Chapter 2:

The man we’ve been waiting for

Me, Becky and Lucy watched as Caroline moved out from her office, three days
later, with other people carrying her boxes. Of course she wouldn’t carry them
herself if her life depended on it. Other people were sad to see her go, but I was
glad I was seeing the her backside for once. The only thing I was afraid of now was
the new person I would be working for. The conversation we had the other day got
me worried.
When the door closed behind her, all three of us whispered
“Yes!”
And then the new boxes started to come in.
Other people were bring in the boxes so we had another stuck up bitch or prick.
After a few minutes of people bring in boxes a man walked in with people walking
beside him talking very quickly and handing him files and paper. He wore an all
black suit with a white tie. His structure was strong and masculine, and his looks
were angular, so in ever way he turned, he always looked…perfect. He wore sun-
glasses, they kind of showed out his perfect pointy nose.
I stared at him gormless.
Becky nudged me in my side “See I told you” she said, I looked round to her
quickly.
“What?” I said.
“That the boss would be a good looking hunky twenties man” she said nudging her
head towards him.
“Well yer, will just see how good he really is” I said crossing my arms over my
chest.
“Millie!” someone shouted angrily, I looked around to see Jackie standing by our
new boss looking at me.
“Jake!” I called back walking towards her.
“Ha, ha, this is Mr Williams. He is are new boss here, I sure you like to take his
orders” she said smiling.
“Right, Mr Williams-”
“Call me Alex, please” he sounded as if he was begging, and his voice! God was it
heavy American.
I shrugged “Alex, is there anything you would like me to do to help you settle in?”
I asked not really caring.
“If you would like to start sorting out my boxes that in my office that will be a
great help” he said. I nodded my head and walked over to his office.

I closed the office door behind me and shivered.

I walked over to the boxes beside the desk and just started to put everything on his
desk.
Pencil holder thingy, folders, stapler (not that he needed it because I would be
doing most of his work), a paper organizer and everything else to make you look
like you were working.

I moved onto a few more boxes and saw a box full of pictures. I looked
back at the door and then back at box. I opened the box carefully and saw old black
and white pictures hidden inside, I was just about to pick one up when I heard the
voice.
“Doesn’t your job description tell you not to go threw someone personal
belonging, and as you can see that box is personal” I turned around quickly and
looked at him. I didn’t even hear the door open or him walking in.
His glasses were still attached to his nose.
“Well…err…I’m sorry, I didn’t me to be nosy, I just mistaken it. You caught me at
the right time” I said, I smiled nervously. Great start Millie.
He raced one eyebrow.
Maybe if he took of his glasses, I might actual see how angry you are.
“Hmm, well I think I will be keeping a close eye on you Miss. Burton” he said,
I crossed my arms in front of me, if were playing smug well “Call me Millie” I
said smiling at him smugly, I already hated him.
I saw his eyebrows crease in-between, he was annoyed now.
“I think it would be best if I unpacked my boxes” he said storming past me taking a
box from the floor and placing it on the desk.
“Yes, well I’m going to see if there’s any paper for you to sign or read. Call me if
you need anything” I knew if I was too impolite then I might lose my job.
I waited a moment for him to respond, but he didn’t, there was just a cold dead
silence. It felt horribly uncomfortable. I walked out quickly, trying not make
myself look more of a fool in front of him.

***
“Isn’t he just gorgeous” Lucy said, stirring her cup of tea while staring at him walk
past.
“Yer, a bunch of joy” I said sarcastically and turned away. “I mean look at him,
he’s paler than us and he comes from America for God sake. He hasn’t taken of the
bloody glasses yet, and walks about the place as if he owns it!”
“He does own it Mills’” Lucy said back “Anyway, you only known him for half an
hour and you already hate him. What’s he done?” she asked.
“Well lets just say he get the strops if you accidentally look threw his personal
boxes, he never said there was any in there, so I assumed he wanted me to unpack
it” I moaned even more “And then he gets me to do all his paper work and
everything”
“That is your Job” she said
I didn’t listen I just carried on “I bet he’ll want me to wipe his ass soon” I nearly
shouted.
“Whoa! Calm down tiger. Take deep breaths and count to five” she calmly said.
I took a deep breath to calm myself.
“Better?” she asked handing me a cup of coffee.
I nodded and took the coffee from her.
“It’s lunch time already and his already flirting with the girls” I gestured my hand
towards Kellie and Rachel, giggling there little heads of while Alex charmed the
hell out of them.
“For fuck sake Mills, give the man a rest his most likely just introducing himself”
Lucy moaned.
“Your right, you right. I’ll see how he is for a few days then I’ll see what he’s
really like” I said,
Lucy smiled at me and nodded her head. “I’m happy you going the right way about
this” she said,
I smiled and nodded.
“Where Becky?” I asked.
“Oh! She went home for lunch, her brother was coming round for a while,
something up with their Dad or something” she said,
I nodded my head and looked back at Alex, I noticed he was staring at me and then
quickly look back down at the girls. I mean his glasses were in my angle.
I shook my head and walked back to my desk and started doing the rest of his
paper.

