Rack Installation overview

This chapter provides instructions for installation of the chassis in a rack. Follow these steps in stated order,
in order to install a system in the shortest time.

Prepare for the unit for Setup

The box, which your chassis was shipped in, should include four mounting screws. You need
those for rack installation. Read this section completely before you begin the installation

procedure outlined in the following sections.

Choose a Setup Location

Leave enough clearance in front of the rack to enable you to open the
front door completely 610 mm (~25 inches).
Leave approximately 760 mm (30 inches) of clearance in the back of the rack to allow
for sufficient airflow and ease in servicing.

This product is for installation only in a Restricted Access Location (dedicated equipment
rooms, service closets and similar environments)

Rack Precautions
Ensure that the leveling jacks on the bottom of the rack are fully extended to the floor
with the full weight of the rack resting on them
In single rack installation, stabilizers should be attached to the rack
In multiple rack installations, the racks should be coupled together
Always make sure the rack is stable before extending a component from the rack
You should extend only one component at a time. Extending two or more
simultaneously may cause the rack to become unstable

Server Precautions
Review the electrical and general safety precautions delivered with the components
you are adding to your chassis
Determine the placement of each component in the rack
Install the heaviest server components at the bottom of the rack first and proceed
upwards.
Always keep the rack's front door, all panels and all components on the servers closed
when not servicing, in order to maintain proper cooling
If installed in a closed or multi-unit rack assembly, the ambient operating temperature
of the rack environment may be greater than the ambient temperature of the room.
Therefore, consideration should be given to installing the equipment in an
environment compatible with the manufacturers maximum rated ambient
temperature (TMRA).
Equipment should be mounted into a rack so that the amount of airflow required for
safe operation is not compromised.
Equipment should be mounted into a rack so that a hazardous condition does not arise
due to uneven mechanical loading.
Consideration should be given to the connection of the equipment to the
power supply circuitry and the effect that any possible overloading of circuits might
have on current protection and power supply wiring. Appropriate
consideration of equipment nameplate ratings should be used when addressing this
concern.
A reliable ground must be maintained at all times. To ensure this, the rack itself
should be grounded. Particular attention should be given to power supply connections
other than the direct connections to the branch circuit (such as the use of power strips
and so on).

Professional documents on grounding techniques include:

1. ANSI/TIA-942 Telecommunications Infrastructure Standard for Data Centers
2. J-STD-607-A-2002 Commercial Building Grounding (Earthing) and Bonding
Requirements for Telecommunications
3. IEEE Std 1100-2005 (IEEE Emerald Book) IEEE Recommended Practice for
Powering and Grounding Electronic Equipment

Getting started

Hardware
VA 210 is one rack unit high and mountable in a nineteen inch rack. All connections to the
node are made from the rear; in the front the only thing relevant for the operator are five LEDs
and two buttons used as on/off switch and software reset button.

In the back, there are two USB slots, one keyboard input connector, one mouse input
connector, one video VGA output connector and one DSUB-9 console connector. In addition
to these connectors, there are five RJ-45 interfaces. Of those five interfaces, four are currently
implemented and used by the application. The IPMI interface (Eth4) is not used by the
application and, for this reason not described in this document.

Eth4
IPMI platform management.
Note: Not for application
management use!

versions.

Default configuration of the Ethernet ports for Nimbra VA 210/VA 210 Field/VA 210 Data
Center is:

Interface IP-address Netmask

eth0 192.168.0.10 255.255.255.0
eth1 DHCP -
eth2 DHCP -
eth3 192.168.1.10 255.255.255.0
eth4 (configurable from BIOS and IPMI) 192.168.2.10 255.255.255.0

and IPMI)
Figure 6. Default configuration of Ethernet interfaces on Nimbra VA 210 DCR.

The ways to set the initial IP addresses of VA 210 differs slightly if a fixed IP address on the
PC is used or if a DHCP server on the PC or other network device is used.

ASI interfaces of VA210 ASI/VA 210 Data Center ASI

The ASI interfaces on VA210 Field ASI and VA210 Data Center ASI are mounted on a plug-
in unit, accessible from the rear of the unit at the top right position. There are four different
ASI interfaces, numbered from right to left. By default, port 1 and 2 are input and port 3 and 4
are output.

Note: There are four different ASI interfaces, numbered from right to left. By default,
port 1 and 2 are input and port 3 and 4 are output. The ports can be configured
for other use.

