Title : Space And Environment Carrying Capacities Of Jambi Citys Slum Area

(Case Study: River Banks Slum Area)

The research of Space and Environment Carrying Capacities of Jambi Citys Slum Area, Case
Study : River Banks Slum Area covers the slum area of Danau Sipin Sub-District, Danau Teluk
Sub-District and Pelayangan Sub-District in line with The Mayors Decree No. 166 of 2016,
regarding the establishment of the location of slum housing and settlement in Jambi City, and
Area Layout Plan of Jambi City from 2013 to 2033. The aim of this research is (1) to identify the
slum area at the river bank in Jambi City by analyzing the causative factors of the slum, (2) to
determine the slum levels based on the slum criteria with a value system for each criteria, (3) to
determine the capacity level of environment to provide settlement as the capacity of certain area
in providing the settlement area in order to accommodate certain number of population to have a
decent settlement. The method applied is a survey method by taking samples with purposive
way, in which the number of samples is 44 respondents in each sub-district as slum area. The
determination of the number of the samples applies Slovin method with descriptive data
tabulation. The results of the research show that the causative factors of the slum consist of some
variables i.e. layout compatibility, land ownership status, location position, population,
houses/buildings, infrastructure, utility, social tensions, RTH, and potential disaster. The level of
the slum of the research are fall into moderate and mild. The capacity of the environment to the
settlement of the slum is relatively high or it has an average DDP > 1 meaning it has the capacity
to accommodate the population to settle (building a house) in that area.
