Example Questions and Answers

You may find the example question and potential responses below useful to consider prior to
completing your application.

Example Application Question:

The incumbent is required to be fluent in French both conversationally and in writing. Please describe
how you have obtained considerable knowledge of French by outlining your relevant education, training
and work experience, and indicate how it has provided you with this level of knowledge. Be specific
regarding course content or subject areas and include dates.

Examples of Acceptable Answers:

1. I was born in Montreal and spoke both French and English fluently as a child. In school from grades 1
12 (between 1963 and 1975) at the LAcademie de Saint Anne. I became familiar with expressing
myself in French through written communications as all my school work was completed in French. I
have applied this knowledge extensively throughout my life and still converse with my family in French
only. I continue to read French literature through borrowing books from the local library and I write a
monthly column for the Montreal Gazette. I can verify this through a test in French to demonstrate both
oral and written language skill or through contacting the Montreal Gazette Editor, Joe News at 555-
3232.

2. I have acquired fluent French skill through a French immersion program offered by the Federal
Government for civil servants in 1990. The course was an intensive three months of instruction and
practical exercises with a comprehensive oral and written test at the end. The course covered French
grammar and structure as well as conversational aspects. I received an overall mark of 80%. Since the
course, I write and speak French in my current position as a trainer at the Department of National
Defence, approximately 25% of the time over a 3-year period. Please contact my supervisor,

Instructions

Please answer the following questions. These questions reflect the essential qualifications of this
position and therefore, in order to be given further consideration, you must clearly demonstrate how
you meet these qualifications. You must pass all four questions in order to advance to the next stage
of the competition. Please provide references for each response. Your responses may be in point
form, as long as all aspects of the questions are addressed.

Questions

1. The incumbent is required to possess a Grade 12 education, plus one year of specialized training in office
administration, business or a related discipline as well as 2 years of related office experience, preferably in
a post secondary institution, working with ESL students. Please describe how you have obtained this
knowledge and experience by outlining your relevant education, training and work history. Be specific
regarding course content or subject areas and include dates.

2. This position is central to the programs operational activities and a key component of the role is providing
administrative assistance. This includes producing memorandums, transcribing data onto relevant forms,
maintaining department training manuals, and preparing and distributing instructor packages. Please
describe your experience in these areas and identify the groups that you have dealt with and in what
capacity you functioned.

3. Performing accurate and timely data entry is a significant component of this job as this position will be
required to enter evaluation results and survey responses. How have you developed your ability in this
area? When describing education and experience, provide specific information. Please provide a method
of verification of your statements or work samples which can substantiate your statements.

4. This position relies on the ability to use a personal computer to store and retrieve information.
Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Microsoft office and familiarity with a large student records
database is required. Please describe your abilities in this area, how you obtained your skills, and what
software applications you can operate. Provide details and examples of the types of documents you
produce and the commands and functions you perform, specifically with Microsoft Excel.
