1. both marjane and waiyaki struggled between being an individual and conforming with society

6. marjane tried to find herself in the culture with sex, drugs, finding friends, and losing them;
she also lives in a variety of different apartments.

9. waikayi wants to merge the two sides of the community but by doing so he ended up
rejected from both communities

Individual vs Community
1 Marjane felt lost because of the two cultures vs waiyaki knew who he was
10. marjane mainly had an internal struggle vs waiyaki internal and external
11. similar struggle with christianity, marjanes boyfriends mother hated her because she was
iranian and Joshua would not have his daughters associate with him
12. marjanes personality and beliefs did not line up with her family exactly later on in the book
just like mithoni. both of them were lost in the the transition to the west. Nyambura and
waiyaki are more influenced by the family values.
13. marjane value may not have been the same as family but her family always were there to
support her, and mithoni did not have that minus Nyambura. She was exiled by joshua
