Gun control
Mariah Benson

Andrew Caldwell JR
By Andrew Caldwell JR
Anduryn Gallimore
Gun control has been and still is a major issue in the United States, especially after the mass
shooting in Orlando, Florida, killing 49 people in June, 2016. Cheyanne Hardy

Savannah Harraway
Some use guns for good, like protection, but some use them for their own purposes, like revenge or
what they think is necessary. There have even been cases where it just happens. Children find their
way to these dangerous weapons and injure or kill themselves when they don't even know what a
gun is or what purpose it serves. Lets go a little deeper, shall we?

One shooting that happened in 2016 was the shooting during a Dallas protest about the recent Journalists
police shootings in Louisiana and Minnesota. During a peaceful protest on Thursday, July 7, 2016,
five police officers were shot and two civilians were caught in the crossfire. It was later confirmed Mahogany Bankston
that the ambush came from above the protest and the five officers didn't survive the injuries. Seven
more were claimed injured afterwards. Precious Brown

Gun control has been an evolving issue; it has been changed or talked about on six occasions in the
past centennial by the White House and Congress to regulate guns. Ever since Bill Clinton signed the Kaylah Crutcher
expired Assault Weapons Ban, making restrictions on guns on the market and being owned by
citizens of powerful firearms, it hasnt worked at all. Krichonna DeVance

Legislation was passed in 1934 to make new criminal consequences with new tax laws and regula- Erick Dominguez

tional Firearms Act with more laws after fours years. They added regulations such as a $200 tax on Javon Ferguson
machine guns and shotguns, which was recorded in a national registry.

On October 22, 1968, President Lyndon Johnson then signed another major law reform of guns after Katelyn Givhan
high value deaths. For instance, the assassination of John F. Kennedy. His killer, Lee H. Oswald, used
an ordered rifle to kill JFK in Dallas. Then theres the Martin Luther King Jr. assassination on April 4, Unique Mattison
1968, which threatened African Americans more than ever.
Dawon Smith
Robert F. Kennedy then introduced a bill that had stricter licensing and registration standards, a ban
on the market of guns, ammunition felons and to those that are mentally incapable. It also had new
standards on interstate sales and so-called destructive devices, like deadly gases, bombs, gre-
nades, rockets, and missiles. As a result, it set the stage for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and
Firearms in 1972.

As 1986 came, Ronald Reagan signed the Firearms Owner's Protection Act on May 19. Mainly it
banned further sales on any automatic weapons like machine guns and to private customers or
purchasers. But this also helped gun activists and the National Rifle Association who didn't like the
Gun Control Act. This law allowed guns to pass freely through states, but only if they were locked
away or not loaded.

Reagan's press secretary, James Brady, was shot in the head during the attempted assassination of
Reagan within 70 days of his presidency in 1981. Named after Brady, the Brady Bill was intro-
duced, which required federally licensed dealers to make background checks on gun purchases,
especially handguns. This requirement didn't last long; it was phased out by the FBI when they
launched their Criminal Background Check System in November 1998. (Continued on pg. 2)
Gun control (continued)
That next year, Reagan, and two past presidents, Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter, signed a new legislation that banned the manufacture,
possession and sale of weapons that are meant for combat, plus limited the size of the magazine or ammo clip to those heavy firearms.

The Assault Weapons Ban expired in 2004 during the George Bush presidency and the ban has yet to be renewed. The only real attempt
for reauthorization on gun control was by Rep. David Cicilline, a democrat in Rhode Island. Yet Congress tries constantly to reject any
attempts to change gun control laws.

In depth: Derrick Robinson (featured online at

www.imnotlion.weebly.com)
By Unique Mattison

In this month's coverage of In Depth, Derrick Robinson, one of our janitors, was interviewed.

Robinson was asked whether or not he ever feels overlooked by people in the school and replied, No, not everyday. I think a lot of kids
are willing to help. Most of the kids come and speak to me.

When asked if being a janitor is what he wanted to do, he said, No, it just kind of fell in at the right time. I was 22 years old when I applied
for it, they gave it to me. It fell in with my schedule very well at the time because I was in school.

This led to the question of what he pursued before this, and if he is still doing so. He said, Yes. He has been coaching track for 24 years
and has been doing custodian for 25 years.

