"Dream Children is a short story written by Gail Godwin. The title of this story is from
her 1976 collection. She worked as journalist for the Miami Herald, as a travel consultant with
the United State Embassy in London; she is also an English instructor at the University of Iowa,
Vassar College and Columbian University. She is also an essayist, writer of short story and
novel, and she has written librettos for four musical compositions Starrer. Gails recounts a
young woman is attempts to find happiness after she has been victimized by a terrible, freakish
mistake.

Elements of the Story:

Character:

As a reader of the short story Dream Children the personality that Mrs McNair shown
was static because after the things was happened to her she did not getting mad and the young
woman kept her sanity even she find that her baby was dead and her husband lied to her. To
Mar. McNair his personality was also static because in the beginning of the problem he did not
told to his wife that their baby was dead. I know that he did not want to see his wife pained. But
it is not the solution to resolve their problem because there has a possibility that some people told
to her that their baby was dead like the nurse did. She feels more pained because the person who
is the most she trusted is the person she never expects who lied to her. It is not only the time that
he lied to her wife because in the midst of the story his husband lied again. He did not tell to her
about the baby that she held in her arms last 2 years ago was inside the house. And the other one
he did not end the contract to the Victoria Darrow and this is the things that their life was become
more complicated. And Victoria Darrow personality was a dynamic in the beginning of the story
she asked many question to Mrs McNair about their past but later on Victoria Darrow stop to
questioned Mrs.McNair and she gave an advice.

Settings:

In the story there has no exactly placed and when the story happened but the authors
describe what house and place are had. Their house was built seventy years before the new side
which was complete in 1973. It was a place that nobody has seen, nobody was here, old
fashioned, and unspoiled village. In my mind this is a place was not easy to find and that is a
hidden place.
Plot:

Dream Children, plot was juxtapose because in the beginning and the ending was the
same. The beginning of the story is when the young woman was in her car and in her side is Blue
Boy and he wave the bottled-green car to Mrs Frye. Also the ended was that part. The conflict of
this the protagonist is man versus man because her husband, as I told lately he did not told to
her wife their baby was dead and man versus fate because it is not accidentally it is God's plan
why her baby was born dead that her baby was born dead and she has no power to change it. The
rising action is not heavy because Victoria Darrow only asked some question about in her past
but off course it is not easy to answer especially it is talks about your past and that past hurt you
so much. The climax the story was a serious thing because it is all about in her baby. The falling
action in the story was did not expecting only dog named Big Boy is the one who comfort her all
the past years.

My first impression to the story was boring and not interesting but when I read the story
again there has many suspense but there has some part in the story that I cannot breathe because I
am feel what the young woman feel. I cried when I read the part that young woman saw the boy
and the boy was watching her and had no fear and the only things that she did is she knelt and
her tear was streaming in her checks. And when the nurse gave her baby and she feed her. To
conclude this story, this short story is very relatable especially in the mother who lost her child
like Mrs McNair experienced. The impact of this story to me is whatever thats happened in our
lives, we need to accept and try to move on because we cannot go back to the past. The story that
I read is surely helpful to everyone.
