b) un pronome (caso soggetto): he
c) una frase nominale: the tall man
d) una proposizione (semplice o complessa): the students who come to the university lectures.
IL VERBO
Il verbo pu essere
a) un verbo semplice: is
b) un verbo composto: has been
c) una frase verbale: can sing / is able to sing
LOGGETTO
lazione indirettamente. Loggetto pu essere:
a) un nome: John
b) un pronome (caso oggetto): him
c) una frase nominale: the tall man
d) una proposizione: that he needed to study
c) occasionalmente, una proposizione: that he is reading
COORDINAZIONE E SUBORDINAZIONE
Both X and Y (sia X che Y) / Either X or Y (o X o Y) / ecc.
Both Europe and America realise the need for world cooperation.
Either the electricity has gone or theres a short circuit.
His doctor allows him neither to drink nor to smoke.
Shes not only an excellent student, but (also) a first class cook.
allaltra dipendente. Per esempio, nella frase:
The students have studied their English homework regularly because they understand the importance of English
abbiamo la principale, The students have studied their English homework regularly, e poi la subordinata, segnalata da un indicatore di
subordinazione (because), they understand the importance of English.
Because they understand the importance of English , the students have studied their English homework regularly )
soggetto That he studied is obvious;
oggetto diretto I know that shes clever;
oggetto indiretto I gave whoever it was his homework back;
complemento del soggetto The point is that theyre studying;
complemento delloggetto I cant imagine Pasquale unable to pass the exam;
avverbiale When we meet again, I shall explain relative clauses.
After - dopo Since - (1. from a past time) da / Inoltre, le seguenti frasi sono spesso
Although or though - sebbene (2. as, because) siccome utilizzate allinizio di proposizioni
As - (1. because) in quanto / (2. when) mentre So / so that - cos Than - rispetto a / di quanto subordinate:
Before - prima Unless - se non ... As soon as - appena / subito dopo
Because - perch Until or till - fino a / sino a As well as - cos come / oltre a
For - in quanto / perch When - quando As though - come se / in modo simile
If - se Whether ... (or... ) - se ... (o non ...) Even if - anche se
Providing or provided - a condizione che While / Whilst - (1. at the time when) mentre / In case - in caso che
Rather than piuttosto che 2. on the other hand) mentre (dallaltro canto)
Certe parole, come after, before, since e until possono funzionare o come le preposizioni o come le congiunzioni di subordinazione.
Significato Preposizione Congiunzione
for this reason (per questa ragione) because of because
in spite of this (nonostante questo) despite / in spite of although
at the time when (nel tempo quando) during while
in a similar way (in modo simile) like as if
Preposition: They were upset because of the delay. Conjunction: They were upset because they were delayed.
: Despite the rain, we enjoyed ourselves / : Although it rained, we enjoyed ourselves
: In spite of the rain, we enjoyed ourselves.
: We stayed indoors during the storm. : We stayed indoors while the storm raged.
: It looks like rain.: : It looks as if it will rain.

ADVERBS OF MANNER
Alcuni avverbi ci indicano com o come dovrebbe essere considerata lazione. ADJECTIVE ADVERB
Esempio: lucky luckily
The little girl ran quickly.
(to run- correrre). weak weakly
(HERE- qui, THERE- l/l, NEAR- vicino, BEHIND-dietro, ABOVE- sopra ecc.)
She looked everywhere. She left her keys here.
She looked well there.
SOMEWHERE (da qualche parte) and ANYWHERE (ovunque) sono usati nello stesso modo
dei partitivi SOME e ANY:
I saw your keys somewhere. (Affirmative)
Did you see my keys anywhere? (Interrogative)
I didnt see your keys anywhere. (Negative)
Where are you going? Nowhere (in particular).
ADVERBS OF TIME
1) AFTERWARDS, EVENTUALLY, LATELY, RECENTLY, NOW, SOON, THEN, TODAY, TOMORROW,

pi usuale: He is coming tomorrow. Yesterday it rained. Then we went home.
LATE and IMMEDIATELY vanno posti alla fine della poposizione:
He came late. Ill go immediately.
allinizio della proposizione: Immediately the rain stops, well go home.
YET and STILL, come avverbi di tempo hanno delle regole di posizione diverse:
YET va posto alla fine della proposizione.
STILL va posto prima del verbo ma dopo il verbo TO BE:
He hasnt finished yet. (He hasnt yet finished.)
He still hasnt finished. He is still teaching.
The lesson hasnt finished yet.
STILL indica che lazione continua ancora: He is still giving the lesson.
The teacher has just finished the lesson.