I asked if he liked his job at all and he said, Yes, I do. It has its days when I come in and I have a good day. I enjoy being around people. I
have meet a lot of people of people doing this job.

He was also questioned in this interview about whether or not this job is boring. He replied, Never boring...not exciting but never boring.

When asked about school and family, Robinson indicated, I do not go to school. Im too old for that. I have no family and Im fine with
being single and I also graduated here, class of 88.

He also gave some insight on his personal life regarding high school. He really didnt have a favorite subject because they were all a bit
tough for him. His favorite teachers were Mr. Ward, Mr. Masters, Mrs. Hillman, Mr. Gates, Mrs. Snelling, and Ms. Moxley. He also said he
started in 1992 as a sub and was hired at Fairport Middle School, then went to Allen School before coming to Meadowdale. He has been
here since 2007. He says he enjoys meeting the kids that come through here and seeing them graduate.

Derrick is a diamond in the rough and he is always sure to have a smile on his face.

Amazing little devil (featured online at

www.imnotlion.weebly.com)
By: Javon Ferguson

The Thorny Devil, or the mountain dragon, is a small reptile which only grows up to 8 inches long.
It's a spiky lizard native to Australia.

These lizards live between 6 to 20 years. One thing about this lizard is that it's named after a
human sacrifice god and its scientific name is Moloch Horridus. It's inspired by a poem called
Paradise Lost by Milton. The poem describes a horrible Canaanite god and king, Moloch. He was
a terrible king who smeared the blood of his human sacrifices on his body.

These lizards only eat ants. There is a scientific name for this and it is obligate myrmecophages,
but they don't hunt down their prey. They are a more of a sit and wait type of predator. They find
a feeding site and they stick out their tongue and wait for the ants to get trapped on their sticky
tongues.

The Thorny Devil can eat thousands of small black ants a day. They have special teeth that are
designed to chew through the ants tough exterior. Thorny Devils dont like extreme hot or cold
and they are almost completely inactive during the summer.

They burrow underground during the cold winters but they are active during autumn ( March,
April, May) and also late winter to early summer when they mate and lay eggs.

These lizards have a strange knob between their head and shoulders, which is sometimes called a
false head. When in danger they tuck their head between their forelegs leaving the false head
where the real head used to be. Not only do their thorns protect them from predators, but it also
collects condensation. They have moisture attracting grooves between their thorns and it is
sucked into its body, acting as its mouth.

This little devil is quite an amazing creature.

Uber everywhere
By Erick Dominguez

Uber was an app created by Travis Kalanick and Garrett Camp. They made the app because of a
trip they took to Paris in 2008 where the tried to hail for a cab, but none stopped so they got a
simple idea with a tap of a button, where your ride would be there.

They would start up by creating prototypes of the app. It wasn't as Uber is known. It had cars
picking up people instead of random people with cars picking people up. They started in New York
sending out cars then it became more successful and they started up in San Francisco. Its success
kept growing and many people started using the app and after it gained popularity the started to
become known for what it is today, a bunch of randoms picking up users. It got its success be-
cause it was available in more cities than other apps out there.

Uber does not fully own the market competing against rental cars and taxis. Users of Uber enjoy
how fast it is to get a driver instead of having to call a taxi to pick someone up. A survey by Bureau
of Labor Statistics indicates the reason many Uber drivers chose to stay is because 87 percent of
them want to be their own boss. Another app known as Lyft is seen as a competitor with Uber,
but even it can't hold up against Uber.

People enjoy Uber because it's faster and more simple than renting a car because it takes less
time and it's more simple to use.

Happy birthday to you...

By Precious Brown

Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear -- happy birthday to
youuuu!

Has the question Who wrote the birthday song?, or Where did the birthday song come
from? Ever cross your mind? Every 5 year old has memorized and heard the song before.

The song is something that most Americans grow up knowing, as if there were no choice. Even
though one may wonder where the song originated from, how many have actually done their
research?

The song was written by two sisters, Mildred J. (Jessica) Hill (born 1859), and Patty Smith Hill
(born 1868). Some believe that it was a remix to the Good morning to you song, which isnt
very known. The song was first published in 1924. The song didnt become popular until 1934,
when a lawsuit was filed against it by one of the sisters Jessica Hill, because of unauthorized use.

