Time: 3 hours Max. Marks: 80
Answer any FIVE questions
All questions carry equal marks

1 An earthen embankment is 7 m high above GL and is surcharged at an angle of 5 degree to the horizontal.
Determine the overall dimensions of a suitable counter-fort retaining wall and design in detail the toe, heel and
stem slabs. Take the following data for design:
Coefficient of sliding friction = 0.55
2
Safe bearing capacity = 20 t/m
3
Soil density when dry = 1.6 t/m
Angle of repose = 30 degree
3
Soil density when saturated = 1.8 t/m
Angle of repose = 18 degrees
Factor of safety against sliding = 1.5
Factor of safety against overturning = 2.5.

2 Design a rectangular underground tank free at top and fixed at base. The plan dimensions of the tank are 10 m
4 m and the height is 4 m. The top of tank is flush with the ground which has level top. The earth around is
3
wet with unit weight of 1800 kg/m and angle of repose of 10 degree. Design and draw the rough sketch for
walls (dividing it into two zones of 2 m depth each) and the base slab.

3 A rectangular steel overhead tank has a capacity of 1,00,000 liters. The plates available in widths of 160 cm
and lengths of 7 m. The depth of water is 2.25 m. The staging consists of 4 columns suitably, which are placed
at height of (the staging up to the bottom of transverse beam) is 10.5 m. Design the tank and draw the
necessary views (rough sketch).

4 Design a square R.C.C bunker with hopper bottom to store broken coal, to meet the following data:
Capacity of bunker = 30 tones
Angle of repose of broken coal = 30 degree
2
The stored coal is to be surcharged at 30 degree; weight of coal is 800 kgf/m
Design of side walls and hopper bottom.

5 (a) Sketch the cross section of T-beam super structure and indicate the different components.
(b) Describe briefly how you could design each component.

6 A deck type plate girder of effective span 20 m is provided on the main line of a single line metre gauge track. It
is subjected to a dead load of 2.0 t/m and an equivalent uniformly distributed live load of 5.0 t/m, in addition to
its self weight. Design: (i) The central section and the connection of flange angles with flange plates. (ii) The
stiffeners.

7 A through type Warren girder of span 30 m is to be used as one of the two main girder of single track meter
gauge railway bridge. The cross-girders are connected to the nodes of the truss. The stringers are spaced at
1.6 m between the center lines and they are connected to cross-girder. The main girders are provided at a
spacing of 4.8 m between their centerlines. There are 6 panels of 5 m length and the web members are
inclined at 65 degree to horizontal. D.L. per girder = 1.5 t/m, E.U.D.L.L per girder = 4.5 t/m. All rivets/bolts of 22
mm nominal diameter. The fatigue factor K for design of web members may be taken as 0.7
Design: (i) The top chord. (ii) Bottom chord. (iii) The diagonal member of third panel from the left support.

8 (a) What are the factors affecting the ductility.

(b) State the ductility requirements for flextural members with neat sketch as per IS-13920.
