routines.
Tier 1: My classroom will include a main set of rules that all of my students will follow. These
rules will be very basic like, Walk into the Classroom Quietly, Wait your turn and do not
interrupt, Listen and Respect Teacher and Classmates, and Use your Time Wisely. These rules
will be posted in the classroom and will be reinforced daily. Some of the main procedures that
will be practiced are leaving the classroom and going to lunch.
Tier 2: For some of my students the daily routines, procedures and rules are not going to be
enough. Coming into a room quietly, waiting your turn and listening to the teacher do not come
as easily to some students so I will have those students working on social skills and these
procedures in small groups. The students will gain knowledge about those skills and many more,
I think that along with the social skills groups some of the students will need mentors that will
help them understand some of those skills as well.
Tier 3: Some of my students will need even further help getting these procedures down will need
behavior plans and frequent monitoring.
There are many theoretical models to choose from but the one that I most closely relate to is the
behavioral theoretical model. The biggest reason that I relate to this model is that behavior
always has a reason. Behaviors dont just come up out of the blue. I also like it because there are
nice teacher friendly ways of working with the students with behavior problems.
The behavior model states that every situation has an antecedent a behavior and then a
consequence. The antecedent is the thing that sets off the behavior. It is going to happen before
the behavior happens. Some examples of an antecedent are having to write something down,
taking turns, raising ones hand. Most of the time an antecedent is going to be something that the
student does not like or upsets them. Then after the antecedent the behavior of the student
actually happens. Some things the student might do are: hit, scream, run away or cry. The next
part is the consequence. The consequence is what is going to decide whether the behavior is
going to continue again and to what extent. Some examples of this are: ignoring or punishing. All
the things stated above are part of the A-B-C model. Antecedent-behavior-consequence.
ABA is applied behavior analysis. ABA is a special scientific way about working with
behavior. It demonstrates that behavior is something that has a meaning and reasoning. Also
behavior is something that is based on the environment. This is why we as teachers want to make
our classrooms as comfortable for our students. Also it proves that behavior is something that has
a purpose and in that case we can do things to fix or change behaviors. Some of the big things
that teachers can do are model the behavior that they want to see.
Modeling behaviors has been very effective in general education and in special education.
Another thing teachers have to keep in mind is giving non examples as well. So modeling how
sitting in the desk quietly is the wanted behavior and talking and being loud and rude in the desk
is the behavior that is not wanted. Shaping behaviors until the correct one is presented is another
good way of getting good behavior in the end from students as well.
filled the student will turn it in to the teacher and exchange it for 15 minutes of choice time.
The nurtured heart approach is an approach that helps children find their inner wealth. It
helps parents and educators to tone down some of the behaviors found in children but still make
stronger connections with the child. The child benefits because they are able to gain control of
their behaviors and intensity and they are able to get more out of their relationships with some of
the adults in their lives. The biggest and most beautiful thing about nurtured heart is that it helps
see the positives in every child even when you feel like there cant possibly be any. There are
three main strands to this approach. The first one is, absolutely no! It means that you will refuse
to energize negative behavior. The second is, absolutely yes! It is that you will relentlessly
energize the positive. And the third is, absolutely clear you will maintain total clarity about rules
that demonstrate fair & consistent boundaries. These three strands will help keep the positive
energy and will help find the positives in the kids that dont even seem possible.
Champs is an approach and a set of expectations that can be used in any classroom or
with any rules, rewards or consequences that are already set up. It can even be used if there is
already a school wide management plan in place. CHAMPS is an acronym and stands for:
Conversation: Can students talk to each other during this activity?
Help: How do students get the teachers attention and their questions answered?
Activity: What is the task/objective? What is the end product?
Movement: Can students move about during this activity?
Participation: How do students show they are fully participating? What does work behavior
look/sound like?
Success: When students meet CHAMPS expectations, they will be successful!
Champs will help reduce classroom disruptions and office referrals, improve classroom climate,
increase student on-task behavior, and establish respectful and civil interactions. For champs to
be successful you must show and explain the expectations. The students need the expectations to
be clear and they need time to practice the expectations. To allow the students practice time the
student can become actors and actresses and can model how each expectation should look.
Task Analysis:
The student previously was getting to class and interrupting the teacher and then would get upset
when it was time to sit down. To teach this student how to go about this procedure I would give
him a social story that talks about the appropriate behaviors for this time. I would go over this
before he leaves my classroom and he would also use a small picture schedule to help him in the
classroom as well. If this is not enough we would re teach this be modeling it. The general
education teacher would give the student positive reinforcement by coming by his desk and
saying hello.
Final reflections on the course including the information on your behavior change project.
I really enjoyed this class. I have learned a lot about behaviors, behavior analysis and data
collection for behavior change projects. For my behavior change project I had decided to do
keeping my room clean. I took my baseline data for one week and I ended up doing very poor at
keeping my room clean. I ended up taking data at the end of each day if my room was clean.
Since my room was really not staying very clean I had to change something so I tried logging my
data differently. I changed my logging by taping a piece of paper to my door and I velcroed a
marker next to it so I would mark a tally on the paper every time I had a clean room when I left
my room. Making the tally mark every time I left was enough positive reinforcement for myself
and my room stayed cleaner and cleaner as the time went on. I would always clean up my messes
and keep my room clean so that when I left at some point in the day for class or whatever it may
be I would be able to place a check mark and I really enjoyed doing that. I think that my
behavior is changed but I do not think I am ready to get rid of my chart and I think I will