It is estimated that the birthday song brings in about $2 million dollars a year. Statements are
being made that no one knows who actually wrote the song for certain, but the idea came from
the Hill sisters. The idea is a well known song that has been in many traditions and will continue
in history.

Sex or rape

By Krichonna DeVance

Sexual assault victims may not always be those we generally think of when we think of the words sexual assault, or even rape, and
as difficult as these words may be to hear, victims suffer the aftermath in silence. These victims may even be someone we know.

By definition, according to rain.org, rape is the act of unlawful sexual intercourse or any other sexual penetration of the vagina, anus, or
mouth of another person, with or without force, by asex organ, other body part, or foreign object, without the consent of the victim.
Conversely, by definition, consensual sex is the act of an activity that happens when each partner willingly chooses to participate. Open
communication about expectations and desires is a critical factor in obtaining consent. Consent is verbal and clear.

When considering the statistics of sexual assault, they are quite staggering. According to rain.org, statistics state that every 98 seconds
an American is sexually assaulted. On average, there are 321,500 victims (age 12 or older) of rape and sexual assault each year in the
United States. Let us not forget, however, rape and sexual assault occurs on even younger victims. These statistics are only considering
those age 12 or older.

Most people dont know that men can also be sexually assaulted. When asked about whether or not people realized this, quite a
few people made remarks such as, It's not rape if you like it. How did you let a tiny female rape you, Bro?

Most of us realize, in theory, that men can be raped by women as well, but it's just not seen as that big of a problem. Unless the
victim is a child, female-on-male rape is considered so absurd that the only time we really see it as an issue is when it's being
portrayed as a carousel of slapstick wackiness in mainstream comedies.

Men tend to deal with rape differently because they feel as though if they tell, it wouldnt be taken as seriously or their pride
comes into play. While some might not believe this, assault takes a toll on men. It plays a big part in how they conduct them-
selves as adults.

Sexual violence is another issue to consider as it can have long-term effects on victims. The likelihood that a person suffers sui-
cidal or depressive thoughts increases after sexual violence.

94% of women who are raped experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms during the two
weeks following the rape.
30% of women report PTSD symptoms 9 months after the rape.
33% of women who are raped contemplate suicide.
13% of women who are raped attempt suicide.
Approximately 70% of rape or sexual assault victims experience moderate to severe distress, a larger percentage
than for any other violent crime.

The overall gender/sexual breakdown:

While 1.6% of heterosexual men have been raped in adulthood, 13.2% of bisexual men and 11.6% of gay men experience sexual
assault as an adult. While 13% of lesbians and 17% of heterosexual women have been raped, 46% of bisexual women have.
Transgender individuals have high rates of sexual assault as well, with 25% of transgender individuals experiencing sexual assault
after the age of 13.

In conclusion, sexual assault and rape have left devastating effects on those who have, unfortunately, suffered under the hands
of their cruel abusers. It is also naive to believe it is only women who are victims of sexual assault and rape.
Spring sports update
By Dawon Smith

Fall has ended, and now spring is upon us. This means that spring sports are in full-swing. We see
players taking to both field and track. Yes, thats track, baseball, and softball.

Track practice has started, for both girls and boys. The teams will be training very hard to the best
of their ability. If you would like to join, stay after school and meet in the weight room.

Baseball has also started. There will be training in the weight room and in the gym. As the weath-
er improves, they will be seen more outside. Boys practice is Monday through Thursday.

Girls softball is practicing inside the gym. This is where they meet after school as well, but will
been seen more outside with the improved weather as well.

Hope to see you out for the spring sports.

Mythology of paganism
By Javon Ferguson

Paganism comes from the Greek word Pagan, which means non-participant.

It was used in the 4th century by the early Christian community, In reference to the Romans, who
worshipped many deities. In and after the Middle Ages, it was considered a unfamiliar religion
and was presumed to be a fake belief in Gods.

There has been a great deal of debate as to what paganism means, especially since no one be-
fore the 20th century identified themselves as a Pagan. There is not a lot of Paganism in the
modern times.

To be or not to be, that is the question...

Danielle Cummings was interviewed this month about chicken. Her favorite chicken restaurant is Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC).

When asked whether or not she had a preference for bone-in or boneless, she said Bone-in. Thats what I grew up on. Im used to it.