When the clock struck five I was out of here like a bullet. I jumped into my car and
turned the volume right up, listen to the classic eighties music my mom listen to.
I thought the music would drawn out the thoughts of Alex.
When I got home I dumped my bags by the door and kicked off my shoes
and walked to my favourite part of the house. The kitchen.
While I looked threw the cupboards for something to nibble on, Jinks came purring
around my legs and rubbing his head against my ankles.
“Hungry Jinks?” I asked looking down at him. As if he heard me, he looked up at
the same time and it looked like he was smiling wider. I signed happily and walked
to the cupboard where all his food was.
“On the menu tonight we have, tuna, steak or chicken?” I looked down at Jinks and
he was also looking, climbing into the cupboard. I picked a tuna sashay and him as
well and put his food in the bowl as well as some biscuits.
I got changed and sat down on the sofa after eating dinner.

Flicking threw the channels later during the night I came across a channel
about mythical creature.
I watched it for a bit not really holding onto the words that the people were saying,
slipping into my haziness and then final going out cold.

I woke up next morning with my cloak beeping extremely loudly for my

ears. I groaned and went to slam the sleep button when I fell straight to the floor
face first.
“Ouch” I groaned till half tired. I opened my eyes and looked around the room to
see that it wasn’t my bedroom. Of course it was the living room. I sat up properly
and rubbed my forehead. It seemed as if the cloak was getting louder, I signed
heavily and got up slowly, holding the coffee table for support. I lazily walked over
into my bedroom and pressed the sleep button quickly.
I dropped down on my bed, belly first, and my eyes closed suddenly.

Hour later
Once again the alarm cloak sounded horribly loud. I turned towards the
cloak and looked at the time, five minutes to nine….shit!
I jumped of the bed and ran into the bathroom, taking a extremely quick wash.
I rushed out taking fresh clothes from my closet and slinging my sweats onto the
bed.
While running to the door while trying to put my other shoe and grab my bags at
the same time, the phone went off.
I hesitated to answer but then left it slamming my front door behind me and racing
towards my car for work.

When I got into work, I expected Jackie to call out to me like she does every
morning
“Late again are we Millie” but nothing, I looked towards the front desk and saw
she wasn’t there filling her nails. Weird.
I passed the thought and concentrated on getting to my desk, preventing on being
even more late.
I slammed my papers on my desk and saw that Alex was leaning against the door
frame that lead into his office. I looked at him to see that he held and phone in his
‘quite’ big muscline hand. I wonder what those hands could do. Never mind!
“Morning” I said and quickly looked back at my paper. Even those he still had
stupid sun glasses on, it still seemed I was glued to his glare.
I heard him heave himself off the door frame and walked up to me. To close for my
likeing.
“When phones ring you tend to pick them up” he said camly but seemed deadly…
and slightly sexy. He chucked the phone done on my desk.
“Don’t be late again” he said while walking away.
I didn’t relise until I heard the papers crunch in my hands that my hands turned into
fists. My jaw became clenched and my blood boiled in me.
I threw the screwed up pieces of papers on the desk with some force. I pushed
myself away from the desk and went to go and look for Lucy and Becky.

While looking for them, round the corner I heard a convosation of Kellie and
Rachel by the coffee machine, I stayed behind the wall listen to there convosation.
“Did you see Jackie and Alex walk out of work together last night” Kellie said in
her horrifying squeak of a voice.
“I know, she was talking about it to me after lunch.” Rachel said. “She said that
they were, and I quote, ‘get busy tonight’”
When Rachel said those words I wanted to throw up in the nearest bin. ‘Get busy’
what was she thinking, and him! Hitting on one of the girls first day here. It was
quite sickening. And Jackie for going alone with it…doesn’t surprise me.
“Yer, she said she was going to phone me up last night, but she never did. Must of
done some busy work last night. I wonder how much paper work they had to do,
you know Jackie being a receptionist. She must have a lot of paper work”
Kellie was a typical blonde, hasn’t got a brain bigger than her own bloody nose.
Kellie had tiny features, and she was exceedingly tall. Rachel was complete
opposite, dark brown, with a brain bigger than her head, massive feature and
bigger than the average buffalo. Those she seemed to act like she was blonde. Must
rub off on people.
I heard Rachel give out a loud frustrated sign.
“Huh!” Kellie gasped “You didn’t tell Jackie about him flirting with me?!” Kellie
quickly asked.
“No, because he was flirting with me” Rachel snapped a bit disgusted at her friend.
“Tut! No, he was flirting with me. Did you see how close he was to me”
I rolled my eyes seeing I wasn’t going to get any more information out of them and
decided to walk past them now.
I tried to look at them while they were bickering over who Alex was flirting with.

