Rationale Statement Standard #9
Statement of Standard 9:
The teacher engages in ongoing individual and collaborative professional learning
designed to impact practice in ways that lead to improved learning for each student, using
evidence of student achievement, action research and best practice to expand a repertoire of
skills, strategies, materials, assessments and ideas to increase student learning (Professional
Development in New Jersey, 2014, pg. 12).
Name of Artifact: Blog Posts
Date of Artifact: April 5, 2017
Course: Education Field Experience EDUC 230-01
Rationale Statement:
For artifact 9 I had to create a blog on my education portfolio that has a minimum of four
posts. For my Education Field Experience class I had to do 30 hours of field experience at a
school. The blog captures observations I made during my time in the school and reflections once
I was done. The first post captured my first day, the second post captured my overall experience,
the third post captured my opinions of technology use in the classroom, and the fourth post was
based on two students I had observed in the classroom. During my time in the classroom for my
field experience I had written down observations for each day I was there. The notes were then
used to create the different blog posts. This artifact relates to the performances section 9.i.4
which states the teacher actively seeks professional, community, and technological resources,
within and outside the school, as supports for analysis, reflection, and problem-solving
(Professional Development in New Jersey, 2014, pg. 12). The blog posts themselves show that I
am using outside technology sources for reflection and analysis. As mentioned, the posts are
based off of the notes I had written while observing the classroom which also shows the aspect of
using resources within the classroom. The teacher himself was also an excellent resource which
focuses on the community and professional aspect. Interacting with the students and seeing how
they interact was also great for the community part and also for reflection and problem solving.
Sitting in and observing a class is one thing, but taking the time to reflect, even after each
day, really shows what it is like to be a teacher. I learned a lot from the teacher and his students.
This class especially showed how different each student learned. They are all smart kids, but
some did not care for work, others could not do the work, and a few genuinely liked being in
class. Not a single one learned exactly the same way and seeing the teacher explain the same
topic in different ways for each student to understand is a great learning experience. When I am a
teacher there are going to be times I will have to answer the same question, or explain a subject a
different way so all of my students grasp the concept.
This experience is something I will always take with me in the future. Sitting down and
reflecting on a class or something that happened is something that I am always going to have to
do as a teacher. What is nice about technology being so advanced is that there are many ways for
me to actually sit down and reflect, like writing a blog for example. Being a teacher is constantly
a learning experience and I am never going to stop learning. The more experience I gain as a
teacher the more I will learn, which means I will be able to teach my students better and they will
learn more.