When asked what her favorite seasoning would have to be on her chicken, she said it was garlic. She chose garlic because its healthy
and it tastes good. The moment she was asked if she liked hot or spicy chicken, she hurried and shook her head, No. She said, No, its
indigestion, and messes up your body.

Cummings eats chicken at least four times a week at a minimum. As one can see, she is a chicken lover, like this journalist. Cummings
eats chicken a lot, but also chooses the healthy way of eating it.
Tasmanian tigers
By Unique Mattison

More than eight decades ago the last known Tasmanian tiger died. From that time until today this
animal has become widely known in sketches, coloring books and yellowing photographs. Otherwise,
the Tasmanian tigers have become no more than a memory aging into oblivion, until now.

Recent sightings have been seen by people who are still accepting the wisdom that the animal is
going extinct. This has inspired researchers at Australias James Cook University to commence a mis-
sion to find it themselves. Several people from Australia have claimed they have seen this animal
which isnt a tiger or a dog at all - and, despite looking very much like a tiger and a canine this animal
is neither. This animal is a carnivorous marsupial that has a pouch like a wallabe. It boasts a tail that
can hold the animal up like a kangaroo, stripes, and biting power as well as the ears of a tiger with the
body and legs like a dog and the head and teeth of a hyena.

Once common in Australia and Tasmania, the last known Tasmanian tiger died in 1936 at Tasmanias
Zoo, according to the Australian government. That was more than 100 years after a prominent land
company in Tasmania offered a bounty to settlers to kill the tigers, which were hunting newly intro-
duced sheep, according to the Tasmanian government.

In 1986, the species was declared extinct by international standards, according to the Tasmanian
government. Still, there have been reported sightings ever since the death of the Hobart Zoo animal.
The last recent sighting was in November 2016, in the Tasmanian forest.

Care to take a trip to Tasmania and visit the forest?

Feeding hunger (featured online at www.imnotlion.weebly.com)
By Katelyn Givhan

When hunger strikes we all run to our favorite go-to-snack. Is it going to fill us up or make us hungrier 10 seconds later?

Do you know there are actually 10 foods one should not eat when hungry? This is because these foods and drinks can cause everything
from irritation to blood sugar spikes. The 10 foods to avoid and the reasons to avoid them, according to Olivia Tarantino, nutritionist
and editor of Eat This, Not That, are as follows:

Chips: the body will feel full off of salt, but the body will still crave the sugar and glucose that it needs for energy.
Orange Juice: it will only spike the blood sugar, leading to a short-lived satisfaction and devastating crash that leaves one hungrier.
Spicy food: eating heat on an empty stomach will irritate the digestive system.
Coffee: it causes the stomach to produce even more acid, which will increase inflammation, causing nausea, bloating,
and discomfort.
Rice Cakes: they will cause extreme hunger.
Diet soda: it will make the body think it is about to get sweet energy, and rev hunger with no reward.
Cheese: one will begin to crave more and more.
Gum: it may trick the stomach, but only to make it churn and grumble, which can cause pain and make one more aware that it
needs to eat.
Sushi: it is digested quickly and results in being be even more hungry.
100- calorie packs: one will end up eating more calories than one would in a regular sized pack because one will eat more of these
packs.

So, thats the big 10 list to avoid. Steer clear and grab some celery sticks and carrots.
Causes of death to Africans

By Noelle Freeman

There are many things that people know. They just don't see the big picture. Things such as the leading causes of death in Africa.

Firstly, there are AIDS- related deaths. The number of deaths related to AIDS- related illnesses was estimated to have dropped 22 per-
cent between 2001 and 2012. In 2012, more than 1.1 million people were thought to have died from AIDS- related illnesses in the re-
gion. Roughly 25 million individuals in the region were living with HIV. However, the figures do not paint an entirely accurate picture,
particularly in countries where vital registration data, information on births, deaths, marriage, and migration are incompletely or inade-
quately recorded.
Diarrheal diseases cause most of the global deaths in children under the age of five. According to WHO, (World Health Organization),
there are an estimated 1.7 million cases of diarrheal disease in the world each year, with 780,000 adolescent deaths. In sub- Saharan
Africa, about 644,000 people died from diarrhea in 2012, accounting for 6.7 percent of deaths. These diseases are usually caused by
bacterial, viral and parasitic organisms, but cause death through dehydration.

