A Call to Action for Animal Rights

My fellow students-

Animal abuse is becoming an epidemic in the United States. In 2006 alone

there were 2,333 reported cases, a 15% increase from 2005. "Why?" you ask?

The answer is obvious "the laws governing animal abuse are too lax".

Two years ago my family adopted a dog from a family friend. Her name is

Diva and she was two years old. Before us she had live in two different homes.

She was a victim of abuse. She had been kicked, locked in a cage, and neglected.

As a result she suffers from separation anxiety, violent tendencies, and a fear of

men. She suffered at the hands of a man who didn't love her; a man who was

never punished for his heinous crimes. Imagine if a person had to suffer this kind

of abuse. What would the penalty be for the abuser?

The laws protecting these defenseless creatures needs not only to be

enforced, they need to be stricter. We can not allow abuse of animals to continue.

We can not condone the suffering of any animal. We can not permit inhumanity of

any kind. We can not let animal abuse become the norm in the United States.

We keep with us the idea that the human race is no longer savage, but I

disagree. I tend to agree with Thomas Edison's view of humanity as civilized

beings. "Non-violence leads to the highest ethics, which is the goal of all
evolution. Until we stop harming all other living beings, we are still savages." For

the human race to become a moral civilization the abuse of other living beings has

to cease.

How many more millions of animals must become the victims of mutilation,

abuse, testing, or death at the hands of an abusive owner before the human race

realizes that what we are doing is morally and civilly wrong? All animal cruelty

must come to an end.

The question is not "should we stop animal abuse?"; the question is "how do

we stop animal abuse?". Stricter punishments need to be implemented. Prison

terms need to be extended. Companies who condone animal testing need to be

shut down. The consumption of products tested on animals needs to stop. Only

then will companies feel the pain that these vulnerable animals must go through.

But still the pain will not be great enough on the companies.

The time is now. The place is here. Our generation must be the generation

to call out the companies and the individuals who condone and participate in animal

abuse and testing. I implore you, my peers, take a stand on behalf of all

creatures. Be intolerant to abusive behavior in any form and report it when you

see it. Raise your level of compassion to include all animals. Animal abuse is a

heinous crime that has to be stopped.
