Remotesensingisthescienceofacquiring,processing,andinterpretingimagesand
relateddata,acquiredfromaircraftandsatellites,thatrecordtheinteractionbetweenmatter
andelectromagneticenergy.Remotesensingimagesareusedformineralexplorationin
twoapplications:(1)mapgeologyandthefaultsandfracturesthatlocalizeoredeposits(2)
recognizehydrothermallyalteredrocksbytheirspectralsignatures.Landsatthematic
mapper(TM)satelliteimagesarewidelyusedtointerpretbothstructureandhydrothermal
alteration.DigitallyprocessedTMratioimagescanidentifytwoassemblagesof
hydrothermalalterationmineralsironminerals,andclaysplusalunite.InnorthernChile,TM
ratioimagesdefinedtheprospectsthatarenowmajorcopperdepositsatCollahuasiand
Ujina.Hyperspectralimagingsystemscanidentifyindividualspeciesofironandclay
minerals,whichcanprovidedetailsofhydrothermalzoning.Silicification,whichisan
importantindicatorofhydrothermalalteration,isnotrecognizableonTMandhyperspectral