Next is one of the most well-known killers, malaria. In 2012, malaria, a mosquito- transmitted, parasitic disease killed 618,000 around
the globe, and 568,000 or 92 percent in sub- Saharan Africa. The disease accounted for 5.9 percent of them in sub- Saharan Africa.
Children are particularly vulnerable to malaria. In 2012, deaths of children under the age of five accounted for 41 percent of the deaths.

Stroke is the second leading cause of death globally, after coronary heart disease, accounting for 6.7 million deaths in 2012. Other
causes include preterm birth complications (393,000), birth asphyxiation and trauma (356,000), malnutrition (307,000), coronary heart
disease (293,000) and meningitis (260,000). What can be done to solve these untimely deaths?

Home sweet home

By Mahogany Bankston

In Orange County, California, many parent immigrants allow family and close friends into their
bank accounts and also allow them to take their children out of school. Why do they do this?

They allow them to have bank account information in the event they are arrested by immigration
agents. The immigrants also do this so that they dont have to leave their homes to do anything.
They stay inside their homes because they are terrified that they might get caught by the police.

They are terrified because they can get deported for anything such as driving, grocery shopping,
walking, or anything because they are outside their home; it isnt safe.

Family members are very careful when and if they answer the door because they never know
who is knocking. Family members become very worried if someone doesnt come home on time,
doesnt call or doesnt check in on time.

They risk the fear of becoming deported back to their homes. If parents become deported, they
worry about who is going to take care of their children because if their children were born in the
United States, they will not be deported with their parents.

Superbowl LI (featured online at www.imnotlion.weebly.com)
By Andrew Caldwell

Super Bowl LI has ended and what a game it was! Super Bowl LI was the greatest and the saddest game in NFL history.

On one side, newcomers, Atlanta Falcons and the born champions, New England Patriots. The Falcons haven't been to the Super Bowl
since 1998. While the Patriots have been there more than three times in the past decade. This was the first Super Bowl to ever go into
overtime and it may have been the best one that kept you on the edge of your seat.

In the first two quarters, Atlanta's defense dominated Tom Brady. Their offense was scoring at will and the Patriots had yet to score.
Then Patriots running back Legarrette Blount fumbled and Robert Alford, on the Falcons, recovered the fumble, then scoring another
touchdown five plays later.

After another Patriots possession, Atlanta scored again by Austin Hooper on a touchdown pass to make it 14-0. During the second quar-
ter, Brady threw a pick six to Robert Alford, Patriots fans were losing hope at 21-0. The Patriots did score a field goal before halftime,
but so did Atlanta, having a 28-9 lead.

This is where the magic happened. Remember, the Falcons were up by 25 mid through third quarter. After the Patriots were forced a
three and out which is to give up the ball. The Falcons NFL MVP, Matt Ryan, made a costly fumble which was recovered by the Patriots
midway fourth quarter. This is what got them going to make the miracle comeback.

New England scored a field goal making it 28-12, but they didn't stop there. Their defense went in gear, sacking Ryan multiple times and
made him fumble at the Falcons 25. After the turnover, Brady through a six yard touchdown to his receiver, Amendola, within six
minutes in the fourth quarter. They had to go for two-point conversion and they succeeded, making it a eight point lead 28-20 Atlanta
lead.

The Patriots defense made a stop on the next drive to force Atlanta to punt to make one last drive. With less than two minutes, they
had to hustle. So Brady had to go deep and hope someone would catch it. He went to his main man, Julian Edelman, and between three
Falcon defenders. He caught it of off a ridiculous effort to stay alive in the game. Atlanta fans were in shock and believed he dropped it.
However, it was a completion.

got better. That same year, they sold the product to Stokely-Van Camp, owner of PepsiCo, and
they began to make commercials In the years 1984 to 1997.

tinued, the product started to take new ways of stopping the thirst, with gummies and sports
bars.

Gatorades opposite, Powerade, was created to compete against Gatorade in 1988. The product
is currently owned by The Coca-Cola Company. Powerade later became the official sport drink of
Australia, New Zealand, the Ireland Rugby Team, AFL, PGA Tour, NASCAR, NHRA, NCAA, and the