Connection of PC with VA 210

Connect a PC to the Nimbra VA 210 under configuration with an Ethernet cable. For Nimbra
VA 210 DCR, take in consideration that the four physical RJ-45 connectors form three
different logical interfaces (seen in the table above). Use one of the interfaces with fixed
default IP address. Set the IP address of the PC to the same network (192.168.0.0 or
192.168.1.0) as is defined on the VA 210 and open a web browser by simply adding the IP
address in the URL field in the browser.

Figure 7. Connect a PC to the Nimbra VA 210 node.

If an Ethernet cable is plugged into the eth0 port, the connecting PC needs to have a
192.168.0.0 address set with a netmask of 255.255.255.0 in order to be able to successfully
connect to the Element Manager of the Nimbra VA 210 for further configuration.

16 Getting started Quick Start Guide Nimbra VA210

2013-2014 Net Insight AB, All rights reserved

If an Ethernet cable is plugged into the eth3 port, the connecting PC needs to have a
192.168.1.0 address set with a netmask of 255.255.255.0 in order to be able to successfully
connect to the Element Manager of the Nimbra VA 210 for further configuration.

If eth1 or eth2 are used as connecting interfaces, the direct PC needs to host a DHCP server
which hands out IP-address and netmask to the Nimbra VA 210 node within the same subnet
as the connecting PC. Alternatively, connect both PC and Nimbra VA 210 node to a network
with a DHCP server running on another network device. The DHCP server then provides IP-
address and netmask to both PC and VA 210.

The IPMI interface (eth4) is a special interface for platform management according to the
IMPI standard for out-of-band monitoring and management of computer systems. This
interface is not reachable thru Element Manager and the application running on VA 210 cannot
be managed from here. To change the settings of Eth4, you need to enter BIOS. Please note
that this interface in not to be used for media transport nor application management.

If you need to login on the IPMI interface, the user is ADMIN and the password is ADMIN.
Notice the capital letters. Youll find its web page different from application web pages and
that the application itself is not reachable from the interface.

Continuing the example with configuration via eth0, we connect the RJ-45 cable between the
available Ethernet interface on the PC and interface eth0 on the VA 210 unit under
configuration. Make sure the IP address on the PC is set to network 192.168.0.0 with netmask
255.255.255.0. Ping on the PC Ethernet interface address and 192.168.0.10 (the expected IP
address of the VA 210). Open a Web browser and enter the URL to the Nimbra VA 210, i.e.
http://192.168.0.10 .

The browser that is recommended is Google Chrome. Chrome is the main web browser used
during development. Certain versions of Firefox, Internet Explorer or Safari may not work
with Nimbra VA 210 Element Manager.

A log-in dialog appears, in which the User Name is root and the password is neti.

Figure 8. Log-in dialog in web browser.

The starting page of Element Manager in the Nimbra VA 210 is the status page. In order to get
Nimbra VA 210 operational, a license for the node is needed. A license is provided by the
supply department of Net Insight, but needs to be downloaded to the node by the user. If a

Buttons and front LEDs

Figure 13.LED and button panel at the front of the VA 210 node

There are several LEDs on the control panel and on the drive carriers that provide system and
component status. This chapter explains the meanings of all LED indicators and the
appropriate responses that need to be taken.

Control Panel Buttons on VA 210

Power
The main power switch is used to apply or remove power from the power supply to the server
system. Turning off system power with this button removes the main power but keeps
standby power supplied to the system. Therefore, you must unplug system before
servicing, to avoid damaging yourself and/or the equipment.

Notice that the button needs to be held in the in position for a considerable time (about 5 s)
before the unit is powered down. Hence, an accidental touch of the button is not enough to
power down the node.

Figure 14.Power ON/OFF button

Reset button
Nimbra VA 210 chassis includes two buttons located on the front panel: a reset button and a
power on/off button. The ON/OFF button starts the unit from scratch and all configuration files
are reloaded. The Reset button is a soft version of the restart. Clicking on this recessed button
reboots the node, but without the power surge.

Figure 15.The reset button is used for a soft reboot of the system. The button is
receded behind the front.

Control Panel LEDs

The control panel located on the front of the VA 210 chassis has five LEDs. These LEDs
provide information related to different parts of the system. This section explains
what each LED indicates when illuminated and any action that may be required.
