Good morning...my name is Malcolm. I would like to express my appreciation of your

research items. I am a mix of Saulteaux, Assiniboine, Cree, Scotch, and German. On the
Metis side I am of Favel ancestory (Basil Favel) and would certainly like to find out
more. Anyway, I have enjoyed reading your info ...smile emoticon

Brenda Menard

Good Morning Malcolm. We're close to the same ancestry's. My maternal lines are
Saulteaux / Cree / Swampy Cree, Scotch and German...I have Favell / Favel ancestry as
my maternal 5th gr grandmother was *TITAMEG who m. John H. FAVELL [ an
Englishman ]. Two of their daughter's married into my Scottish family lineage: *Mary
FAVELL m. John MCKAY and *Native Woman aka Jane CREE aka Jane FAVELL
m.John BALLENDINE. My Paternal ancestry is Cree/ Chippewa/ Anishinaabe/ Abenaki,
French and English. Quite the mix. I have only a few Favel / Favell names in my Family
Tree data base...Basil is not there...but rings a bell. Would you happen to know who his
parents were.... Very nice to meet you...i'm out the door for the day. You have a great day.

Hi Malcolm. I've done a bit of looking about and Basil Favel has been a difficult find.
Near to nothing so far...only this: Favel, Basil - a Mtis of Poundmaker's Band. Might he
be your ancestor?http://www.scribd.com/doc/117023489/li-Exovede-Metis-Names-

Hi again Malcolm. It appears [ ? ] that Basil FAVEL was a Metis who received Treaty and
obtained First Nations Status...which is why he may be difficult to locate on line as treaty
and status records are generally not open on line. They must be requested in writing.

Malcolm Andrews

Good evening! Yes, this is him. My grandfather Adam Tootoosis' mother was/is Marie
Therese Favel of whom is the daughter of Basil Favel.

I've not been able to locate his parents...

I am aware of a grandmother named Sarah Trout of whom was taken as wife to an

Sarah TROUT was my 4th gr grand aunt..she was married to *Thomas FAVELL a son of
John H. FAVELL [ englishman ] and *TITAMEG my 5th great grandmother..

4/30, 9:38pm

Brenda Menard

Tittameg is believed to be translated as 'White Fish' is Cree.

Titameg was born about 1750 in Rupertsland and married John Favell, Jr according to the
custom of the day. She was called his 'Country Wife.,". John was born before 1740 in
Southwark, England. And like many of the Hudson Bay Company's male employees John
started a new family Rupert's Land. Based on the location of the Trading Post we might
guess that Titameg was Cree, perhaps the daughter of the Chief as the practice of Traders
forming relationships with local people through custom marriage was common in those
days.Another variation of her name is Tittameg meaning whitefish in English.

When John Favell died November 2, 1784 at Henley House, Rupertsland, he was in his
20th year of service with HCB. During this time his positions included Writer, Second
Accountant, Second in Command, Master and finally Deputy. He left a will concerned
with proper future provisions for his Indian wife Titameg and their children, Jane,
Humphrey Martin, Mary and Thomas. It is from Thomas's marriage to another Cree
Indian, Sally Trout, that I decend. [Written by couisn Serena Willis]

maybe you understand some of that belief

It is through my mother, Margaret Tootoosis, that I am linked to the Favel family

If you don't mind, I will send you pics of my research efforts.... ok?

Thank you Malcolm..you have been very kind. I'm happy to have met you as well. It's
been thousands of hours of searching & typing the past 15 years of doing research . But I
find it important not to let this to fade into history. Blessings to you and yours.

5/4, 9:52pm

Malcolm Andrews

Hy hy, you are a blessing to me and my family.

well... 'our' family ties... I shared some already with our relatives

Say... is Andrea Menard a close relative?

5/4, 11:33pm

Brenda Menard

Andrea Menard is a cousin twice...on my paternal side...she is my 3rd and my 4th cousin.
I've not been able to do her maternal lineage as yet....

Oh ok, thank you

Malcolm Andrews

Would it be ok for me to send people your way if they have jnquiries?

5/6, 9:40pm

Brenda Menard

Ok...sure...i'll do the best i can...

5/6, 9:41pm
Malcolm Andrews

Do you go to communities and teach families how to research and access their family
ties?

And what do ask for ?

5/6, 9:47pm

Brenda Menard

I don't do that Malcolm as i'm self taught. I had wonderful mentor's many years ago who
helped me....So i just 'pay-it-forward so to speak...i dont charge to help my relations as
there is no guarantee that we'll find what is needed.....sometimes we run into 'brick walls'
as i call it ...no documents...no proof other then family stories... sometimes those stories
are enough for our selves...but many institutions etc etc..even other other people want
documents.....i just help as i can....

5/6, 9:50pm

Malcolm Andrews

Oh my... what a wonderful person you are to do that, and yes, there are dead ends
sometime

I am interested to find kookums...it seems they get lost in shuffles sling the way.

5/6, 9:51pm

Brenda Menard

Often folk have to pay for their own documents and those of their parents and
grandparents...just that can sometimes run between 100 to 200 dollars depending on the
province...
for you...you would need your parents " LONG " form birth certificates...then the "
LONG " form b/certifivated of their parents...then may have to find church / baptism
records etc etc...

** b/ certificates **

thats just an example of what a person needs to begin..

5/6, 9:55pm

Malcolm Andrews

Yes... I would like to access the treaty payment lists and have had some results of the
reaidetial school records

5/6, 9:57pm

Brenda Menard

a limited amount of those records are available online....very few of them...for that, a
person needs to go the Band Admin and request the enrollment scrolls

5/6, 9:59pm

Malcolm Andrews

Oh ok yes

5/6, 10:00pm

Brenda Menard

Then you hope the records....especially the older ones are accurate....
Often the Indian agents did them...the older ones...and many are written wrong..

but if a person is diligent...can often figure them out..

5/6, 10:06pm

Malcolm Andrews

Yes... of my grandpa (Adam Tootoosis) that is true... his biological father is George
Atimoyoo but himself and Kookum Constance Paskemin, both siblings of GA, they are
registered with John Tootoosis Sr as he took them as his own when he took Marie
Therese Favel as his wife.

5/6, 10:07pm

Brenda Menard

i saw one way that Tootoosis had been written ans it was " Toshis "...

My son is here for a late dins....will catch up with soon...have a good evening...Blessings.

I traveled out to Brandon Manitoba when i was 17/18...I was with a small group of
people from the A.I.M. House in Vancouver. It was such a long time ago ..i can't
remember who all i met or traveled with. We traveled by bus. Thou i was with Winona,
'Noni', Wheeler when i got to Brandon. I went and stayed with the 'Pierre' Family from
Roseau River Rez in Winnipeg..I was socializing with people such as Lyle Ironstand, Les
Howse, Victor PIerre and Terrance 'Terry' Nelson. We did travel around a bit. I can not
remember if I met Ernest in Vancouver before i left the A.I.M. House or if i met him
along the way in Winnipeg. From there i moved down to Roseau River rez, for about a
year before i came back West to the Coast. I do vividly remember sitting and talking with
him...he was tall/slender, long braids..cowboy hat and a wonderful Human Being.

5/25, 11:43am

5/25, 11:56am

I had wonderful loving Mother...but i dont really remember my father..Mom left him by
the time i was 2 years of age because of his drinking...and then he died by the time i was

He did on a park bench in Pigeon Square, vancouver...
