nocost,itisdesignedtoraiseawarenessaboutprotectingpublichealthbypreventingthespreadoffood
borneillness.
CaringAboutFoodSafetyisforanyonewhobuys,prepares,handlesorservesfoodtofamilyandfriends,andpeople
inworkplacesthatprovidefoodtoothers.Itwillbeusefulforpeoplewhoseclientsaremoresusceptibletofoodborne
illness,andforwhomtherearenomandatedfoodsafetytrainingrequirementssuchasoperatorsofchilddaycares
orsmall,residentialcarefacilities.

TheFOODSAFEProgramisacomprehensivefoodsafetytrainingprogramforthefoodserviceindustry.AninitiativeoftheProvinceofBritishColumbia,FOODSAFE
isdevelopedandmanagedbytheBCFOODSAFESecretariatinpartnershipwiththeBCCentreforDiseaseControl,regionalhealthauthorities,BCRestaurantand
FoodServicesAssociation,andWorkSafeBC.

FOODSAFELevel1
FOODSAFELevel1isafoodhandling,sanitationandworksafetycoursedesignedforfrontlinefoodserviceworkerssuchascooks,servers,buspersons,
dishwashersanddeliworkers.Thecoursecoversimportantfoodsafetyandworkersafetyinformationonfoodborneillness,receivingandstoringfood,preparing
food,servingfood,cleaningandsanitizing.
UndertheB.C.PublicHealthAct,theFoodPremisesRegulationstatesthateveryoperatorofafoodserviceestablishment,andatleastoneemployeeoneveryshift,
mustholdaFOODSAFELevel1certificate,oracertificatefromacourserecognizedasequivalenttoFOODSAFE.
FOODSAFELevel1isdeliveredasaneighthourfacetofaceclass,anonlineclassthroughOpenSchoolBC,orbycorrespondence(Level1only).FOODSAFE
Level1workbooksareavailableinEnglish,Chinese,KoreanandPunjabi,andtheFOODSAFEexaminationisavailableinmanyotherlanguages.

July29,2013arevaliduntilJuly29,2018.AshortrefreshercourseisofferedthatcoversalltheessentialsoftheFOODSAFELevel1trainingprogram.Agradeof

FOODSAFELevel2isdesignedforfoodserviceownersandmanagers,kitchenmanagers,executivechefsandotherswhoareresponsibleformanagingfood
safety.ThecoursehasashortreviewofFOODSAFELevel1,andmodulesonManagingforFoodSafetyandWritingaFoodSafetyPlan.FOODSAFELevel2is
deliveredasaneighthourfacetofaceclass,oranonlineclassthroughOpenSchoolBC.FOODSAFELevel1isaprerequisiteforFOODSAFELevel2.

TheMarketSafeprogramisdesignedtoincreaseawarenessandknowledgeoffoodsafetyandsafefoodhandlingproceduresforfarmers'marketvendors,market
managers,farmgatevendors,homekitchensmallscalefoodprocessors,andotherswhomake,bakeorproducefoodproductsforpublicconsumptionoutside
regulatedfoodserviceestablishments.
TheMarketSafecourseisafivehourinteractiveclassroomcourse.ItwasdevelopedbytheBCFOODSAFESecretariatinpartnershipwiththeBCAssociationof
Farmers'Markets,andissupportedbytheregionalhealthauthorities,BCCentreforDiseaseControlandMinistryofAgricultureandLands.

TheFoodSafetyPlanningPortalforFoodProcessors,offeredbytheSmallScaleFoodProcessorsAssociations,provideseducationandsupportforB.C.processors
indevelopingfoodsafetyplans.
