Who Dun It?

Prior Knowledge Must have some knowledge on how to write a claim about a
thesis

Lesson Objectives SWBAT define claim, evidence, and warrant.


SWBAT use claim, evidence, and warrant correctly.
SWBAT connect their evidence to their reasoning for their
claim through a warrant
SWBAT justify their claim by giving reasons to why they chose
the claim they did.

Materials Needed Youtube video, worksheet, powerpoint demonstration

Standards - Cite the textual evidence that most strongly


supports an analysis of what the text says explicitly as
well as inferences drawn from the text.
- Write arguments to support claims in an analysis
of substantive topics or texts, using valid reasoning and
relevant and sufficient evidence.

Time Learning Task Methods or Procedures

5-10 min Journal & discussion Prompt: Why are arguments


important?
- Discuss MLK and the
Civil Rights movement.
- Remind students that at
the end of this Malala unit they
will be writing an argumentative
paper.

25 min Power point and viewing of video In students note section of their
clip composition book have them divide the
page into 3 sections. [claims evidence
warrant]
- Go over a quick review of what each
word means with powerpoint
- Watch video clip once through where
no one writes anything down. Watch
again and let students take notes on
claims they see.
- Have students write down ideas that
they think fall into each category based
on the movie clip
- Go over as a full group after the
movie is complete

5-10 Extended practice Go through the additional examples


Assessment: thumbs up and 1-4.
