Write short notes on :

29. a. Methods of reducing cutting forces
b. Stripping force
Stripping force. Two actions take place in the punching process punching and stripping. Stripping
means extracting the punch. A stripping force develops due to the spring back (or resiliency) of the
punched material that grips the punch. This force is generally expressed as a percentage of the force
required to punch the hole, although it varies with the type of material being punched and the amount
of clearance between the cutting edges.

What is deep drawing? What type of components can be made by
33. deep drawing operation?
How does a compound die differ from a progressive die? Giving a
34. neat sketch describe constructional feature and working of a
compound.
A compound die differs from a progressive die in that it performs two or more cutting operations
during one stroke of the press at one station only.

Compound dies are slower in operation than progressive dies but they have advantages for certain jobs,
especially where tolerance are close (1) the cutting operation, by the action of the knockout plate
,ensures flatness of the blank.2 Large parts can be blanked in a smaller press if compound dies rather
than progressive dies are used.
What is the role of clearance in blanking and piercing operations?
35. How are clearance provided on punch and die? On what factors
do the die and punch clearance depends?
