THROUGH SHORT FILMS PROGRAM EXCHANGE

BETWEEN CITIES IN INDONESIA
ABOUT SHORT FILMS AND MINIKINO

MINIKINO set a 20 minutes (maximum) duration film to enter INDONESIA RAJA open
call for submission. Short film has different storytelling format compared to feature
length film, similar like shorts/poetry and novel comparison in literature works.

As the first organization in Indonesia that focuses on short films since 2002,
MINIKINO has a long history of short films screenings & discussions and programs
collaborating with other working partners in Indonesia, South East Asia, and
International.

Pulling out itself from the romanticism of "Indie Films, MINIKINO focus on short
films format and media to avoid getting lost in independence/ indie spirit. It is a pity
that thousand of short duration films labeled 'indie films' in Indonesia are produced
but only few that qualified to reach out an international audience.

The core problem might be a simple matter: an overdose of "indie film" spirit
without realizing their short films format that become just a 'cut version' of a
feature-length film. However, these might also be a result of an unconscious
imitation of the most popular 'sinetron'/soap opera format in Indonesia. While in fact
a big idea, the boring version of it, can be made simple, witty, and interesting if it
gets the right treatment.

MINIKINO builds a short films culture in Indonesia with a consistent screenings &
discussions featuring Indonesian, regional and international short films that were
selected by a programmer in a program, choosing several short films with a certain
theme with a specific sequence to be screened. These activities attended by
filmmakers with any possible mean including online conference after the screening.

MINIKINO and all the programmers work in bringing Indonesian short films to meet
their audience. By framing these short films in to a designed program with a specific
theme within the big idea; the annual short films program exchange from various
areas/cities in Indonesia, the screenings become lighter and entertaining for general
audience while still containing high literature value for further discussions.

The entire process is carried out based on voluntary work of MINIKINO working
team, selected programmers, and the filmmakers that submit their short films for
selection and programming.

Now until this year 2016 ends, the next process is to find working partners in each
areas/cities; preparing the public space so the audience can meet and watch films
together, hopefully it inspire idea & socio-cultural information exchanges that would
only be made possibile from public screenings. The discussions triggered by these
screenings are a valuable high form of appreciation for all the working parties,
which raised public awareness and critical thinking to what they are watching.

With all the programmers of Indonesia Raja 2016, MINIKINO invite us all to watch
and research INDONESIA RAJA from various point of view.
