Lesson Title: Writing a Short Descriptive Story

Time Needed: 50 minutes

Idaho 6th Grade Content Standard: CCRA.W.3: Write narratives to develop real or imagined
experiences or events using effective technique, well-chosen details, and well-structured event
sequences.

Objectives:

Students will develop a detailed short story using descriptive writing


Students will gain experience in writing a structured story
Students will gain confidence in detailing their writing

Materials: Assignment rubric, descriptive writing lesson handouts/activity sheets, event


sequence diagram, and writing technique examples.

Lesson sections:

Assignment: Present short descriptive story assignment. Go over rubric. (5 min)


Descriptive writing lesson: Pass out and read informational descriptive writing handouts.
Pass out descriptive writing activity sheets. Students compare and contrasting descriptive
and not so descriptive sentences and then change the not so descriptive sentences into
descriptive ones themselves. Time for questions and ideas while students fill out
worksheets.(20 min)
Event sequence: Pass out and discuss event sequence diagram (class has had previous
story structure lessons). Encourage class to use the diagrams shown steps when writing
their own short story. (10 min)
Prepare to write: Go over a few different short story writing techniques and examples. If
time allows also brainstorm in journals and give activity sheet feedback to any struggling
students. (15 min)

1. Ask and encourage questions during lesson


2. Feedback on activity sheets during brain storm time
3. Grade assignments
