Rationale Statement-Standard #9

Standard #9 Planning for Instruction

The teacher engages in ongoing individual and collaborative professional learning

designed to impact practice in ways that lead to improved learning for each student, using

evidence of student achievement, action research and best practice to expand a repertoire

of skills, strategies, materials, assessments and ideas to increase student learning

(Professional Development in New Jersey, 2014, p. 12).

Rationale Statement:

The artifact corresponding to standard nine are four blog posts relating to my experience

in service learning. The blog posts contain essential information based upon my analysis of

service learning upon which I am able to reflect. These posts specifically correlate to standard

9.iii.1 that states, The teacher takes responsibility for student learning and uses ongoing analysis

and reflection to improve planning and practice (Professional Development in New Jersey,

2014, p. 12). Reflection upon each individual class as well as each grade level is essential in

order to improve student growth and knowledge. My blog posts contain just a few of the various

techniques and situations I experienced in the field.

I have never blogged before, nor written in a diary or journal. With that said, to write

upon such an experience took some practice. More often than not I referred back to my notes as a

refresher. There is much that occurs within an eight-week period. Through blogging, I have

learned that it is vital for a teacher to reflect upon each day. Though it may take some time, and

thinking, the outcome is worth it. That is, one can refer back to reflections in order to see where

the class was at one point in time and how far that they have come. As I look back on these from

a future standpoint, I intend to put my reflections into practice. For instance, my cooperating

teacher enabled students to allow laughter to thrive within the classroom. I want to ensure

laughter is an aspect of my classroom environment in the future as well.

For the future, I will refer back to my blog posts. My blog posts serve as a reminder of

how I saw the class through the eyes of a teacher and a student. That is, I am a student in college

making the transition to becoming a teacher. It is a world that is still new to me. The blog posts

will remind me of where I came from when I look back upon these ten years from now.