I found Lucy and Becky on there desk answer calls looking things up on the
computer.
Lucy was free so I talked to her, because Becky was talking to someone on the
phone.
“I have some new to tell you” I whispered to Lucy pulling her away from the desk.
“What! Can’t you see I’m trying to do my work here women!” she half shrieked at
me.
I signed loudly and told her anyway “Apparently Jackie and Alex went out last
night, and I quote from the tweedle dee and tweedle dum” Kellie and Rachel “and
got busy” I said.
Lucy mouth dropped to the ground in an instant. “No way! I wanted to be the first
to get with the boss” she moaned. I rolled my eyes.
“What did Lucy want to be first?” Becky asked walking to us.
“She wants to the first at everything” I muttered. She slapped me around the arm
playfully. “No, I heard from Kellie and Rachel that Jackie got busy with the new
,and so you think, improved boss” I said.
“You still don’t like him?” Lucy asked.
“No not really, not after what he said to me this morning and what I heard, I
wanted to throw up!” I half shouted.
“What did he say to you this morning?” Becky asked.
“When a phone rings, you tend to pick it up” I said putting on a really heavy
American accent. “And then threw the phone at me. Not aggressively, just throw it
on my desk in front of me and walked away”
“Not the morning person” Becky said, I laughed and shook my head
“Any way, Kellie were bickering on about Alex and Jackie, and she hadn’t come in
this morning and I guess you not going to come into today” I said,
Lucy and Becky looked confused then looked at each other.
“Uncomfortable about being around him?” Becky said shrugging her shoulders. I
shrugged back.
“Or! Maybe he was sooo good that she died from-”
“Millie” that to familiar voice was getting on my nerves.
I took a deep breath to calm myself, no not from excitement but from annoyance.
“Alex” I said putting on a fake smile.
“I thought your morning job said that you should be looking for my paper work or
something like that” he said.
“Yes, but I was just talking to Lucy and Becky” they waved “And it doesn’t take
me that long too-” he cut me off by raising his hand in front of me.
“I don’t care, not only are you preventing them from doing there job, your
preventing yourself. Now, go” he said. Once again I gritted my teeth and walked
passed him, the feeling when I walked passed him was cold and brute.
When I was behind him, I stuck out my tongue, I’ll stick your paper working
somewhere where the sun don’t shine no more.
And on that note I stormed off to his office looking for his bloody paper work.

“I’m guessing from the incident you had today with Alex, you don’t like him?”
Lucy asked while walking to our cars.
“You guessed right. God you know me so well Luc!” I exclaimed.
Lucy smiled like a five year old and shrugged her shoulders. Translation, ‘don’t I
just know’
“Come on! He obvious he doesn’t like because of your records, I saw him looking
at them this morning” Becky said.
My head snapped around to hers, tearing myself away from Lucy childish smile.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” I snapped
“Because you kept on bickering about him this morning with Jackie, I didn’t get
time to breath a word to you” She answered.
“Who side are you on!” Lucy blurted
Becky huffed out a big sign. “Yours of course, but you could at least put a bit of
effort into making him like you”
“O.K Einstein, what do you propose?” I asked sarcastically.
“Turning up on work on time might just help” She said looking away to open up
her car.
“I can do that, I’ll just set my clock half an hour of what I’m suppose to get up” I
said.
“Suppose? Millie suppose isn’t the right word for you, maybe have to or are might
be the right words to use in that sentence. Maybe it might help if you didn’t go out
so much and drink your life away” Becky opened her boot and chucked her bags in
the car.
“O.K starting from tonight I’ll be in before Alex can even start is car up to get
here” I said proudly, most likely not to happen.
“We’ll watch, if you in before us they we will be highly happy, and maybe Alex
might just get to like you. See you” She pointed at me “Tomorrow morning” she
said climbing into her car and then driving off.
“Not if I see you first!” I shouted as I watched her car disappear into the traffic.
“She has got a point Millie” Lucy said. I turned back round to her.
I signed in defeat because I knew it was true. “I suppose, we’ll just see what
happens to tomorrow morning. See you tomorrow” I said waving bye to Lucy, she
waved back walked over to her car.