PRESENT PERFECT SIMPLE
Esempi: Ive completed my English and economics homework, but I havent started my maths yet.
Shes travelled to many countries, but shes never been outside Europe.
Have you ever tried Japanese food?' 'No, never. Whats it like?
ATTENZIONE: il PRESENT PERFECT spesso utilizzato con avverbi come: ever, never, already, just, still, yet
The invoice has just arrived [la fattura appena arrivata cio, adesso qui]
Have you [ever] been to England? [sei (mai) stato/a in Inghilterra?]
just (= appena / proprio adesso)
They have just left [sono appena usciti / sono andati via proprio adesso]
already (= gi) va usato alla forma affermativa:
They have already left [sono gi andati via]
yet (= ancora / gi) va usato alla forma interrogativa e negativa:
They havent left yet [non sono ancora andati via]
Have you eaten yet? No, I havent eaten yet [Hai gi mangiato? No, non ho ancora mangiato]
How long have you been waiting for this bus?' 'Ive been standing here for over half an hour.
These buses never come.
Ive been looking for a summer holiday job for two weeks now, but I still havent found one.
Weve been living here in Palermo since 2002.
Present Perfect Continuous Vs Present Perfect

Ive been reading this book all afternoon (non ho ancora finito di leggerlo)
Who has eaten my chocolates? There are none left.
Who has been eating my chocolates? There are only a few left.
FORMAZIONE: Il PRESENT PERFECT PROGRESSIVE si forma con il PRESENT TENSE del verbo TO HAVE + il
participio passato del verbo TO BE (BEEN) + VERBO + ING: I have been working

Esempi:
Past Perfect When I got to the cinema, the film had already started.
The book we ordered still hadnt arrived when I phoned yesterday.
Past Perfect Progressive It had been raining and the roads were all wet.
In 2004, they had been living in Palermo for fours years and knew the city well.

THE CONDITIONAL
IL CONDIZIONALE PRESENTE
formato con SHOULD / WOULD + INFINITO (senza TO) per la prima persona e WOULD + INFINITO (senza TO) per tutte
le altre persone.
AFFERMATIVA I should / would work (Id work)
you would work youd work
he would work hed work

ecc.
Questa forma viene utilizzata:
A. Nelle frasi condizionali;
B. In usi speciali di SHOULD e WOULD;
I hope (that) I shall / will succeed I hoped (that) I should / would succeed
(SHALL / WILL, quindi, in discorso diretto diventa SHOULD / WOULD in discorso indiretto quando il verbo che introduce
al tempo passato.)
IL CONDIZIONALE PERFETTIVO
Questo si forma con SHOULD / WOULD + LINFINITO PERFETTIVO (senza TO):
AFFERMATIVA I should / would have worked
you would have worked
he would have worked
ecc.
NEGATIVA I should not / would not have worked
(I shouldnt / wouldnt have worked)

B. In usi speciali di SHOULD e WOULD;
C. Come un equivalente passato del FUTURO PERFETTIVO:
I hope she will have finished before we get back I hoped she would have finished before we got back.
APPUNTI DI GRAMMATICA - CENTRO LINGUISTICO DI ATENEO - ANGELO BACCARELLA
64
frase: If it rains, I shall stay at home, if it rains la IF-CLAUSE, e I shall stay at home la MAIN CLAUSE.
If I were you, I would study more (ma io non sono te).
If I had a horse, I would go riding every day (ma io non ho un cavallo).
If I dyed my hair blue, everyone would laugh at me (ma non ho intenzione di tingerli).
passato: If anyone interrupted him, he got angry (notare il significato passato).
B. VARIAZIONI DELLA IF-CLAUSE: invece di IF + SIMPLE PAST possiamo avere:
1. IF + PAST PROGRESSIVE:
If my car was working, I would / could drive you to the station.
2. IF + PAST PERFECT:
If she had taken my advice, she would be happier now.
Di solito questi modali sono utilizzati dopo IF nelle frasi condizionali. Ci sono, comunque, delle eccezioni:
A. IF YOU WILL / WOULD spesso utilizzato nelle richieste cortesi. WOULD la forma pi cortese:
If you will/would wait a moment Ill see if the sales manager is free.
I would be very grateful if you would make the arrangements for the delivery of the goods.
IF YOU WILL / WOULD + INFINITO spesso utilizzato da solo quando la richiesta si fa perch pretesa dalle
circostanze.
If you would fill up this form.
If youd put your address on the back of the cheque (in a shop).
If youd open your books (in a classroom).
B. IF + WILL / SHOULD pu essere utilizzato con tutte le persone per indicare volont:
If hell come to my tutoring, Ill be able to help him
WONT usato in questo modo indica rifiuto:
If he wont come, I cant help him
If you will stay up late, no wonder you sleep during the lesson (WILL non va contratto).
D. IF + WOULD LIKE / CARE pu essere utilizzato invece di IF + WANT / WISH ed pi cortese:
